IMPLEMENTATIONPLAN

AREAOFFOCUS
IhavebeenatLaMiradaHighSchoolfornineyearsnow.BesidesthehighschoolIattended,
BreaOlindaHighSchool,itisaplaceIhavespentagoodpartofmylife.Imetmyhusband
whileworkingatLaMirada,webothcoachvarsitysportsinthespring(baseballandswimming)
andourtwochildrenspendalotoftimedoingthingswithusfortheschool.IntheyearsthatI
havebeenthere,wearenowmovingontoourthirdPrincipalandwehavecountlessother
administratorscomeandgo.Ithinkthroughtheturnover,ourschoolsimagehassuffered
tremendously.In2009,ourdistrictwasgivenProgramImprovementstatusbecauseofan
inabilityforthedistrictsstateSTARtestscorestoimproveenough.Ourschoolmettheyearly
improvementgoalsbutthedistrictdidnot.Duetothis,Ithinkbudgetedmoneywasspenttrying
toimproveotherthingsattheschoolbutnotnecessarilytheinfrastructureandwhatthe
appearanceoftheschoollookslike.Thewaysfortheschoolclimatetoimproveforallstudents
attendingtheschoolaswellasallemployeeswouldnottakemuchtobeastepintheright
direction.
SPECIFICGOALSTOACHIEVEAREAOFFOCUS

Withthefocusbeingoninfrastructure,amajorareathatneedsworkiscompletingthe

gymnasium.Currently,theseatsareonlyononesideofthegymsoforbasketballgames,with
thehandicappedentranceonthefarsidethatisnotacommonentranceforthoseviewinggames
orusingthebuilding.ItisimportantforamorecompleteentrancetocomplywiththeAmericans
withDisabilitiesAct.Thisisimportantforthelivesofthousandsofstudentsovertheyearsthat
wouldbeaffected.(Burgdorf,2015)Whentheschoolwasfirstbuiltin1960,thegymnasiumwas
builtwithbleachersononesideofthebuildingandtheoppositesidehadatemporarywall

installed.In2015,theBoysVarsityBasketballteamwontheCaliforniaStateFinalsin
Berkeley.AcompletedgymwouldhighlightthisprogramandalsohelpgrowtheGirls
Basketballteam.Anotheradditionwouldbetoaddairconditioningtothebuilding.Itcurrently
doesnothaveanA/Corheatingandduringmostgamesthetemperaturesreachover90degrees
andsomepatronshavepassedoutduetotheheat.Inadditiontothegymnasium,thatwould
allowformoreclassesandstudentstousethebuilding,moreroomintheareawouldallowmore
teamsandsportstopracticethereaswellasallowthecommunitytohaveanopportunitytouse
thefield.Inadditiontothegym,anoverallremodelandrefacingneedstooccurtoimprovethe
schoolappearance.Manyofthebuildingsareoutdated,inefficientandunappealingtotryingto
drawinnewstudentstoenroll.Thiswouldhavethepotentialtohavealargeimpactonthe
schoolcultureandincreasingenrollmentnumbers(SchoolClimateMatters).Thepositiveimpact
onstudentsandstaffwouldhelpbenefiteveryone.Withmanyschoolsfacingdeclining
enrollment,havinganythingtodrawstudentstotheschoolbecomesabeneficialfactor.Another
majorimprovementthatneedstooccurincludesupdatingthehardwareandtechnologythatthe
schooluses.Mostcomputersonthecampusareoverfiveyearsoldandthereareonly2cartsofa
totalof80ipads.Havingmoreaccesstomoretechnologywouldgreatlyimprovetheschools
climate.
TIMELINEFORIMPLEMENTATIONANDACHIEVEMENT
Theamountoftimeitwouldtaketoachievethenecessarygoalswouldbe23years.There
wouldhavetobetemporarybuildingsavailablewhiletheremodelingwascompleted.The
purchasingofnewertechnologycouldbecompletedovera3yearspan.Afterbidswereplaced,
contractorsandcompanieswouldbechosentogetthebestqualityworkforthebestprice.

ACTIONTOACHIEVEGOALS
Thelargestactioninvolvedforachievingthegoalswouldbefromthebudget.Moremoney
wouldneedtobeallottedtoupdatethegymnasium,allotherbuildingsandpayforthenew
technology.Also,campusbeautificationwithplantingoftrees,shrubsandflowerswouldhelp
maketheschoollookmuchmoreappealing.(Alldroughtfriendlyplantsbecausetheschoolis
locatedinLosAngelesCountyinSouthernCalifornia.)Again,contractorswouldneedtobe
chosentocompletetheworktoachievethisgoal.
METHODFORMEASURINGACHIEVEMENTOFGOALS
Oncetheworkwascompleted,thebestwaytomeasurementifthegoalsweremetwouldbeif
enrollmentincreased.Thiswouldbethesurefirewaytodetermineifthemoneyandtimespent
wasactuallyworthittoimprovetheschool.
