HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 1.

TEASER
FADE IN:
TIGHT - ANNETTE DAVIES
Sleeps, her forehead dotted with sweat. 37, and looks it. A
pale, weathered face makes her dark hair appear darker than
it actually is.
Sounds of rhythmic clapping and singing come from the
background. Then a hand reaches into frame and nudges
Annettes shoulder.
She starts awake.
Huh?
Annette?

ANNETTE
CHURCH MEMBER 1

PULL OUT to REVEAL were:

INT. CHURCH - BACK ROOM -- DAY
A WOMAN crouches next to the faded couch Annette has been
napping on, nestled behind piles of old hymnals and long-lost
flannelgraphs.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
Its almost time for you to speak.
ANNETTE
(smiles sheepishly)
Must be jet lagged, I guess.
She sits up and becomes woozy.
Whoah.

ANNETTE (CONT'D)

The woman reaches for her.

You okay?

CHURCH MEMBER 1

ANNETTE
Just sat up too fast.
The singing in the background stops, and the woman looks out
the door.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 2.

Show time.

CHURCH MEMBER 1

INT. CHURCH - SANCTUARY -- DAY

Annette stands at the podium in front of a packed, but small,
CONGREGATION. Behind her is a screen, showing a slide of
Annette standing in front of a hut with several CONGOLESE
VILLAGERS.
ANNETTE
While I am in the Democratic
Republic of Congo, I spend the
majority of my time in a small
village called Lhoja.
Annette wipes some sweat from her brow, then presses a button
on a remote shes holding.
The slide behind her changes to show a small mission
building, with a Madonna statue standing in front of it.
ANNETTE (CONT'D)
(fights wave of nausea)
My job there is to help the doctors
at Peres Passionistes in their work
with the villagers who are sick,
especially with Monkeypox.
Very pale now, Annette takes a moment to steady herself
against the podium. She presses the button on the remote
again.
The slide changes to show her sitting behind a desk, forcing
a smile for the camera.
ANNETTE (CONT'D)
My job is mainly administrative but is still very important(begins to heave)
-Im sorryShe runs to the side of the stage, but theres no time to
leave. She falls to her knees and vomits onto the floor, to
the shocked gasps of the congregation.

ACT ONE
FADE IN:
INT. CLINIC - RECEPTION AREA -- DAY
HOUSE exits one of the exam rooms behind a PATIENT, only to
run into LUCAS exiting Cuddys office with RACHEL (Cuddys
baby).
House pretends to ignore Lucas, dropping his chart off at the
Nurses Desk in an especially noisy way.
The NURSE gives him a wry look.
HOUSE
Sorry. Guess I need more work on my
burgling skills.
LUCAS
Right. Because the cane wouldnt
hold you back at all.
House turns to him.
HOUSE
It never has before, has it?
(he nods at Rachel)
Whats with the mini-Cuddy?
LUCAS
Lisa just had an emergency with her
baby-sitter. Im filling in.
Theres nothing more either of them wants to say.
HOUSE
Isnt that nice. Have fun.
He turns to leave. Lucas pats his pockets.
LUCAS
(knows hell regret this
later)
Uh, House? You got ten bucks?
House stops, raising an eyebrow.
LUCAS (CONT'D)
I need to pay for parking but left
my wallet at home. I dont want to
bother Lisa again. Ill pay you
back later...

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 4.

House smiles.
INT. E.R. WAITING ROOM - DAY
House sits next to Wilson, whos reading a chart.
WILSON
You could have at least lent him
your money instead of mine.
HOUSE
You know I never carry cash.
Wilson gives him a look.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
Okay - except when Im going to a
strip joint. And Im not going
tonight. Or ever again. Ive
reformed, Doctor!
WILSON
You amaze me. I dont even know
what to say.
HOUSE
Dont say anything. Words are
overrated.
He nods at several CHURCH MEMBERS sitting across from them
(one of them recognizable from the first scene). Theyre
trying not to stare at him, aghast.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
Its more for their benefit anyway.
I love confusing their little
brains - right now, they dont know
whether to curse me or pray for my
eternal salvation. Maybe I can get
them to do both.
WILSON
You are despicable.
House shrugs. Just then, a DOCTOR emerges from the E.R. to
talk to the Church Members. House eavesdrops.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
Is Annette alright, doctor?
DOCTOR
Your friend seems to have gotten
Cholera during her travels. Im
admitting her for the night.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 5.

CHURCH MEMBER 2
Is that serious?
DOCTOR
She should be fine in time for her
return trip to the DRC next week.
House perks up and grabs his cane. Wilson gives him a look.
WILSON
House. Dont.
HOUSE
Dont say anything. Words are
overrated, remember?
Off Wilsons look:
INT. HOUSES OFFICE - OUTER OFFICE -- DAY
House and the team -- CHASE, FOREMAN, TAUB, and THIRTEEN.
House throws a chart onto the table for them to look over.
HOUSE
Female. 37 years old. Presents with
fatigue, sweats, nausea, and
vomiting.
He moves to the white board, writing fatigue, sweats and
nausea. Then he carefully draws a picture of a stick figure
puking.
Thirteen glances at the chart.
THIRTEEN
Shes already been diagnosed. With
Cholera.
HOUSE
(ignores her)
All symptoms of Malaria.
TAUB
In New Jersey?
HOUSE
Shes recently returned from the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
He draws a rough map of Africa.
THIRTEEN
Shes been diagnosed with Cholera.
It fits.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 6.

HOUSE
(still ignoring her)
Whats interesting is that she was
on Malaria pills.
Thirteen looks to Foreman for help.
FOREMAN
Which explains why its NOT
Malaria. Its Cholera.
House turns to him.
HOUSE
Exactly. Its NOT Malaria. OR
Cholera.
What?

TAUB

House just looks at Chase, who hasnt said anything. He waits

for him to speak.
CHASE
This is too easy. Why are you even
interested?
TAUB
(grasping for straws)
Theres been a recent outbreak of
Yellow Fever in the DRC.
The rest of the team looks up at House, who just keeps
looking at Chase.
HOUSE
Chase and Thirteen - take a more
detailed history. Foreman and Taub,
test for Yellow Fever.
INT. ANNETTES HOSPITAL ROOM -- DAY
Annette lies in bed, hooked up to an IV. Shes even paler
than she was before, and sweaty.
Chase and Thirteen enter, and she smiles weakly.
THIRTEEN
Ms. Davies-Annette.

ANNETTE

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 7.

THIRTEEN
Annette, Im Doctor Hadley, and
this is Doctor Chase. Were just
here to ask you a few questions
about what happened before you got
sick.
ANNETTE
You need a history.
CHASE
(slightly impressed)
Youre a doctor?
ANNETTE
I work with them. In the DRC. We
mostly help the Lhoja villagers who
have Monkeypox.
(off Thirteens look)
Ive been vaccinated.
CHASE
Youre there with a medical group?
ANNETTE
More like a mission.
Thirteen glances at Chase.
THIRTEEN
(to Annette)
Youre a missionary?
ANNETTE
For four-and-a-half years now. This
is my first sabbatical.
Off of Chases impassive look:
INT. HOUSES OFFICE - INNER OFFICE -- DAY
House is online, looking at bank records. He actually
chuckles with glee.
Chase bursts in.
CHASE
What do you think youre doing?
HOUSE
Looking at Lucas bank records. Did
you know he has a subscription to
Urban Climber magazine? I think I
respect him more for that.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 8.

HOUSE (CONT'D)
(thinks a moment)
No. Actually, I dont.
CHASE
I meant about Annette Davies!
HOUSE
What about her?
CHASE
You knew she was a missionary!
HOUSE
So what? Missionaries need medical
help, too, Doctor Chase. Even if
they are extremely misguided souls.
CHASE
Youre doing this to torment me. Or
her. Or both of us.
HOUSE
Really? It torments you?
CHASE
Theres no real medical reason for
your taking this case. Its far too
straightforward for your taste.
HOUSE
Youre sure about that.
CHASE
Do you want me to hit you again?
For real this time?
House looks at him for a moment.
HOUSE
Is it really me you want to hit
right now? Or is it actually the
Big Man Upstairs?
What?

CHASE

HOUSE
Tormenting her is just fun - she
asked for it by being so stupid.
Your torment is just an unintended
side effect caused by your
restraint.
Chase still isnt getting it.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 9.

HOUSE (CONT'D)
(sighs)
I thought you might want a few jabs
at God yourself, considering
everything thats been going on
lately.
Chase shakes his head, unsure hes hearing correctly.
CHASE
Youre saying you took this case as
a FAVOR to me?
HOUSE
Think about it. Torturing someone
else can be cathartic. Especially
when they represent everything you
have a problem with.
Huh.

CHASE

He turns to leave. Then:

CHASE (CONT'D)
Wait - did you say youre looking
at Lucas bank records?
Off of Houses amused reaction:
INT. LAB -- DAY
Foreman and Taub await the results of their tests.
FOREMAN
This is ridiculous. The woman has
Cholera.
TAUB
(shrugs)
House never disappoints.
They sit in silence for a moment, waiting.
TAUB (CONT'D)
Did you hear Wilson bought the
condo Cuddy wanted? I heard she was
going to move in with Lucas. And I
dont think she knows yet that
Wilson was the one to get it.
Foreman just looks at him, not one for gossip. Then something
on Taubs collar catches his eye and he takes a closer look.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 10.

FOREMAN
Is that lipstick?
Taub shrugs him off.
FOREMAN (CONT'D)
Look, I dont care one way or the
other, but does this mean youre
cheating on your wife again?
TAUB
If you dont care, then why are you
asking?
Foreman gives him a look as if Taubs non-answer answered
everything. Taub doesnt flinch.
A timer goes off. Taub checks the results.
TAUB (CONT'D)
The test is negative. Annette
Davies does not have Yellow Fever.
We should tell House.
He gathers his papers and leaves. Foreman follows him.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS -- DAY
Foreman emerges from the lab to see Taub disappearing around
the corner.
Taub!

FOREMAN

But its too late. Hes gone.

Foreman turns to discover the group of Church Members talking
to a NURSE.
CHURCH MEMBER 2
Is this the way to Annette Davies
room?
CHURCH MEMBER 1
Why was she moved?
The Nurse doesnt know what to say. Foreman approaches the
group.
FOREMAN
I can help you.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 11.

INT. ANNETTES HOSPITAL ROOM -- DAY
Annettes really pale now, and her hair is wet from her
sweat. Although shes under several layers of blankets, she
shivers profusely.
Foreman enters with the Church Members.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
Annette? Whats going on? How come
youve changed rooms?
One of the other Church Members motions for the first woman
to calm down.
CHURCH MEMBER 3
Shh... Margaret, dont worry her.
Were here to cheer her up,
remember?
Foreman looks at Annette, concerned.
FOREMAN
Ms. Davies? Are you alright?
ANNETTE
(through chattering teeth)
C-c-cold.
Foreman feels her forehead.
FOREMAN
Youre burning up - you have a
fever.
(shouting out the door)
I need some paracetamol in here!
He tries to remove her covers, but Annettes eyes widen and
she clings to them desperately.
One of the Church Members steps forward.
CHURCH MEMBER 2
Dont worry, Annette, God will heal
you in time for you to go back and
do His work in Lhoja.
ANNETTE
(desperate)
P-p-please! Everyone - just go!
But-

CHURCH MEMBER 1

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 12.

Annette glares at her.
G-g-go!

ANNETTE

Offended, the Church Members gather their things and leave.

Foreman watches this exchange with interest.
After theyre gone, Foreman gently unclenches Annettes hands
from her covers.
FOREMAN
We need to take off your covers so
you can cool from your fever.
ANNETTE
I just didnt want them to see...
Foreman pulls back the covers to reveal that Annettes sheets
are now covered with feces.
Foremans face tells us how bad it smells.
FADE OUT:
END OF ACT ONE

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 13.

ACT TWO
FADE IN:
CLOSE ON - THE WHITE BOARD
House uses a brown marker to carefully draws a steaming pile
next to the stick figure he drew earlier (the one that was
vomiting).
PULL BACK TO REVEAL:
INT. HOUSES OFFICE - OUTER OFFICE -- DAY
The team is not amused.
House finishes his drawing.
HOUSE
We have a new symptom.
THIRTEEN
Its still Cholera.
HOUSE
(ignoring her)
We now know its not Malaria. Which
proves I was right. About it not
being Malaria.
THIRTEEN
Yes - because ITS CHOLERA.
House finally turns to her.
HOUSE
I dont have to have four fellows,
you know. I did just fine with
three in the past.
(off her shocked
expression)
Humor me. What else presents with
these symptoms?
TAUB
Dengue Fever.
HOUSE
Didnt have any mosquito bites.
(turns to Thirteen)
Which is how I knew it wasnt
Malaria, by the way.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 14.

CHASE
Aseptic Meningitis.
HOUSE
Shes not stiff. Yet.
FOREMAN
Legionnaires.
HOUSE
I hope not - thats too boring.
H1N1.

TAUB

House stops short.

HOUSE
Plain old Swine Flu?
TAUB
(shrugs)
It fits.
House doesnt want to admit hes right, even though he knows
it. So he doesnt say anything.
Thirteen glares at him.
THIRTEEN
Lactose intolerance.
HOUSE
Now youre just being cruel.
(turns to the team)
So which is it?
FOREMAN
(shrugs)
Cholera.
(off Houses look)
OR H1N1.
THIRTEEN
This is ridiculous. Why are we
wasting our time?
HOUSE
Because its not any of these
things - but we have to narrow them
out.
(after a moment of
thought)

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 15.

HOUSE (CONT'D)
Treat for H1N1, but test for
Aseptic Meningitis and
Legionnaires.
(glares at Thirteen)
Well just pretend the lactose
intolerance was never mentioned.
The team leaves to do his bidding.
INT. ANNETTES HOSPITAL ROOM -- DAY
Thirteen hooks Annette up to an IV. Annette looks at Foreman
with disbelief.
ANNETTE
You think I have H1N1?
FOREMAN
You have all the symptoms.
ANNETTE
But I dont know anyone who has it.
And I just got back a few days ago,
so how could I have gotten it
already?
Thirteen glances at Foreman; Annette has a point. But Foreman
is firm.
FOREMAN
You should start feeling better in
a few hours.
INT. WILSONS OFFICE -- DAY
Wilson sits at his desk doing paperwork. House comes in
without knocking.
HOUSE
Its my duty to help a friend in
need, isnt it?
Wilson doesnt look up.
WILSON
What are you plotting, House?
HOUSE
If you were, say, dating someone
that I knew, hypothetically, had an
empty bank account and was thus
only using you for your money, I
should tell you. Right?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 16.

Wilson puts down his pen, knowing hes about to enter a world
of pain.
WILSON
Fine. Ill take the bait. Yes, you
should. But all this is moot
because Im single right now.
House just looks at him, waiting for him to connect the dots.
WILSON (CONT'D)
(Im an idiot)
...But Cuddy isnt.
HOUSE
Lucas is a mooch.
WILSON
YOURE a mooch.
HOUSE
Yes, but Lucas is a kept man. He
lives off of Cuddy.
WILSON
You live off of ME. I should just
start calling you Joe.
House isnt really listening.
HOUSE
Thats it - Lucas is a mooch like
me. Cuddys just using Lucas as a
safer substitute for me.
WILSON
Constantly forcing the world to
revolve around you must get really
exhausting.
HOUSE
Thats why I work out.
He turns to leave.
WILSON
Hows your patient doing?
HOUSE
Not interesting yet.
(something occurs to him)
What did you mean you should start
calling me Joe?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 17.

WILSON
As in Gillis?
Only a blank look.
WILSON (CONT'D)
(sighs)
Sunset Boulevard.
HOUSE
You know that would make you the
crazy reclusive actress whos past
her prime, dont you?
WILSON
Just forget it. It was a weak
comparison.
HOUSE
(smirks)
Actually, I think it was a pretty
good example of self-analysis.
Wilson turns back to his work.
WILSON
If thats the case, then you die in
the end, remember?
No comment. He looks up, but House is gone.
INT. LAB -- DAY
Taub and Thirteen are running tests.
TAUB
Testing for Cholera even though
House is determined that isnt what
it is?
Thirteen shrugs a so what?
Ballsy.

TAUB (CONT'D)

THIRTEEN
I just think House is ignoring the
straightforward answer. Occams
Razor, right?
Taub looks at her.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 18.

TAUB
So Occams Razor is why Foremans
siding with you against House on
this? Or have you two reconciled?
THIRTEEN
No. That chapter of my life is
definitely over.
Suddenly, Taubs cell phone rings. He smiles when he sees
whos calling and answers it.
TAUB
Hi. Im a little busy right now.
(beat)
I know. Im still coming. Can you
wait another half hour?
He glances at Thirteen, whos trying not to look like shes
listening. He turns away.
TAUB (CONT'D)
Ill be there. I promise. I can
barely wait to see you, too.
(quieter)
Everythings fine with House. There
are no hard feelings.
(beat)
So theres ONE hard feeling, but
thats different.
Thirteen perks up.
TAUB (CONT'D)
No - his eyes fine now. I have to
go.
He hangs up and turns around to find Thirteen with a raised
eyebrow.
THIRTEEN
Who was that and why does Houses
eye have anything to do with you?
Taub hesitates.
THIRTEEN (CONT'D)
Are you cheating on your wife
again?
Busted. Taub sighs.
TAUB
Actually, no, Im not.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 19.

THIRTEEN
Then who was that?
My wife.

TAUB

THIRTEEN
(yeah right)
Your wife just made a booty call on
you? But what does that have to do
with Houses eye?
Taub looks away. Thirteen puts two and two together.
THIRTEEN (CONT'D)
She thinks YOU punched House?! You
sly dog, you!
TAUB
Apparently violent displays of
testosterone turn her on. She cant
get enough of me.
Just then, the timer goes off; the lab tests are done.
Taub looks at his test result.
TAUB (CONT'D)
Well, it appears as if Annette does
not have the H1N1 virus.
Thirteen smiles triumphantly and looks at her test - which
makes her smile disappear.
THIRTEEN
And she doesnt have Cholera
either.
INT. CLINIC - RECEPTION AREA -- DAY
House leans against the counter, watching the door as
patients enter. One particularly pretty but PALE YOUNG WOMAN
(20s) comes in. House approaches her with a gleam in his
eye.
Hi.
Hi.

HOUSE
PALE YOUNG WOMAN

HOUSE
Im Doctor Gregory House. Can I ask
what youre here for?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 20.

CUDDYS hand clamps down on his shoulder.
CUDDY
Unless youre suddenly interested
in pre-natal care, Id suggest you
leave Ms. Morgan alone.
House looks to the Pale Young Woman.
PALE YOUNG WOMAN
Im just here to get some vitamins.
HOUSE
And youre so pale because...?
PALE YOUNG WOMAN
Morning sickness. Im nauseous.
Ah.

HOUSE

He motions for the Pale Young Woman to take a seat in the

waiting area and she complies.
CUDDY
You already have a case.
HOUSE
Its boring.
CUDDY
Not anymore.
She hands him a set of papers.
CUDDY (CONT'D)
Annette Davies tested negative for
both H1N1 and Cholera.
House brightens and turns as if to leave.
HOUSE
Oh - hows your house-hunting
going?
CUDDY
Nothing yet. I had a great place,
but SOMEONE swooped in and snatched
it up.
She gives him a look of death. House holds up his hands in
self-defense.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 21.

HOUSE
Dont blame me. It was all Wilsons
idea.
He starts to walk away.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
But well be sure to invite you to
the housewarming.
Cuddy takes a deep breath of frustration and walks back into
her office.
INT. HOUSES OFFICE - OUTER OFFICE -- DAY
House and his team sit around the table. Foreman, Thirteen,
and Taub are definitely more interested now. Chase shows a
grudging interest.
What now?
Dysentery.
Typhoid.

HOUSE
FOREMAN
THIRTEEN

House turns to Taub, who is about to say something as his

phone vibrates. He quickly shuts it off.
TAUB
Uh - gastroenteritis.
HOUSE
You going to answer that?
Later.

TAUB

HOUSE
Im so glad you have your
priorities straight.
He looks at Chase.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
We havent heard from you yet.
CHASE
None of the above.
FOREMAN
Nice, Chase. Youre not helping.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 22.

CHASE
(shrugs)
Maybe the woman is simply being
tested by God and is coming up
short.
Stunned silence.
HOUSE
Shes a lesser Job?
Chase just shrugs again.
CHASE
Or shes in sin and being punished
for it. Why dont we ask her?
Patients lie, right?
House turns to the rest of the team.
HOUSE
Well, not that Ive ever cared
before, but Im pretty sure our
insurance company would not
literally buy Act of God as Ms.
Davies cause of death. So lets do
some more tests.
They all leave, avoiding Chases eye.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY -- DAY
Foreman hangs back and falls in step with Chase.
FOREMAN
Hey man - did you actually mean
that stuff?
Chase looks him in the eye.
CHASE
What reason would I have to say
anything I didnt mean?
For once in his life, Foreman has no response. He looks away
uncomfortably and picks up his pace, so Chase is left to walk
alone.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANNETTES ROOM -- DAY
Chase walks up to discover the group of Church Members, who
have been forced to wait outside while the Team does tests on
Annette.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 23.

He turns quietly to walk away, but they see him.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
Doctor Chase!

Yes?

CHASE
(turning back)

The Church Members gather around him.

CHURCH MEMBER 1
The other doctors already left, but
they wont let us in Annettes
room. Whats going on? How is she?
CHASE
Weve ruled out Cholera, Malaria,
and H1N1.
CHURCH MEMBER 2
Praise the Lord! Thats good news,
right?
CHURCH MEMBER 1
But what does she actually have?
She seems to be getting worse!
CHASE
My colleagues are performing more
tests as we speak. There are
several possibilities.
Church Member 3 puts his arm around Church Member 1.
CHURCH MEMBER 3
Now lets not pester the poor
doctor, Margaret. We should let him
do his job.
Church Member 1 nods and lets herself be led away. Church
Member 2 looks carefully at Chase.
CHURCH MEMBER 2
God bless you, Doctor Chase. You do
His work whenever you fight to save
a life. And may He grant you wisdom
to help Annette.
Chases eyes flash, but Church Member 2 doesnt notice. She
just turns and walks away to join the others.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 24.

INT. ANNETTES HOSPITAL ROOM -- DAY
Annette lies resting on the bed, still very pale and sweaty.
Chase comes in and checks her vitals. Annette opens her eyes
and smiles at him.
ANNETTE
So whats the prognosis, Doctor?
CHASE
We cant be sure until the tests
have finished.
She sighs and closes her eyes again. Chase moves as if to
leave, but then turns back.
CHASE (CONT'D)
Whyd you go to the Congo?
Annette opens her eyes with surprise. She thinks before she
answers.
ANNETTE
I thought it was what God wanted me
to do.
CHASE
You dont think that anymore?
Her eyes wander to the IV in her arm, and she shrugs
sheepishly. Chase turns again to leave.
ANNETTE
Whyd you become a doctor?
He stops and turns back.
CHASE
To make up for not doing what God
made me to do.
Annette looks at him, confused, but also somewhat
understanding.
ANNETTE
I hear you.
Suddenly, she gets very nauseated and grabs something to
vomit into.
Chases eyes widen with concern when Annette vomits - because
shes vomiting BLOOD.
FADE OUT:

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 25.

END OF ACT TWO

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 26.

ACT THREE
FADE IN:
INT. HOUSES OFFICE - OUTER OFFICE -- DAY
House stands in front of the Team.
HOUSE
So now we have vomiting blood to
add to our list of symptoms.
THIRTEEN
What? Arent you going to draw a
cute little picture of it?
House looks at her.
HOUSE
Gee, I had thought that would be
too insensitive. But okay - if you
ask.
He grabs a red marker and colors over his earlier drawing of
vomit. Thirteen rolls her eyes.
FOREMAN
This probably means she has
Dysentery. A really severe case.
THIRTEEN
Making my lactose intolerance
diagnosis not so ridiculous after
all.
House caps his marker and clasps his hands together with joy.
Oh goodie!
Goodie?

HOUSE
TAUB

HOUSE
Lets treat her for Dysentery - but
please let me be the one to tell
the patient.
INT. ANNETTES HOSPITAL ROOM -- DAY
The Church Members flutter around Annette, trying to make her
comfortable, but she actually looks sort of annoyed.
House, Taub, and Thirteen burst in.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 27.

HOUSE
Good afternoon. Im Doctor Gregory
House. You have Dysentery.
Dysentery?

ANNETTE

HOUSE
Yes. It comes from ingesting
something contaminated by infected
feces.
He turns to the Church Members.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
Thats poop, for all you laymen.
He turns back to Annette.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
Well begin treatment at once.
Annette struggles not to laugh, her eyes sparkling.
ANNETTE
Do you plan on using the Western
method of treatment - or would you
rather go with the more alternative
treatment?
House is thrown off by her amusement.
HOUSE
Do you know what the alternative
treatment involves?
She bursts into laughter. The Church Members are confused.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
What? Whats so funny?
Taub turns to them.
TAUB
Alternative treatment would involve
using either camel or sheep feces.
CHURCH MEMBER 2
Using them how?
ANNETTE
Id have to ingest them.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 28.

CHURCH MEMBER 1
Youd have to eat camel poop?
THIRTEEN
(almost whispering)
More like drink it.
The Church Members look disgusted. House grins - finally the
reaction he was waiting for.
Church Member 1 turns to House with narrowed eyes.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
Wait a minute - I know you! You
were that doctor in the waiting
roomHOUSE
-and now Im the doctor in your
friends room. Good for you. You
have excellent powers of
recognition.
Church Member 1 turns to Church Member 2.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
Hes the one who was talking about
going to the strip club, remember?
Annette smirks at House.
ANNETTE
Lighten up, Margaret - he was just
pulling your chain.
Church Member 1 looks offended.
CHURCH MEMBER 1
But do you really want a man like
thatANNETTE
-Please. I think its time for you
all to let me have a minute alone
with my doctors.
She smiles at each of the Church Members until they finally
concede and leave the room.
House turns to Annette.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 29.

HOUSE
Actually, I really do frequent
strip clubs. I also hire
prostitutes on occasion.
ANNETTE
I figured. But that doesnt make
you a bad doctor, does it?
House has no retort. This woman is a cipher to him.
He turns to Taub and Thirteen.
HOUSE
Congratulations. The two of you get
to test Ms. Davies feces for
Dysentery. Have at it.
And he leaves.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANNETTES ROOM -- DAY
House emerges, still slightly unsure about what just
happened, only to run into Cuddy on the rampage.
CUDDY
House. Explain.
She hands him a file.
HOUSE
Well, you see, these are those
things called file folders. We
have all sorts of uses for themCUDDY
-Cut the crap, House. Its a list
of your computers browsing history
for the past week.
HOUSE
(mock shock)
Youve been monitoring my internet
use?! Why I never!
(aside)
And I can totally justify the porn.
It had to do with a case.
Cuddy gives him a look.
CUDDY
You know what Im talking about.
What were you doing hacking into
Lucas bank account?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 30.

HOUSE
I was curious.
CUDDY
About what?
HOUSE
He doesnt seem to really be
working much anymore.
Cuddy shifts uncomfortably - its not lost on House.
CUDDY
My baby-sitter quit - hes been
helping me out.
HOUSE
I see. So hes not just a kept man hes a manny.
Cuddy stops and stares House down.
CUDDY
House, if youd ever been in a
grown-up relationship, youd know
that people who care about each
other sometimes sacrifice things to
help each other out.
HOUSE
I see. So hes not a lazy mooch at
all and my concern for you was
misguided.
She doesnt know how to react to this, so she just says:
Sure.

CUDDY

She turns and walks away. House smiles and pulls out his cell
phone.
INTERCUT WITH:
EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING -- DAY
Chase and Foreman creep around a corner, casing the joint.
Suddenly, Chases phone rings. He answers it.
Yes?

CHASE

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 31.

HOUSE
You in yet?
Chase rolls his eyes at Foreman.
CHASE
Not yet. We just got here.
HOUSE
Try the kitchen window. Its a
little loose.
CHASE
For some reason, Im not surprised
you know that.
House nears his office.
HOUSE
Right. Now remember, were looking
for anything that will prove that
hes not intending to go back to
work.
FOREMAN
Explain to me again why were doing
this totally illegal thing.
House smiles.
HOUSE
Put me on speakerphone.
Chase complies.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
Wow! These new phones have such
great reception! I could almost see
you smoldering as you said that,
Foreman.
(simply, as to a child)
Because you want to keep your job.
Comprende?
Foreman rolls his eyes.
Yes.

FOREMAN

House hangs up.

EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING -- DAY
Foreman looks at Chase.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 32.

FOREMAN
Explain to me again why were doing
this totally illegal thing.
Chase pries the kitchen window open and climbs in.
CHASE
You heard the man - because we want
to keep our jobs.
He moves further inside, away from the window.
Got it.

FOREMAN

Foreman climbs in after Chase.

INT. LUCAS APARTMENT - KITCHEN -- DAY
Reasonably tidy for a young bachelor. Chase is already
searching the cupboards. He pulls a Star Wars novelty glass
off the shelf and shows it to Foreman.
CHASE
I get that House is obsessed with
Lucas because hes with Cuddy, but
I honestly dont think he should be
threatened by him.
Foreman just nods and watches his back for a moment, then
moves toward the fridge.
FOREMAN
Hey man, do you ever go to church
anymore?
Chase stops what hes doing and turns around.
CHASE
Wow. That came out of nowhere.
FOREMAN
I was just wondering.
CHASE
What does that have to do with
House? Or Lucas?
Nothing.

FOREMAN

Chase turns back to the cupboard.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 33.

Exactly.

CHASE

FOREMAN
Its just - what ever happened that
made you drop out of seminary?
CHASE
Huh. You know weve worked together
for seven years now, and thats the
first time youve thought to ask
that question. I wonder what
brought it up?
FOREMAN
Look, I dont personally care one
way or the other what you believe but you obviously used to. And now
you pretend you dont. But then
theres this case, and its
obviously bothering you a lot...
CHASE
Just forget about it, okay? Its
not like youre the best person to
talk to about this anyway.
FOREMAN
(shrugs)
Youre right - but at least Im
someone to talk to.
Chase leaves the room.
Foreman opens the fridge, finding jars upon jars of homemade
baby food, all neatly packaged and labelled.
FOREMAN (CONT'D)
(to himself)
Whoah.
(to Chase)
Looks like Lucas has really
committed himself to his role as
childcare provider.
CHASE (O.S.)
Youre telling me.
Foreman walks into the next room.
INT. LUCAS APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM -- DAY
Filled with baby items: toys, jumpers, clothes - anything you
can imagine.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 34.

CHASE
Im surprised the guy isnt already
lactating.
INT. LAB -- DAY
Taub and Thirteen await the test results from Annettes
feces.
Taub gets a text, but doesnt check it. Thirteen gives him a
look.
THIRTEEN
Youre not going to check it? It
might be another booty call.
Taub shakes his head, no.
Thirteen shrugs. Shes not going to ask.
After a minute, Taub turns to her.
TAUB
Okay. So Im a little overwhelmed.
By what?
My wife.
Really?

THIRTEEN
TAUB
THIRTEEN

TAUB
Youve heard that women reach their
sexual peak at middle-age, right?
Thirteen just gives a little smile and nods.
TAUB (CONT'D)
Couple that with her thinking Im
some macho bad boy, and, well...
THIRTEEN
Little saddle sore there, Cowboy?
He shrugs.
TAUB
Its ridiculous, right? To complain
about having too much sex?
Thirteen looks at him.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 35.

THIRTEEN
You could tell her the truth.
TAUB
And go back to no sex at all? Uh,
let me think about that - no. Id
rather have too much sex and be a
bit sore and tired, than not have
any at all.
THIRTEEN
Suit yourself.
The timer goes off. Thirteen checks the result and her face
falls.
INT. HOUSES OFFICE - OUTER OFFICE -- DAY
House is intrigued.
HOUSE
So no to Dysentery then. What is it
instead?
His Team looks back at him with blank faces.
THIRTEEN
It could still be a whole host of
other things.
HOUSE
(smiles)
See, didnt I tell you not to
worry? That this would be an
interesting case after all?
Thirteen doesnt want to respond, but she cant help but
shrug.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
Now, since its interesting enough
for you, why dont you go do some
research and figure out what this
could be?
Taubs phone indicates that he got a text. House looks at him
with annoyance.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
You, too. In fact, everyone should
go. Theres got to be something
were missing.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 36.

The Team stands to leave, but House pulls Chase and Foreman
aside.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
(quietly)
Before you go, tell me what you
found.
INT. CUDDYS OFFICE -- DAY
Cuddy is doing paperwork. House enters without knocking.
HOUSE
You know, I was sort of joking
about the Lucas being a manny thing
- but now I know I was actually
right on the mark.
CUDDY
House, get out of my office.
HOUSE
You know youre emasculating him,
right? By having him quit working,
take care of your baby, and live
off of you, youre taking away
everything that attracted you to
him in the first place. Youre
basically making him into your
wife.
CUDDY
And how do you know what attracted
me to him in the first place?
HOUSE
He was like me, only safer.
CUDDY
Thats ridiculous.
HOUSE
He was an investigator, loving the
thrill of solving mysteries. He was
smart and witty and sarcastic.
(a little too close to
home)
He wasnt so good with people
sometimes, but once he felt
comfortable with you, he opened up.
Lucas is House 2.0, with softer,
less abrasive features.
Cuddy stops what shes doing. House has clearly hit a nerve.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 37.

CUDDY
First of all, I did not make Lucas
quit his job. He volunteered to
take care of Rachel when my babysitter quit without notice. Then he
was so good at it that he WANTED to
keep doing it. He talked me into
it. And he plans on going back to
being an investigator. Eventually.
She stands and faces House.
CUDDY (CONT'D)
Second of all, Lucas is not like
you at all. Not only is he sweet,
warm, and caring - but he is also
man enough to go for what he wants
when he has the chance, instead of
waiting until its too late. AND
hes happy. Something you will
never be.
House looks away, more hurt than hes willing to show.
HOUSE
Right then. I completely
misunderstood. Ill just let you
get back to your paperwork.
And he leaves.
A flash of remorse crosses Cuddys face - she knows shes
been too harsh.
CUDDY
House - waitShe follows him.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANNETTES ROOM -- DAY
House is about to enter Annettes room, Cuddy still chasing
him down.
CUDDY
Dammit, House! Will you just wait?!
Suddenly, he turns, real fear on his face. He blocks the door
so Cuddy cant go inside.
HOUSE
We need to evacuate the floor. Now.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 38.

CUDDY
What the hell-?
She looks over his shoulder at Annette, who now has very red
eyes and a rash.
HOUSE
Shes got the Ebola virus.
FADE OUT:
END OF ACT THREE

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 39.

ACT FOUR
FADE IN:
INT. ANNETTES CLEAN ROOM -- DAY
Annette has been quarantined in an air-tight room. She is
alone with her machines and IVs.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANNETTES CLEAN ROOM -- DAY
The Church Members stand outside the glass, praying fervently
for Annette.
Chase watches them from a distance. Then he turns and walks
away.
INT. LAB -- DAY
Chase walks in to find House, Cuddy, and the rest of the Team
all waiting impatiently.
CHASE
The ELISAs not done yet?
CUDDY
Thirty more seconds.
The silence and tension after this is so thick, it would make
anyone uncomfortable.
Finally, the ding of the timer.
Thirteen looks at the result.
THIRTEEN
Positive. Annette has Ebola.
Theres a dead silence.
Then Cuddy, stepping into her role as administrator, clears
her throat.
CUDDY
And the results for each of you?
Thirteen glances at them and relaxes.
Negative.

THIRTEEN

Theres a collective sigh of relief. Cuddy makes brief eye

contact with House, then leaves. He follows her.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 40.

INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY -- DAY
House keeps pace with Cuddy.
HOUSE
Theres an experimental vaccine. We
need to order it.
CUDDY
(not listening to him)
I need to inform the CDC. Evacuate
the hospital. Get in touch with
everyone whos had physical contact
with the patient since she got to
the United States.
(she stops for a moment)
Oh God - I need to call Lucas and
tell him I wont be home until
late.
House steps in front of her.
HOUSE
The vaccine. It was used on a
German scientist who pricked
herself with the virus. We need to
order it.
CUDDY
What? Did you not hear what I just
said? And how long would it take to
get here anyway?
HOUSE
(shrugs)
Ask the guys at the CDC; Im sure
they could get it right quick.
This brings Cuddy back to her senses.
CUDDY
That vaccine was never proven
effective. They were never actually
sure the German was infected.
HOUSE
They also never proved that she
wasnt. Its worth a shot.
Cuddy takes a long, suspicious look at House.
CUDDY
What are you doing here, House?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 41.

HOUSE
What do you mean? I thought I was
pestering you to order the vaccine
that would save my patients life.
But maybe Ive lost my pestering
touch, and you thought I was just
making small talk.
CUDDY
No. I mean - are you making
something small seem bigger than it
is? So that when you conquer it,
you can impress me with what a hero
you are?
House is thrown for a loop.
HOUSE
Wow. Whos the narcissist now? This
is about my patient. You know - the
missionary. Who has EBOLA.
Cuddy shakes her head, convinced now.
CUDDY
No, Im right. NONE of you including Foreman, who was
virtually covered in the womans
feces - caught the virus from her?
How is that even possible? After
HIV, Ebolas the deadliest virus
known to mankind.
(smiles)
Whats the accuracy rate for the
ELISA test?
HOUSE
Ninety-eight percent.
CUDDY
So theres a two percent chance of
false positives?
HOUSE
Youre letting your administrative
role overrule your good judgement.
CUDDY
Do the test again.
She turns and walks away, with House just watching her leave.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 42.

INT. CAFETERIA -- DAY
Wilson sits down at a table with a tray full of food. House
appears from nowhere and takes his French fries.
WILSON
I was going to eat those.
HOUSE
No you werent. It was always fated
that they would be mine - you just
didnt know it, you poor pawn of
destiny.
Wilson shakes his head and sits down.
WILSON
Shouldnt you be coming up with
some fantastic cure for Ebola right
about now?
HOUSE
Exactly - shouldnt I?
WILSON
Pardon me if this is too
colloquial, but - huh?
HOUSE
Cuddy wont let me. Shes morphed
into her alter ego: Hard-Ass
Hospital Administrator.
WILSON
Or HAHA for short.
HOUSE
(shrugs)
I never claimed to be a comic book
writer, did I?
Off Wilsons still-puzzled look.
HOUSE (CONT'D)
Shes insisting I run the ELISA
again. She doesnt believe the
patient actually has Ebola.
WILSON
Does she have reason?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 43.

HOUSE
She thinks she does - to keep the
hospital from the same dismal fate
that the Quarantine Unit in Reston,
Virginia got.
WILSON
Uh, our hospital isnt exactly a
storage unit for a bunch of crabeating macaques.
HOUSE
Exactly. So she shouldnt be so
concerned about the hospital being
torn down and having a daycare
built in its place.
(aside)
Well, unless shes sincere about
Lucas wanting to go back to work.
Then it would be highly convenient
for her.
Wilson shakes his head with disbelief.
WILSON
She actually said that was her
concern?
HOUSE
Not in so many words. But words are
overrated, remember?
WILSON
Yes, yes - I remember your new
catch-phrase.
(beat)
So, to summarize, youre saying
Cuddy is more concerned about the
reputation the hospital might get
if theres an Ebola outbreak than
she is about actually helping the
patient? Because shes an
administrator and its clouding her
judgement?
HOUSE
Thank you for catching up with me.
Your intellect is truly dizzying.
WILSON
It helps if the person youre
listening to is actually coherent
in his narrative of events.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 44.

Beat. He takes a bite of his sandwich and takes a long,
knowing look at House.
WILSON (CONT'D)
You want to know what I think?
HOUSE
Not really.
WILSON
I know you THINK thats Cuddys
motivation for what shes doing,
but what if she actually just likes
being with a man whos nice to her
and lets her relax and be happy?
HOUSE
Excuse me, but I think we took
separate forks on the road of
dialogue - when did we start
talking about Lucas?
WILSON
House, its always about Lucas!
Look, you always think your
problems are caused by factors
outside of yourself - in this case,
that the reason why Cuddys not
with you is because of Lucas.
(beat, to let it sink in)
But what if your problems are
actually consequences of your own
actions? What if Cuddys not with
you because of YOU?
HOUSE
Oh thats just so typical of an
oncologist! The cancer comes from
within. No wonder youre so selftormentingHe breaks off, his face glazed with that look he gets when he
has an epiphany.
Wilson sighs and quietly takes his French fries back.
House gets up and leaves.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANNETTES CLEAN ROOM -- DAY
House is about to enter Annettes room when Chase catches up
to him, handing him a piece of paper.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 45.

CHASE
Cuddy was right. She tested
negative. The first result was a
false positive.
House looks up and through the glass at Annette, whos now
yellow with jaundice.
HOUSE
I know. She doesnt have Ebola she has cancer.
What?

CHASE

But House is already breaking the quarantine barrier and

entering the clean room.
House!

CHASE (CONT'D)

He follows him.
INT. ANNETTES CLEAN ROOM -- DAY
Annette reacts with surprise to see House.
HOUSE
Why didnt you tell us youre an
alcoholic?
Chases eyes widen, but instead of saying anything to House,
he turns to watch Annette.
A look of knowing comes over her face, and she lies back on
her pillow.
ANNETTE
Ive been sober for five years.
HOUSE
It was still medically relevant.
ANNETTE
I just thought - with everything
happening so suddenly(sighs)
Until five years ago, I was a
drunken, drug-crazed mess. I was
depressed. Suicidal even.
(smiles)
But then I met God. He saved me
from that darkness. Brought me into
light.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 46.

ANNETTE (CONT'D)
You hear talk of born-again
Christians, and it just sounds so
cheesy - I know, because I used to
laugh, too. But thats the only way
to explain it, because I really was
reborn. Like a phoenix. I was given
a new life. So I gave up everything
I had - my career, my friends EVERYTHING - and devoted myself to
honouring Him.
CHASE
Thats why you went to the DRC.
ANNETTE
(nods)
I havent had a drink in five
years.
House moves closer to her.
HOUSE
(quieter)
You may have been given a new life,
but you werent given a new liver.
This hits a nerve. Annette turns away, hiding her tears.
ANNETTE
(whispers)
But we have this treasure in jars
of clay...
House leaves. Chase turns to follow him, but turns back.
CHASE
to show that this all-surpassing
power is from God and not from us.
Annette turns back to look at him, surprised-but hes already gone.
INT. RADIOLOGY -- DAY
Annette is in the MRI, getting a full-body scan. Foreman and
Taub are in the booth.
TAUB
So whats with you and Thirteen?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 47.

FOREMAN
Nothing. Were just finally
figuring out how to work together
again.
(points at the screen)
Geez. Look at that.
The image of Annettes liver is riddled with tumors.
TAUB
Its amazing shes survived this
long.
INT. HOUSES OFFICE - OUTER OFFICE -- DAY
House sits with the Team (minus Chase), going over Annettes
scans.
HOUSE
The patient has end-stage liver
cancer, caused by Cirrhosis, which
caused gastrointestinal bleeding.
THIRTEEN
Why didnt the original blood tests
show us the cancer?
HOUSE
Blood tests are inconclusive for
liver cancer.
**Insert Houses explanation for how the diagnosis occurred,
complete with graphic illustration.**
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANNETTES ROOM -- DAY
Chase watches as the Church Members sit in chairs around
Annette, laying hands on her and fervently praying for her.
But her eyes are open.
Wilson then enters, and the Church Members are forced to
leave, the door closing behind them.
HOUSE (V.O.)
She has a day, maybe two, left.
Shes lucky shes not suffering
more pain.
Chase watches through the window as Wilson delivers this
news. Annette nods and begins to cry.
Chase turns and walks away.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 48.

INT. CHAPEL -- DAY
Peaceful. Several people are scattered about, quietly
praying.
Chase enters and moves to the front. He crosses himself, then
lights a candle.
Taking a deep breath, he leaves without looking behind him.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANNETTES ROOM -- EVENING
House waits outside the closed door of Annettes room. Cuddy
approaches.
CUDDY
I need to talk to you.
HOUSE
Theres no need to gloat. So you
were right. Monkeys with
typewriters and all that.
CUDDY
What? No. Thats not why Im here.
Although it is nice to be right.
Well?

HOUSE

CUDDY
What I said before, comparing you
and Lucas...
HOUSE
Dont mention it.
CUDDY
No - it was cruel. I was angry and
defensive, but that was no reason
to be mean.
House refuses to show how much this means to him. Cuddy moves
to leave.
HOUSE
Lucas must be really special.
Youve been a lot happier since
hes been in your life.
CUDDY
He is. Thank you.
(beat)

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 49.

CUDDY (CONT'D)
And Ill take that as my cue to
leave - you know, get out while Im
still ahead and before this Kodak
moment gets ruined.
Right.

HOUSE

She takes a few steps away.

But then, with an expression like shes not sure if shell
regret what shes about to say in the future, she turns back.
CUDDY
But you know, hes not the only
reason Ive been happier lately.
HOUSE
Right. Being a parent and all that.
That wasnt what she was going to say.
Right.

CUDDY

Now she actually does turn and walk away, with House watching
her leave.
Then Annettes room door opens and a NURSE exits. House walks
inside.
INT. ANNETTES HOSPITAL ROOM -- EVENING
Annette, really frail now, is just settling back into her
pillow.
HOUSE
Where are all your friends now?
Annette smiles at him.
ANNETTE
Prayer vigil.
She chuckles.
ANNETTE (CONT'D)
Actually, Im kind of glad theyre
not here. Theyre sweet - but also
very annoying.
HOUSE
Is there anybody else we could
call?

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 50.

Annette shakes her head, her smile disappearing.
House considers, then grabs a chair and pulls it up to her
bed.
Annettes eyes widen, then fill with tears.
ANNETTE
(laughs)
You know, this is pretty ironic, my
dying.
House just looks at her.
ANNETTE (CONT'D)
I never actually liked Lhoja, you
know. Administrative work bores me,
and thats all I was doing there.
But it was Gods work. I went
because I wanted to show everyone
Id changed. I wanted to show God
Id changed.
(to herself)
But He already knew that.
(looks at House)
I used to be an artist. A really
good artist. But when I met God, I
thought Id fall back into my old
life if I kept doing my art. I
loved it too much - it had to be
sinful.
She winces with pain. She shouldnt be talking this much, but
she needs to tell someone the truth shes realizing.
ANNETTE (CONT'D)
(crying)
I shouldve realized that where I
was - in the midst of my old life was where God found me in the first
place. He changed me while I was
there. I didnt need to fear my old
way of life because I wasnt the
same person anymore and those old
vices didnt hold sway over the new
me...
This is hitting home for House.
ANNETTE (CONT'D)
(having an epiphany)
God never needed me to prove
anything to Him.

HOUSE - "Malaise" - 2015-11-05 51.

ANNETTE (CONT'D)
I was actually just trying to prove
Id changed to myself. But in the
process, I just made myself
miserable.
She cant talk anymore - this excitement has weakened her too
much.
House quietly takes her hand.
INT. HOSPITAL FOYER - NIGHT
Wilson, wearing his coat, juggles a briefcase and everything
else hes taking home for the night as he walks toward the
front doors.
But then he looks up and notices House sitting next to
Annette, holding her hand. He watches as House gets more
comfortable in his chair, propping his feet up. He looks like
hes settling in for the night.
Wilson shakes his head, unable to believe what hes seeing.
Slowly, a smile dawns on his face, and he leaves the hospital
with a lighter step.
