The film suddenly shifts modes and turns into a family melodrama, not
the generic form in which the narrative of coming out is usually cast in
American culture. One function of homosexuality in the plot, then, is
to obstruct the closure offered by the wedding in favor of the closure
presented at the end of the film. (page 6)

Question:Manyofthefilmswehavewatchedsincethemidtermexamtakeplaceinthepost1965era
ofnewAsianimmigration.HowdidthechangeofnewimmigrationchangeAsianAmericanfilms?
Selected
Answer:
When our class first started and up until the midterm, Asian American films were more
about how we treated Asian Americans and how we portrayed them. Bitter Tea of
General Yen for example, was a movie where it portrayed the General as an evil person
who was barbaric.
Since then, the post 1965 era of Asian American films has been more evoloved
about Asian Americans having their own identity, breaking away from the Asian
stereotype, and facing racism. In the movie, Wedding Banquet, the film shows the
difficulty of expressing homosexuality within the Asian community. The man has a hard
time telling his father about his homosexuality and goes through much trouble to make
sure they wouldnt find out. This is also a common dilemma in most modern families,
this shows that Asian Americans becoming more Americanized. The traditional way
of Asian Americans isnt holding up with the newer generation of immigrants and this
movie expressed that.
Mississippi Masala tackles another issue that many Asian Americans
have to deal with, and that is racism and having to face criticism as a interracial couple.
I believe that the movie trys to show us that racism holds us back from progressing as a
society. Demetrius and Mina had to go through much criticism from their own
communities and eventually being shunned out from one.
The change that Asian Americans films have been from pre-1965 until present
in my eyes is an improved outlook. I say improved because instead of movies that have
portrayed Asians in the wrong way because of various reasons (war with a certain
country for example), they are now more about them fitting in with society and tackling
other issues. This doesnt mean that they dont have any more problems because they
do, as does many other different races/cultures in America.
