NFL BRIEFS

Dalton keeps Cincy unbeaten

FROM WIRE REPORTS

Bengals QB throws for

3 TDs; defense halts
Manziel in second half
CINCINNATI Andy Dalton threw three touchdown
passes and played lead blocker
in a near-perfect performance
that kept the Bengals unbeaten.
Dalton connected with tight
end Tyler Eifert for three scores
and played the role of blocker
on Mohamed Sanus reverse for
a touchdown, setting up Cincinnatis 31-10 victory over the
Cleveland Browns on Thursday night.
The Bengals improved to
8-0 for the first time in franchise history, their longest winning streak within a season.
Coming off an emotional 1610 victory in Pittsburgh on
Sunday that gave them control
of the AFC North, the Bengals
dominated the Browns (2-7)
and Johnny Manziel in the second half.
Cincinnati was up only 1410 at the half. After that, the
Browns managed only 32 yards
and two first downs.
It was a night for the Bengals to show how far theyve
come in a year. And no one has
improved more than Dalton,
who had his worst showing
during a 24-3 loss to the
Browns in a Thursday night
game at Paul Brown Stadium
last November.
He threw touchdown passes
of 9 and 2 yards to Eifert in the
first half, the latter after a
Browns penalty kept a drive
alive. Dalton also played lead
blocker on Sanus 25-yard TD
reverse in the fourth quarter, a
play that took the Browns by
such surprise that there was
nobody there for the quarterback to touch.
His 19-yarder to Eifert put
Cincinnati in control and gave

the tight end nine touchdown

catches, tying the Bengals record for a tight end and giving
him the NFL lead.
Dalton finished 21 of 27 for
234 yards with a passer rating
of 139.8.
Manziel got a rematch
against the team that taunted
and then tormented him in his
NFL debut last December, a
30-0 Bengals win. Coach Marvin Lewis referred to him as a
midget leading up to the
game, and several players

mocked his money-rubbing

gesture while frustrating him.
Instead of mocking him this
time, they chased him around
before ultimately shutting him
down.
Manziel had some of his
best NFL moments during a
10-play, 92-yard drive late in
the first half that cut it to 14-10.
He scrambled and threw a 12yard touchdown pass to Duke
Johnson with 19 seconds left,
the type of play the Browns had
expected to see a lot but have

Seahawks Lockette
released from hospital
Seattle WR Ricardo Lockette said on social media that he
has been released from a Dallas
hospital following surgery to
stabilize ligaments in his neck.
Lockette posted messages to
Twitter and Instagram on
Thursday saying, Thanks for
all the support. Ive just been
released from the hospital and
the road to recovery has started!!!
Lockette was injured Sunday in Seattles 13-12 win over
Dallas on a hit from Cowboys
safety Jeff Heath during a punt
return. Lockette was knocked
out and laid motionless on the
field for several minutes. He
was eventually strapped to a
backboard and taken off the
field.
Lockette underwent surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas on Monday.

Lions fire president

and GM after 1-7 start
ALLEN PARK, Mich.
The one-win Detroit Lions,
looking nothing like the team
that reached the playoffs last
season, fired team president
Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew on Thursday and promised to bring in
new leadership to put a consistent winner on the field.
We are very disappointed
with the results of the season so
far and believe a change in
leadership was necessary, said
owner Martha Firestone Ford,
reading from a prepared statement. She did not take questions.
The Lions are an NFCworst 1-7 under second-year
coach Jim Caldwell, whose staff
was not affected by the changes
a week after he replaced some
assistants, including offensive
coordinator Joe Lombardi.
Sheldon White, the Lions
vice president of pro personnel

and a 19-year veteran of the organization, will be the teams

acting general manager. Allison
Maki, chief financial officer,
will oversee business operations.

Eagles Mathews has

bested Murray so far
PHILADELPHIA DeMarco Murray got the bigger
contract. Ryan Mathews has
the better numbers.
Still, theres no running back
controversy with the Eagles,
who visit the Cowboys on Sunday.
Its about the team. Its not
about me, said Mathews, who
missed Thursdays practice because of a groin injury.
Mathews leads the Eagles
with 342 yards rushing and a
6.1 average. Murray has rebounded after a terrible first
month, but only has 307 yards
with an average of 3.5 per carry
one year after leading the NFL
in rushing with Dallas.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

NY Jets: Veteran C Nick
Mangold practiced Thursday,
the first time he participated in
team drills since injuring his
neck late in New Yorks loss at
New England on Oct. 25. The
Jets are optimistic that Mangold could start Sunday against
the Jaguars.
Pittsburgh: The Steelers
signed veteran WR and return
specialist Jacoby Jones, hoping
to give their special teams a
boost. Jones, 31, was released by
San Diego earlier this week after averaging 21.4 yards per
kickoff return for the Chargers.
Tennessee: WR Kendall
Wright was ruled out of Sundays game against the Saints
because of a sprained medial
collateral ligament in his left
knee.
Washington: LB Keenan
Robinson missed practice with
a shoulder injury.
