Summer Service and Learning Program in Rural China

The Summer Service and Learning Programme in Rural China (SSLP) was initiated by
Tsinghua University, Beijing in 2006. Ever since then the Programme has been implemented
for nine years in a row. A total of 1,725 students and 280 faculty members from Tsinghua
University and 720 college students and faculty members from other countries have been
dispatched in teams, to rural counties.

Every summer, Tsinghua University and Tseng Hin Pei Charity Fund recruit 180 Tsinghua
volunteers, 150 volunteers from USA and other countries. Volunteers are dispatched in
teams to perform services for 3 weeks in 30 rural counties. Each team comprises one
Tsinghua teacher, six Tsinghua students, and five non-Tsinghua volunteers. Volunteers
provide diversified services to the rural students, including English teaching, social survey
conducting various cultural activities and intercultural communication exercises. Volunteers
will bring information, confidence and hope to the locals, expanding their horizons of the
world. At the same time, this cultural immersion allow volunteers to actually experience
the daily life of rural China throughout the whole Programme. New lifestyle, new culture
awaits, the volunteers will fill their days with new discoveries and stories to truly understand
China. It is an invaluable life experience for volunteers to participate in the Summer
