Shawnee wins South Jersey Group IV championship

The Renegades defeat Eastern, 2-0, to win first sectional championship in nine years
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Shawnee High School girls' soccer knows how it feels to fall one
win short of a championship.
In 2014, Shawnee was tied with
Lenape High School for nearly
the entire match in the South Jersey Group IV championship
game before the Indians scored
with less than five minutes left to
stun the Renegades, 1-0.
On Oct. 31, Shawnee battled
Eastern Regional High School in
the championship game of the
South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association Tournament. Again, the
Renegades were tied with their
opponents for most of the match,
and again, Shawnee lost, 1-0, after
allowing a second-half goal.
Back on the big stage in the
South Jersey Group IV championship game against Eastern last
Thursday, the Renegades were able
to erase the heartbreaking memories of past championship games.
After going 0-2-1 in the regular
season against Eastern, the Renegades finally overcame their division rivals in the biggest game of
the season, defeating the Vikings,
2-0, to win the South Jersey
Group IV championship. It is the
first sectional title for Shawnee
since it won the South Jersey
Group III championship in 2006.
The win meant the world to all

of the players, but especially to
seniors such as Alexis Palladino
and Amanda Hartwell-Miller who
had come so close in the past.

This means the world to us,

Palladino said. It's so special
right now. It's just an amazing
feeling.

After four years, we finally

beat them, we finally got it done
in the finals, we finally won,
Hartwell-Miller said.

The 2015 season was a year of

redemption for Shawnee. For the
seniors who had been on the team
since 2012, every season until this
year ended with the Renegades
losing to district-rival Lenape in
the playoffs. Coming into 2015,
Lenape had won eight straight
South Jersey Group IV championships.
This year, Shawnee ran into
the Indians in the quarterfinals of
the playoffs. The teams battled to
a 0-0 tie in regulation. In overtime, junior Christina Corbi
scored the game-winning goal,
giving the Renegades their longawaited playoff win over Lenape.
Palladino said the quarterfinal
win gave the team the belief it
needed heading into the sectional
tournament's last two rounds.
That set the momentum for
us, she said. We wanted to get
that feeling of winning.
As big as it was to end Lenape's
championship streak, Shawnee
still had to overcome another
team that has haunted it recently.
Eastern had beaten Shawnee
twice in October. Both times, the
score was 1-0, and both times,
Eastern's leading scorer, Amirah
Ali, had scored the Vikings lone
goal.

coach Drew Wagner decided to do

This holiday season, support local businesses

Dan McDonough Jr.

is the season, as they say. Tis

the season to be jolly. Tis the
season to bundle up and drink
hot chocolate. Tis the season to spend
extra time with loved ones. Tis almost
the season to start your holiday shopping if you havent already. And tis
the season to shop local.
Next week marks the official start to
the holiday shopping season, but if
youve been out and about this month,
you have noticed holiday decorations
and specials at stores throughout our
area.
Much of the attention of the holiday
shopping season falls on two days
Black Friday and, now, Cyber Monday but dont forget to shop local for
your holiday gifts.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the re-

gion, has immense benefits on the

local economy.
Even companies as large as American Express are touting the importance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Studies have found
that almost $6 billion is spent at small
businesses on that day each year!
A vibrant and successful local business community has a trickle-down effect on our own pockets. Just think:

Successful local businesses make

other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more ratables, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attractive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, support your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
fighting an uphill battle against the
marketing dollars of the big box
stores. Lets all help them out by opening their doors and opening our wallets to them. We can make it a truly
happy holiday season.

Writer: Say yes to Tobacco 21
to help protect our youth
According to the American Heart Association, smoking is responsible for killing
more than 480,000 Americans annually
including 11,800 New Jerseyans making
it the No. 1 cause of death. Its no secret
smoking results in heart disease, stroke,
cancers and many other devastating health
issues. Yet smoking remains a crisis in the
Garden State, especially when it comes to
our youth.
In fact, 95 percent of smokers start the
habit before the age of 21. Each year, 24,500
New Jersey youth try cigarettes for the
first time while 5,400 children become new
regular, daily smokers.
As a pediatrician, I support every effort
to deter tobacco getting in the hands of our
kids. Im advocating for the passage of the
Tobacco 21 bill (A3254), which would re-

duce youth tobacco use in New Jersey by

raising the minimum legal sales age of tobacco products to 21. Modeled after a similar effort in Massachusetts, which saw a 50
percent decrease in youth smoking, this
bill would help protect our adolescents
from making a decision that would negatively affect their health for years to come.
We know that this plan works. Its seen
success in Needham, Mass., Hawaii and
several other locations including New York
City. We saw success when a similar approach was taken to address underage
drinking. We raised the minimum purchasing age to 21 and saw drops in highway
alcohol-related deaths and high school
drinking. Although teen drinking wasnt
eliminated, the problem substantially improved. Its our hope that we can gain similar success with Tobacco 21.
Its time for New Jersey to act. With little/no cost to taxpayers and the improved

welfare of our children, saying yes to Tobacco 21 is the right choice to make.
Charles Garbarino, MD

Why help others when

our own students suffer?
Every year, we are asked to back an increase in property taxes to support local
education needs. We hear reports daily
about the poor education available in the
inner cities and their need for increased
funding locally, from the state and the federal government. Reports indicate that
even in our affluent area, many graduates
are accomplishing less than average on the
qualifying SAT tests, and more than 50 percent are not ready to enter college despite
the highest expenditure per student in the
world on education. Many graduate from

a couple things to give his team a
boost. First, he decided to have
senior Brittany Hartwell-Miller
mark Ali the entire match in
hopes of shutting her down. Not
only did Ali fail to score, she didn't even get a shot on goal.
Brittany Hartwell-Miller was
an absolute stud today marking
Ali, Wagner said. We have so
much respect for her. We don't
usually man mark anybody.
Wagner also decided to motivate his team by reminding it of
how close it came last year.

We used the Lenape South

Jersey final from last year as motivation, the devastation we felt
getting scored on in the last 10
minutes, Wagner said. We didn't want to go through that
again.
Brittany Hartwell-Miller said
the Renegades had in the back of
their minds all season how they
had come so close last year.
Last year, we made it here and
then fell short, she said. So this
year we wanted to get to the same
point and finish.
Wagner was glad the seniors on
his team would not end their high
school careers without a championship.
Most of these seniors have

been with me for four years, and

I've seen them mature from when
they were freshmen and just become something special, Wagner
said. They've taken this program
to another level, and it was so rewarding for me to see them take
that next step.
Now, Shawnee's focus shifts to
a new goal. The Renegades were
scheduled to play in the state
semifinals on Nov. 17, with the
hope of advancing to the state
championship game. Shawnee
has never won a state championship in girls' soccer.
We have a lot of confidence
going in, Palladino said. We
have a job to get done, and we're
not done yet.

Pinelands Library offers Browse Books, Paws to Read and more

By MARGARET LAFFERTY
Medford Library Association
Hello again! It is November,
and the leaves are quickly falling
from the trees. And how about
those acorns? Have you ever seen
so many of them or such large
ones? Scientists call it a mast
year for oak trees, but have no
definitive reason as to what causes it. Maybe you could find out at
the library.
Medford Library Association
provides a special service to the
patrons of Pinelands Library. It is
called Browse Books. We purchase extra copies of popular
books in high demand. These
books are tagged separately and
are not part of the countywide
system. If you are on a long waiting list for a new release, stop into
the Pinelands to see if the book is
on our browse shelf. If it is, you
can check it out that day rather

than wait.
Another one of our special
services is Paws to Read, a program designed to help children
with their reading skills. The
paws belong to registered therapy
dogs Brooke, a 6-year-old Standard Poodle, and Ocho, a 4-yearold German Shepard. Children
can register to read to their furry
friends for 15 minutes, and both
dogs love a good story. This special time helps children of all
ages improve both their literacy
skills and their confidence.
On a personal note, I took my
granddaughter to the library last
week. She is 2, and it was her first
trip. Now what, you may ask,
could a 2-year-old do at the library? Lots! There is so much
more than just books. There were
toys, puzzles, age appropriate
computers and an amazing
aquarium maintained by Dave
Parson, a teacher in our local
school district. It was the first

Wednesday of the month, so there

was even a make and take craft.
Even the little ones have fun at
the library, although she was
wondering why she could not eat
the counted candy corn in a jar

for this month's raffle. Just guess

the number.
Be sure to remember the adult
raffle this month. The prize includes books, a beautiful framed
photo of Main Street Medford

and a gift certificate to Braddocks. The photo is on display in

the lobby of the restaurant.
Until next time, keep raking
those leaves and turning those
pages. Happy Thanksgiving!

The first part consisted of
clearing the area and defining the
shape, while the second part involved removing the weeds and
planting the flowers around the
sign as instructed by the township.

Of course, this was a process

that entailed some major planning and pre-work.
After the township ordered the
sign in the summer, Gannon went
around and looked for places to
get flowers in the fall.
Gannon couldnt say enough
about the assistance he received
from Laurel Oak Garden Center
in Mt. Laurel and Flaggs Landscaping in Moorestown.
They were a huge help, Gannon said.
Gannon spent five-plus-hour
days each time he worked on the
project, but with the help of the
landscapers and other Eagle
Scouts from Troop 26, he was able
please see SCOUTING, page 15

Scouting has valuable lessons

SCOUTING
Continued from page 14
to complete the project, and he
couldnt be happier about it.
It means that all my work over
the eight years in Boy Scouts has
paid off, Gannon said. It looks
really good for colleges as well.
Its something I can add to my re-

sume and something that will

help me in my job search down
the road.
Gannon alluded to how his parents always stressed how beneficial the accomplishment would
be for college and building his resume.
Gannons father Michael spoke
volumes about how far the Scout
experience will take him in life.
He mentioned how valuable the

lessons hes learned over the last

few months will be to his future.
Doing an Eagle project can be
a difficult and challenging learning experience for the boys,
Michael said. You learn to deal
with people that you have no control over, including those that
want to see you succeed and others that don't care. People and environments don't always cooperate. We're proud of you, Gannon!

Tecce plays the character Pig Pen in The Peanuts Movie

TECCE
Continued from page 2
ed.
It wasnt until the following
summer after the initial audition

that everything was official and

he signed the contract.
AJ was told he had to keep the
secret until last Thanksgiving,
when all of the characters appeared on the Today show for a
cast reveal.
The group started recording

the voices of the animated characters for the movie in November

2014, and finished this past summer.
All of AJs recordings were
done at Soundtracks Studio in
New York City where he traveled
five or six times to record for Pig
Pen. During these recording sessions, AJs director, Steve Martino, would describe the scene and
let AJ look over some lines. They
would then both work through
them, trying things different
ways, so the animators had some
dialogue to work with.
He also did some commercials
and promotional recordings during his sessions at Soundtracks
Studio.
Though this was by far the
biggest project he ever worked on,
he said he was comfortable because of Martino.
It was great to work with
Steve. He taught me so much
about really using my voice to act,
so our recording sessions were a
lot of fun. He was so easy to work
with, so I never really got nervous, AJ said.
Acting is a skill AJ picked up
rather easily at a young age and
has run with it for about 10 years.
It started as something fun to do
to pass the time while his three
older brothers were in school.
AJs unique personality was
one that was not hard to recognize at a young age, and it wasnt
long after his mom contacted an
agent that AJ was off auditioning
for different roles.

Special to The Sun

AJ Tecce poses with his fellow cast members at the red carpet premiere of The Peanuts Movie in Hollywood. Tecce played the voice of
Pig Pen.
I really like the different people that you meet. Every role is
different and that keeps things
fun and exciting, AJ said.
He had a very outgoing personality at a young age, which is
half the battle with young actors.
He was very comfortable separating and going into casting offices
with strangers, and took direction well, his mother Karen said.
Though Tecce knows things
will start getting more complicated as he transitions into high
school and more commitments,
she believes AJ will stay involved
with acting as long as it is still fun
for him.

We are going to follow his

lead, Tecce said.
The experience of being in a
Hollywood movie that is in theaters across the country as a 13
year old will be an experience AJ
can take with him for years to
come.
We are very proud of AJ and
how hard he has worked over the
years. Going to auditions can take
up a lot of time, and he has
missed things that were important to him to go to auditions for
jobs he never got. In this business, there is more rejection than
success, and luck plays a very big
part in getting a role. I think we
all realize how fortunate he was
to have had this experience and
are grateful for the opportunity,
Tecce said.
AJ has taken a remarkably
unique path directly from Memorial Middle Schools Homeroom
Headlines show straight to the
big time.
In fact, he returned from Hollywood last week after flying out for
the red carpet premiere of the
movie where he posed for cast
pictures and was introduced to
the media.
AJ walked the red carpet for
pictures and did interviews with
reporters. He also attended the
big pre-premiere party where
please see CAST, page 17

NOV. 1824, 2015 THE MEDFORD SUN 17

Cast on Today show

CAST
Continued from page 16
there was a Charlie Brown house
with real snow, and a football field
where you could try to kick the
football and not miss, as Charlie
Brown is famous for doing.
The cast also got to meet and
take pictures with Meghan Trainor, who has a song in the movie.

The crew then got to see the

movie for the first time in 3D, and
the following day they got to go to
Snoopys Hollywood Walk of
Fame Star Ceremony.
I felt like a celebrity! When we
got off the Peanuts bus at the
premiere, there were a lot of people calling out our names and
asking for autographs. I couldnt
believe that people knew my
name and had pictures of me,
AJ said.
