THE

OlF THE POT OF GOLD'

-"
Adapted by GLADYS GIBSON
SCENE I
The Flower family lived in a little house in a broad grassy
meadow, which sloped a few rods from their door down to a gentle,
silvery river. There was Father Fldwer, Mother Flower and their
child, Flax.
Father Flower had in his flower garden only those
flowers of complimentary colors. They grew in adjoining beds, and,
as often as possible, were rhymed in' their names.
.
-One day, when there had been <it heavy shower and a beautiful
rainbow, Father Flower and Flax were strolling about the garden.
He told Flax all about the Pot of Gold at the end of the Rainbow,
and repeated a;,-littl~verse about it to her. '
"Oh what is it shining so golden clear
At the rainbow's foot on the dark green hill?
'Tis the Pot of Gold, that for many a year
Has shone, and is shining and dazzling still.
And whom is it for, 0 Pilgrim, pray?
.
For thee, Sweetheart, should'st thou go that way."
When the rainbow appeared again.. Flax saw that one end of it
seemed to touch the ground at the foot of a tall pine tree.
"I will try the end where the tall pine tree is," said she, running
off towards the woods.

LEGEND

SCENE

II

As Flax ran through the woods the clouds over on the northwest piled up very high and black. Everything was still and dark
and solemn in the woods. But on .and on she sped through the wind
and rain and the thunder.
She was very much afraid that she could
not reach the tall pine before the sun shone out -and the rainbow
came. Just as she was becoming very much discouraged, a joyful
little wood nymph greeted her. aqd encouraged her to continue and
followed her.
SCENE

III

Flax sped on for dear' life. Red and green and golden rays were
already falling thick around her, and at the foot of ~the pine tree
something was shining wonderfully
clear and bright.' At last she
reached it, and just at that instant the rainbow became a perfect one,:
and there at the foot of the wonderful arch of glory was the Pot of
Gold. She sank down beside it, and put her hands on it.. Trembling, she lifted the lid. She expected; of course, to find it full of
the gold pieces that her father had spoken about.
To her great
astonishment the first thing she saw was the face of her father.
As.
she looked longer, she saw her mother smiling up at her out of the
golden gloom iriS'i'clthe Pot.
