Curso: Biologa
Tema: Osmosis

PART I: DESIGN

Objective: Observe what changes occurs in the potatoes by osmosis.

Question: Does the potatoes mass will change when osmosis occur in
hypertonic and hypotonic solutions?
Research: Osmosis is the passage of a solvent (such as water) from a lowerconcentration solution to a higher-concentration solution, through a semipermeable membrane (that allows the solvent to pass but not what is dissolved
in it) separating the two solutions. The flow of solvent stops when both solutions
become equal in concentration. In nature, osmosis is an essential process by
means of which nutrients are delivered to the cells.
Hypothesis: Yes, the potatoes mass will change because when osmosis
occurs between the potato in the hypertonic and hypotonic solutions, by fact we
know that the potato is a semi-permeable membrane, so by logic there will be
some reactions in the potato, the principal reaction is the change of mass.
Variables:
-Independent Variable: The hypertonic and hypotonic solutions color
-Dependent Variable: The potatoes mass
- Constant Variable: The amount of the hypertonic and hypotonic solutions
in the beaker
Manipulation of Variables:
-Independent Variable: By osmosis, the hypertonic and hypotonic solutions
color will change.
-Dependent Variable: By osmosis, it will be observed if there is change in
the potato or not (especially by its mass).
-Constant Variable: The amount of the solutions. The quantity of the
hypertonic and hypotonic solutions in a beaker, will be
of 250ml.
Materials:
- 250ml beaker
- 2 potatoes

-Measurement cylinder (100ml)

- Water with salt (Hypertonic Solution) 250 ml

- Electronic Scale
- Water (Hypotonic Solution)
- Knife

Safety: Use lab coat all the time during the experiment.

Steps:
-Cut the potatoes in half and place each half in different beakers.
- In the measurement cylinder, measure 100 ml of each substance before
putting it to the beaker.

- Measure 50 grams of salt.

-In one beaker add 250ml of water which is the hypotonic solution and in the
other beaker add 250ml of water with SALT which is the hypertonic solution.

-Wait between 15 minutes and see if there is any change in the potatoes.
-Changes or no, take notes on the experiment.
-After the results are gained, make tables and/or bar graphs, take notes to see
if the hypothesis is correct or not.

CONCLUSIONS:
- I can conclude saying that my hypothesis was right. After the potatoes had been
introduced in the solution, potato 1 that was introduced into the hypertonic solution

(water with salt) and potato 2 that was introduced into the hypotonic solution
(Water), both potatoes changed their mass.
- I think that my experiment will be better if for next time, instead of 2 solutions,
maybe I can add 4 solutions, to see some different results, and changes of the
potatoes mass.
- Also I think that for next time, I need to use safety goggles for more security in my
experiment.
