Enlarging Our Lives
St. Edward’s University in Austin is hosting the Most Reverend
John McCarthy Lecture Series on the Catholic Church in the
21st Century on Tues. Mar. 2 at 5pm in Jones Auditorium in
the Robert and Pearle Ragsdale Center at 3001 S. Congress
Ave. The series will feature Dr. Kathleen Sprows Cummings,
Acting Director for the Cushwa Center for the Study of
American Catholicism at the University of Notre Dame. Join us
as she discusses, “Enlarging our Lives: Reflections on Faith,
Feminism, and American Catholic History." Lecture is free
and open to the public. Reception to follow the event. Valet
parking is provided.
Marriage Prep
The UCC will be hosting a marriage prep workshop on April
16-17. 12 couples have already signed up! If you are
interested, please contact Deacon John De La Garza at

World Youth Day 2011
World Youth Day will be held in August 2011 in Madrid,
Spain. Join around 200 nations gather and celebrate being
“Rooted and Build Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith.”
Alison Koederitz from the diocesan Youth and Young Adult
Office will be at Mass and Carbos on March 3rd to discuss the
diocesan plan for the WYD trip.

The 2nd Sunday of Lent
Rules for Fasting and Abstinence During Lent
Generally, all Catholics 18—59 years of age are obliged to fast
on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, Catholics
aged 14 years and older must abstain from meat on Ash
Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during Lent.
Fasting, as explained by U.S. bishops, is only having one full
meal. Some food is permitted at the other usual meal times as
long as they do not equal another full meal.
Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not eggs, milk
products, seasonings and condiments made from animal fat, or
products made from meat juices, such as gravies or broths.
Lenten Soup Suppers
Throughout the season of Lent, the UCC and St. Austin’s will
be hosting Friday night soup suppers at 5:30pm followed by
Stations of the Cross at 6:30 pm each week. If you would like
to help here at the UCC on February 26 and March 26, please
contact Julie Ulrich at utulrichs@yahoo.com. To help with St.
Austin’s on the other Fridays, please contact Linda Cartwright
at lcartwright@staustin.org.
Holy Week Planning Meeting
The UCC will be hosting a Holy Week planning meeting on
Wednesday, March 3rd at 7pm in the library. Anyone wishing
to help plan our Holy Week liturgies is encouraged to attend.
Phonathon
The UCC’s annual Phonathon will begin Sunday, February 28!
This year, the Diocese will match all donations in order to help
eliminate the UCC’s debt, so please consider donating! If you
are interested in donating, but would not like to be called,
please visit http://www.utcatholic.org/support/phonathon/.
Make sure to mark that it is for Phonathon.
Students, we are still in need of volunteers to help out! If you
want to help, but are uncomfortable with calling, there are still
other ways you can help! Contact Ana-Cristina for more
