RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS SUPPORT FOR CURRENT PROGRAMS AND
PROPOSING NEW INITIATIVES FOR IUB’S DIVERSITY MISSION
1 WHEREAS, Indiana University Bloomington lacks a unified diversity mission that
2 prepares the campus and its students for the global 21st century; and, 3 4 WHEREAS, There is little coordinated effort among academic and diversity units, and 5 culture centers lack the support they need to function fully as sites for promoting cultural 6 diversity and understanding; and, 7 8 WHEREAS, The situation correlates to the low retention rates of students and faculty 9 from underserved communities and the deficits among students’ cultural literacy; and, 10 11 WHEREAS, These deficits affect IUB’s national standing and long-term viability, as 12 seen in its low diversity-index ranking among the best public universities in the US (even 13 behind Purdue and IUPUI); 14 15 THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED, That the Student Congress here assembled 16 make the following recommendation to support (1) The empowerment of culture centers 17 by allocating university funds for space expansion at such centers and granting greater 18 independences to culture centers and (2) The establishment of a Center for Multicultural 19 Research and Engagement (CMRE).
