Cleaning and Corrosion Treatment for

Aluminium Alloy
a. Objective:
To clean and treat corrosion on aluminium alloy.
b. List of tools and equipment:
Plastic scrapper, masking tape, scoth brite, steel bowl, paint
removal (Non Flammable), Paint spray, Zinc Dichromate spray, MEK
Cleaner, Thinner, old cloth.
c. Safety Precaution:
1. Wear safety glasses
2. Wear safety breathing mask
3. Wear a proper attire and apron
4. Wear safety boots
5. Handle chemical items with glove
6. Avoid chemical make contact with skin and eyes
7. Wet old cloth with water before throwing it into the rubbish bin.
8. Clean tools with thinner and water.
d. Procedure:
1. Safety around the workshop was observed and equipment was
prepared accordingly.
2. The work area was prepared and corrosion treatment was
started.
3. Protective coating and trace of corrosion was removed.
4. Protective coating was removed by applying paint remover.

5. Plastic scraper was used to remove the paint.

6. The component was washed with water after paint was

removed.

7. MEK was spread on the component using a scoth brite until the
surface is perfectly cleaned.

8. The component was washed again with water to remove the

MEK and inspection of corrosion was done.
9. After inspection, water break test was performed with a low
pressure of water supply to check wether the surface of the
component is perfectly clean.

10. Then, alodine was applied immediately after water break test
while the component is still wet.

11. After alodine was applied the component was left to dry.

12. After 5-10 minutes, the component was rinse with low
pressure of water supply to remove excess alodine.
13. It was then, left to dry.
14. Lastly, primer was sprayed on the component.

e. Result:
After inspection was made thoroughly, no corrosion was found on
the component. Therefore, no mechanical corrosion removal was

made as there was no corrosion. It was then continued to alodizing

process.
f. Discussion:
No mechanical corrosion removal was made as there was no
corrosion.
g. Conclusion:
1. Water break test was done to detect some traces of foreign
object on the components.
2. Alodine was immediately applied to the wet surface of the
component to ensure corrosion will not take place the surface .
3. No corrosion was found on the component.
