Project Thanksgiving is needed more
than ever this yearand you can help.
{ BY SHARON HARRIS-ZLOTNICK }
Area Salvation Army reps were at the Cumberland Mall this past weekend promoting Project Thanksgiving. Back row (l. to r.): Myrna Keller,

and Reysa Robles.
n Thanksgiving Day, Americans count their blessings. A caring community always helps needy
friends and neighbors. As New Jersey's poorest
county, many Cumberland County families again face
unemployment challenges in 2015.
For the seventh year, Project Thanksgiving and the
Salvation Army of Vineland/Millville and Bridgeton are
uniting to distribute turkeys throughout Cumberland
County. The Gloucester County turkey drive supports the
Food Bank of South Jersey.
Longtime friends Alex Kaganzev and Steve Plevins are
again directing the program, each helped by years of
experience working within New Jersey's state government to assist disadvantaged populations. In 2009, they
replicated a successful Philadelphia food drive program
to launch Project Thanksgiving.
We are thrilled with the consistent growth of this
turkey distribution program, attributing its success to the
continued dedication and generosity of numerous volunteers and sponsors, says Kaganzev, We remain a grassroots organization, run by volunteers.
After developing their initial plan, Kaganzev and
Plevins sought sponsorships. Plevins states, "As we created the program's blueprint, we secured sponsorships. We
began with Maria Bottino, a fabulous supporter who
owns three local ShopRite supermarkets."

Its sort of like the old adage that an infinite number of monkeys at an infinite number of typewriters will eventually recreate
the works of Shakespeare. That may very
well be, but the fact is that most of what
the monkeys would turn out would be pretty much what you get every day on the
sports talk, talk radio and PBS stations.
So, I was pleasantly surprised when I
discovered that I actually enjoyed listening
to my grandchildren singing along with
modern-day pop tunes, even if I didnt
know the words and couldnt join in.
Then, one day I was riding with a buddy
to the Bridgeton Amish Market and he was
listening to our local oldies station, WVLT
92.1 FM. I remarked to my friend that the
DJ was playing some pretty good songs.
Although I didn't sing alongas I didn't
want to get dumped on the side of the
roadI did make a little mental note and
now my radio is set to 92.1 FM and if youre
ina car riding beside me these days you
will likely hear me singing along.
Turns out (unlike my grandchildren), I
dont know all the words to all the songs,
but the beauty of my generations music is
that it wasnt very complicatedplus it had
a good beat and you could dance to it.
Smart grandchildren make for smart
grandparentsif we only listen.
****
Speaking of grandchildren: I wrote a
couple of weeks ago about the stress and
strain of the holidays and how I hate getting caught up in the gift-giving thing. My
seven grandchildren (ages seven to 12) are
just getting into the computer thing. Each
one has their own little mobile device
loaded up with games.
For Christmas, they want gift cards to
computer stores so they can pick their own
games and apps. I dont want to be a part of
that, so I decided to gift my grandkids with
family memberships to the YMCA.
I split the cost with another grandparent
and it actually left me enough money to buy
each of them another little personal gift.
Although I can no longer realistically
play baseball, basketball or soccer with
them, I can take them to the Y and swim
or ride the stationary bike while they do
the fun stuff.
I know the world has changed and is
still in flux, but I also remember the best
times always involve doing something. I

Dennys of Vineland has created the Feather for a Friend program with all
proceeds going to provide a Thanksgiving Dinner on Wednesday, November 25.
The proceeds of the Feather Purchase by the community will assist us in feeding at least 50 families of the Family Promise of Cumberland County
Organization. Rock of Salvation Church in Vineland, NJ has offered their space
to host the Dennys 1st Annual Feather for a Friend Dinner.
Manager at Dennys Kyle Stockdale explained that the Dennys Family
wants to extend a friendly hand at a time of the year when we are most thankful to those who could use a neighborly gesture. This is a way for our community to give back to those in Cumberland County who need it the most.
How can you help? Stop by Dennys at 1001 W. Landis Avenue between now
and November 24 and purchase a Feather for Five or Ten Dollars, write what or
who you are thankful for on the Feather and they will post it at their Dennys to
share your blessings.
If you have questions or need more information, call Kyle Stockdale,
Dennys Vineland manager at 856-696-1900 or visit Dennys to purchase your
