How the Endocrine System Works

The Endocrine System is a collection of eight glands. Each gland

has its own job. The eight glands are the pituitary gland, the
thyroid gland, the adrenal gland, pineal, pancreas, thymus,
parathyroid and ovaries in women and testes in men.
Each of these glands secretes about 30 hormones. The pituitary
gland sends hormones to your cells. This makes the cells split
which helps you grow. The pituitary gland also sends a hormone
called gonadotropin around your body. This hormone is sent to
the ovaries in woman. Then the ovaries send another hormone
called estrogen. This hormone is then sent through your
bloodstream to a target cell. This hormone helps with breast
development, body shape changes and menstruation (period).
Men go through a similar process. The pituitary gland also sends
out a hormone called gonadotropin to the testes. Then the testes
secrete another hormone called testosterone to different parts of
your body. This hormone develops pubic and facial hair; an
increase muscle mass and deepens voice.
The endocrine system is a very important part of puberty.
Because the glands secrete hormones to tell your whole body
what to do through puberty.
