SPY GAMES
The last few weeks have certainly been busy for those charged with countering Russias increasing spy operations across the globe. From the southern most points of Africa to the Arctic Circle,
Russias spy and military organisations have not been this busy since the Berlin Wall came down.
However, their focus is undoubtedly Europe, and quite worryingly, President Putin has already
said he would never rule out the nuclear option. Banter... hot air? Perhaps, but his saber rattling
is worrying senior intel and defence heads. Indeed, recently retired MI6 Chief Sir John Sawers, spoke of a torrid
time ahead - if events go unchecked and diplomatic efforts are not enabled to get both sides talking again. This
edition contains several features on the spy games between NATO aligned nations and Russia.
In the Middle East and Africa, terrorists continue to commit crimes against humanity on a scale not seen since
WWII. In Tunisia, a couple of al-Qaida gunmen shot dead 20 tourists at the Bardo Museum, whilst in Kenya, half a
dozen Al-Shabaab suicide operatives decided it was fun to slaughter nearly 150 students at Garissa University
College.
Government forces have had some success against terrorist groups in the Middle East. Iraqi forces removed ISIS
from the important city of Tikrit and are now looking to squeeze the group out of the country. When this happens
the focus will be on the complex minefield that is Syria. Good luck to those officials, ministers and intel and defence
people who will endeavour to find a solution here.
Negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme in Switzerland appear to have concluded; an agreement of sorts
has been reached. President Obama hailed the talks, but in Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the
outcome has gifted the bomb to Iran. As a sideshow to
the protracted talks, stories emerged that Israel had
eavesdropped on the meetings. US officials were
outraged that once again Israel, an ally, had spied on
America. Israel denied the charge saying it has external
sources. It later emerged that the CIA had uncovered
the spy operation through US intercepts of foreign
communications traffic! Some almost certainly sent to
Israel! If the situation wasnt so serious, and the stakes
so high, one could almost raise a smile.
