Graduation Thesis Title : Surface Acoustic Wave on (001) plane of cubic homogeneous elastic half space .
Synopsis : The expression of velocity of surface wave in term of elastic constant of cubic material is
unknown. To solve the problem a general propagation direction is taken on (001) plane of cubic crystal.
To satisfy the null stress on (001) , surface wave is considered as linear combination of three partial wave .
Each partial wave decay exponentially with depth . The wave propagation equation is written for each
component of displacement for the case of no body forces . Thus three homogeneous equation form wave
propagation in three orthogonal direction for displacement due to surface wave is obtained. The non trivial
solution of three homogeneous equation gives three root of decay constant corresponding to three partial
wave in term of assumed velocity of surface wave. The linear combination of three partial wave should
satisfy the null stress on (001) surface . The one normal component of stress and two shear component of
stress gives three addition equation for factor of linear combination. Thus cubic equation of wave velocity is
obtained in term of direction of propagation and elastic constant of cubic crystal. This equation is solved by
a matlab program using numerical iterative procedure since direct solution of cubic equation was not
possible due to complex mathematical expressions.
