Pune District is situated in the state of Maharashtra, South India with Pune City as its
Headquarter. Pune City is located at 560 m above sea level on the western margin of the
Deccan plateau.
It is situated on the leeward side of the Sahyadri mountain range (the Western Ghats), which
separates it from the Arabian Sea. It is a relatively hilly city, with its tallest hill, Vetal Hill, rising
to 800 m above sea level. Just outside the city, the Sinhagad fort is located at a height of 1300
m.
Central Pune is located on the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers.
Pune lies very close to the seismically active zone around Koyna Dam, about 100 km south of
the city, and has been rated in Zone 4 (on a scale of 2 to 5, with 5 being the most prone to
earthquakes) by the India Meteorological Department. Pune has experienced some moderateintensity and many low-intensity earthquakes in its history.
Pune district forms a part of the tropical monsoon land and therefore shows a significant
seasonal variation in temperature as well as rainfall conditions. Climate of the western region of
Pune is cool whereas the eastern part is hot and dry.
Pune experiences three distinct seasons: summer,
monsoon and winter.

maximum temperatures ranging from 30 to 38 C.

hottest months, the nights are usually cool due to Pune's high altitude. The highest
temperature ever recorded was 43.3 C on April 30, 1897.
The monsoon lasts from June to October, with moderate rainfall and temperatures ranging
from 10 to 28 C. Most of the 722 mm (28.4 inches) of annual rain fall in the city fall between
June and September, and July is the wettest month of the year.
Winter begins in November; November in particular is referred to as the Rosy Cold (literal
translation). The daytime temperature hovers around 28 C while night temperature is below
10 C for most of December and January, often dropping to 5 to 6 C.
The population of Pune is 94.26 Lakh (2011). 87.19% of the total population in Pune is literate.
Pune demographics have revealed that the number of male literates is 92.72% and of female
literates is 81.13%.
As one of the largest cities in India, and as a result of its many colleges and universities, Pune is
emerging as a prominent location for IT and manufacturing companies to expand. Pune has the
sixth largest metropolitan economy and the highest per capita income in the country.
The automotive sector is prominent in Pune. All sectors of the automotive industry are
represented, from two-wheelers and auto rickshaws to cars, tractors, excavators and trucks.
The Hinjewadi IT Park (officially called as the Rajeev Gandhi IT Park), is a project undertaken by
MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) to promote the IT sector in Pune.
When completed, the Hinjewadi IT Park is expected to have an area of about 2800 acres. To
facilitate economic growth, the government made liberal incentives in its IT and ITES Policy,
2003 and leased properties based on MIDC land. The IT sector employs more than 70,000
people.
Pune is said to be the cultural capital of the state of Maharashtra. It epitomizes the Marathi
culture, which lays emphasis on education, arts and crafts, music and theatre. Pune culture
reflects a blend of traditions with modernity, as along with hosting classical shows, the city also
boasts of an active nightlife.
Pune is the birthplace of the great poet-saint, Tukaram. At the same time, the city claims the
honor of being the home of great freedom fighters like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna
Gokhale, etc. The culture of Pune is well reflected through its cuisine, people and languages.
The Constitution of India has stipulated the usage of Hindi and English to be the two languages
of communication for the Central (Federal) government. In Pune the majority of people speak
Marathi. Hindi is the next important language commonly used and the educated class and the
young college goers communicate mostly in English.
People belonging to varied religious backgrounds are living in Pune, making it an assortment of
sorts. One of the major religions followed in the city is Hinduism. Pune city also serves as home
to people belonging to other religions, like Sikhs, Christians and Muslims. Even though their
number is not too large, they form a significant minority of the total population. The other
religions practiced in Pune comprise of Buddhism, Jainism and Zoroastrianism.
The local cuisines of Pune retain the typical taste of coconut and garlic. At the same time, a
large amount of green chilies are used, making the dishes quite spicy. The main course in the
traditional food of Poona comprises of a number of food items made up of jowar and bajra
(corn). Do not forget to taste the sweet specialties of the city!

The city of Pune has acquired a cosmopolitan identity. People belonging to different castes,
creeds, religions and economic backgrounds can be found here. As the setting up of software
companies and professional institutions in Pune attracts people from all over the world, the city
has assumed a multi-ethnic personality. The people of Pune represent an amalgamation of
different cultures and the city has become like a mixture of different civilizations.
One thing that is common to all the people living in Pune is their never-say-die-spirit. Whatever
be their educational background, their economic background or their religion, they know how
to live life to the fullest. Each and every person has found a way to enjoy himself/herself and
the city also caters to the needs of everyone.
The people of Pune are also very much interested in the arts and crafts, music, spirituality, etc.
The past few years have seen the city acquiring a taste in trance and techno also.
