Emerging Artist

High School Exhibit

The Emerging Artist High School exhibit and awards

ceremony was held in Columbus at the STRS building
on Saturday, October 11, 2015. The exhibit was inspiring. The talents of the best high school artists in the
state whose work was exhibited are impressive. About
150 students, parents/relatives and teachers attended
the awards ceremony. The guest speaker was OAEA
President Laura Tawill. Laura's speech to those attending was encouraging and appreciative of the high quality of works exhibited and the necessary commitment made by student, family and teacher to succeed
at such a high level. Laura praised all in
attendance and challenged them to continue
to create and be a maker of things. Hats off
to Jennifer Thompson and Pamela Palmarini, OAEA High School Exhibition cochairs and Dawn Norris, OAEA Exhibition
Coordinator for their efforts in making the
2015 Emerging Artist Exhibit a huge success.

OCTOBER 2015

Greetings From Our Regional Director

Dear Western Region Members,
I cannot believe that Fall is here, which means that the OAEA Conference is just around the corner. I
hope that most of you are planning on attending. I always enjoy the conferences, especially when our region is the
host. Our local committee has been very busy planning what promises to be an amazing event. I am sure that by
now you have had time to go through each daily schedule and highlight all of the workshops and speakers that interest you. There is definitely something for everyone. Please help us celebrate two of our own members as they
are acknowledged for their dedication to Art Education. Lindsay Gustafason will receive the West Region's Outstanding Art Teacher Award for 2015. Megan Krieger Newton has been chosen to receive the Middle/Junior High
School Division Award. Congratulations to both of these extremely hard working, devoted Art Teachers.
Rebecca Molnar
I am also excited about seeing familiar faces, as well as meeting new members at our Regional Meeting
scheduled the Friday of Conference, at the Dayton Convention Center in room 106, 12:00 until 1:30. Lunch will be served. Our tradition of an evening get together with members from the West Region will continue. The details of that get together will be announced at
our Regional Luncheon Meeting!
What to pack? Please pack ideas for Award Nominees. We will nominate two candidates this year for Outstanding Art Teacher. We will need to nominate a Distinguished Business in support of Art Education, a Distinguished Educator in support of Art Education, and a Distinguished Citizen in support of Art Education. We may also nominate candidates to receive a Division Award. When
thinking of a candidate to nominate for a Division Award, you might want to look over the rubric found on the OAEA website. It will
help you with your selection. Nominations for Art Educator of the Year are also welcome. This year the Awards Process has a new
twist. Instead of the Regional Director turning in copies of the nominations forms at the RD Meeting, forms are to be completed online
by the end of the conference. The awards that are not voted on by us at our meeting, such as Educator of the Year and the Division
Awards, may be completed online prior to the conference. The remaining award nominations will be entered online after voting at our
regional meeting. Thank you in advance.
Also, WOAEA has two Board positions that need to be filled. Our Summer Exhibits Co Chairs, Mary Baine and Melissa
Clark have both decided that it is time to step down from their positions. They have done an amazing job of showcasing our students'
artwork each summer for quite a few years. I cannot thank them enough for their countless hours of dedication to our region. Sadly, my
term as Regional Director is coming to an end in January. Our Regional Director Elect, Darden Bradshaw will become the new Regional Director. We need to elect a new Regional Director Elect. Please consider volunteering your time to such a worthwhile organization.
As I mentioned earlier, my term is coming to a close. My job as Regional Director has been made easy due to my fabulous
Board. Each and every member has gone above and beyond my call. I am extremely grateful. I have enjoyed my term. You will not
get rid of me quite yet. I will now become the Workshop Chair for our region. I would appreciate any and all suggestions you might
have for workshops. Again, thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Molnar,
Regional Director

Western Region Summer Show

Another outstanding Western Region Summer Student Art Exhibition was on display
at the University of Dayton ArtStreet last
summer. Following installation by several
Art Street, UD
volunteers on June 15, the show was officially
open to the public from June 16 through June 26. On Saturday, June 27, two receptions were held. Regional Director
Becky Molnar maintained the refreshment table and introduced the summer co-chairs. Both receptions were well attended by art teachers,
students, and supportive
families. This year, the
co-chairs broke with
tradition and stored the
two-dimensional work
for display at OAEA
Conference in Dayton.

Rules for submitting artwork to the YAM and YPAE exhibitions

Matting Requirements:
1. All works must be matted with a good quality mat board or pebble board. Do not use thin papers or
poster board for matting.
2. Minimum mat width is to be 3 inches all the way around. This helps to accommodate the labels that
we need to put on the art. Relief work must be matted and may not be more than 2 inches in depth.
3. Maximum OUTSIDE EDGE mat size is 24 X 30 inches.
4. YAM show will accept 3-D works only if it is clearly marked and ready to be displayed.
5. All work is to be backed with foam core board or double thickness cardboard to prevent
warping during shrink-wrapping.
6. The backing needs to touch the edges of the matte board due to the shrink wrapping. If the backing
does not meet the ends of the matte board then it buckles due to the shrink wrapping.
7. Do not frame the artworks. No framed entries will be accepted.
Identification of Pieces:
1. Each artwork must have an entry form neatly and legibly completed and taped to the back of the
piece.
2. Attach the top half of entry form to back of art with top. LEAVE BOTTOM HALF HANGING
FREELY.
3. Mark the TOP of the artwork by writing TOP. This ensures that it will be displayed properly.
4. Include your name, region, school and students name on the back of the artwork, incase the form
falls off or is damaged.
Other Info:
1. Any work that can smear and cause damage to other mats needs to be sprayed and wrapped in
newsprint, etc for transport.
2. Work should be from only one student, no group entries.
3. Works may be rejected at the state level because of messy mats, etc. Art teachers may receive a bill if
submitted work has to be re-matted.
4. Students whose work is selected for the show will be mailed a congratulations letter, info and
invitation for the recognition ceremony. The students teacher will also be notified via letter to
attend.
5. The reception for both YAM and YPAE is in late March. The reception date and times will be in the
letters to students and teachers which are usually mailed in mid-February.
