Abatement of pollution to river Musi

Musi River flows through midst of the Hyderabad City
bifurcating city as South of Musi and North of Musi.
The entire sewage flows to River Musi through
various open nalas from South & North parts.
To contain such dry weather flows in the nalas and in
the Musi River, the Ministry of Environment & Forests,
GoI, has approved a project under National River
Conservation Plan of NRCD for laying suitable
Conveying Mains, construction of Interception &
Diversion Structures on Nalas and Sewage Treatment
Plants for treatment and disposal of sewage.

iv) Attaupr 51 Mld

The sewage is treated to river disposable standards and being let into
river musi, thereby improvement in the river hydrology and environs

The sewage entering into musi through 16 open nalas have been
intercepted and being conveyed to the STP of respective catchment's
area.

Trunk conveying mains of 1200 mm - 2000 mm dia have been laid for the
above purpose

Improved sanitation facility through Phase-I is achieved to the citizens of

Hyderabad, thereby maintaining hygienic conditions in the habitation and
improved hydrology in the river

PROPOSED
NRCD PROJECT PHASE-II
(Abatement of Pollution of River Musi)

41

NRCD Project Ph-II

At the time of preparation of first project proposals, the dry

weather flows in the project area was considered for 363.3
Sqkm drainage basin area i.e. the area of erstwhile MCH for
the flows of 2005 horizon year for 592 Mld.

Due to rapid urbanization, further water supply source

augmentation was implemented to meet the water supply
demands of Hyderabad City.

Resulting additional sewage flows are being generated in

Musi catchment area requiring additional conveying mains and
treatment facilities.

Accordingly, as per the guidance of MoEF, GoI, the HMWSSB

prepared and submitted the Detailed Project Report for Ph-II
project under NRCD.
42

SALIENT FEATURES - NRCD PROJECT Ph-II

Total catchment basin area considered under the project is 574.59
Sqkm covering the entire GHMC area draining to Musi river. (MCH
was expanded as GHMC)
The project area on South of Musi is - 158.43 Sqkm i.e. 27.56%
The project area on North of Musi is - 416.11 Sqkm i.e. 72.44%
As per the population projections, the expected sewage flow:
For South of Musi
2024 412 Mld
- 2044 503 Mld
For North of Musi

2024 - 2044 -

926 Mld
1324 Mld

43

The length of the river considered for pollution

prevention is 28 Km under this project as against
the earlier length of 14 Km in the first project.
Now the quantity of sewage flows considered for
the treatment is 610 Mld in addition to the 592 Mld
taken up in the first project and 120 Mld capacity
smaller STPs taken up by HMDA under the Lake
Conservation programme.

44

Construction of STPs.
Laying conveying mains to STPs.
Construction of I&Ds at Nalas to divert the sewage
into conveying mains.

46

Proposals of STPs:
The entire Musi river catchment in the limits of GHMC has been

HMWSSB, constantly making efforts from the inception

to strengthen the sewerage system of Hyderabad City
in order to control the pollution levels caused due to
increased sewage flows generated in Hyderabad city
on account of rapid urbanization.
The measures includes; laying of suitable sewer
collection network consisting laterals, branch mains,
trunk mains and large conveying mains & construction
of STPs for treatment of sewage to the river
disposable standards.

51

On implementation of NRCD Project Phase-I, the

sewage pollution levels in the Musi River have come
down to the significantly with treatment of sewage to
the extent of 650 Mld through various sewage
treatment plants.
Further Improved sanitation facility through NRCD
Phase-II would be achieved to the citizens of
Hyderabad, thereby maintaining hygienic conditions in
the habitation and improved hydrology in the river.
Sewage treated to river disposable standards to be let
into river Musi facilitates further prevention of pollution
in the downstream of Musi river.
