    Roman Haubenstock-Ramati was a Polish-Jewish composer born in 1919 in Krakow who survived the Holocaust by fleeing Poland after the German invasion in 1939. He studied composition in Lemberg under Józef Koffler before eventually settling in Vienna in 1957 where he worked as a music editor for Universal Edition and later taught composition at the Vienna Academy of Music. Haubenstock-Ramati pioneered the development of new forms of musical notation and graphic scores in addition to his compositions which incorporated 12-tone techniques. He received the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1981 before passing away in 1994 in Vienna.

    APolishJeworaJewishPole?AftertheGermanfascisttroopsmarchedintoPolandon1September1939,thatrather
    speculativedistinctionwasnolongerofanyimportance:RomanHaubenstockRamatisfamilyhadtoflee.
    BeforetheSovietUnioneventuallyjoinedupwiththeAlliedForces,thecomposerwasarrestedandbanishedanumberoftimes.
    Afterhisabruptrelease,hetriedinvaintojointheFreePolishArmy:hecontractedtyphoidfever.Oneofthefewtorecover,
    HaubenstockRamatireachedPalestineviaTurkmenistan,AfghanistanandIran.
    HereturnedtoKrakowin1947andwassoonappointedtoheadtheradiosmusicdepartment,apositionwhichhekeptuntil
    1950whenhedecidedtosettleintheStateofIsrael,foundedtwoyearsbefore.There,hewasentrustedwithsettingupa
    musiclibrarywhichhethendirected.
    HaubenstockRamatisfirstattemptsatcompositiongobacktohischildhood.Oneofhispieces(writtenundertheinfluenceof
    SzymanowskiandStravinsky)receivedapublicperformanceinKrakowwhenhewaseighteen.
    TheflightfromPolandfirstledhimtoLemberg(nowLvvintheUkraine)wherehejoinedthecompositionclassoftheformer
    SchoenbergpupilJzefKoffler.TherehewasintroducedtotheworldoftheSecondVienneseSchoolanoveltyfortheyoung
    manwhosoonfoundhisbearingsinitandwrotepiecesinthenewidiom,adaptedtohisownneeds.Koffler,executedin
    1943/1944,composedinastricttwelvetoneidiomwhilekeepingtotraditionalformsbutheneverforcedhispupilstoadhereto
    thesamestylistictenets.
    KoffleradmiredWeberneventhoughheheldthatWebernsmusicledtoanimpasse.Onthatpoint,HaubenstockRamati
    disagreedwithhisprofessor:eversincehisfirstencounterwithascorebytheAustriancomposer(stillinKrakow),hehadbeen
    fascinatedandwasreadytobattleitoutwiththeolderman.Ashewastoremember,wewouldfightinaspiritofloveforeach
    other.Foralltheirdisagreements,HaubenstockRamatigraduatedfromtheLembergMusicAcademywithadegree.
    ThemusicthathecomposedinIsraelprovedtobefartooadvanced,performancesfounderedontheinstrumentalistsfailureto
    cometotermswiththescores.Miraculouslyenough,HeinrichStrobelinGermanyheardofHaubenstockRamatisdifficultiesand
    programmedapieceatDonaueschingenin1954.Thesuccessoftheworldpremiereledtocommissions:theharpsichord
    concertoRecitativoedariawascomposedinthesameyearPapagenosPocketSizeConcertoforglockenspieland
    orchestrawasincludedintheDivertimentofrMozartcommissionedbyStrobelfromtwelvecomposerstomarkto200th
    anniversaryofthecomposersbirthin1956.
    BothworkscametobepublishedbyUniversalEdition,thankstoameetingwithAlfredSchlee,thepublishersdirector.Italso
    resultedinHaubenstockRamatisjoiningtheUEstaff.

    Lifebegananewforthecomposerandhisfamily:theyleftIsraelin1957andsettledinVienna.AtUE,hewasappointedmusic
    editorbuthealsocastacriticaleyeonpublishingprojectsandputforwardnewnotationalideaswhichwerethenduly
    implemented.
    Between1973and1989,HaubenstockRamatiactedasProfessorofCompositionattheViennaAcademyofMusiconeofhis
    pupilstherewasBeatFurrer.
    Similarlytoanumberofothercomposers,HaubenstockRamatiwasalsoatalentedgraphicartist.Inadditiontoworkswhich
    haveconsiderableartisticmerit,someofhisscoresthoughmeantforperformancealsohaveadefiniteaestheticvalue.His
    picturesandhisscoreswereexhibitedanumberoftimesandhehimselforganisedanexhibitionofscoreswithgraphicnotation
    atDonaueschingen.
    LotharKnesslhasprovidedthefollowingportraitofRomanHaubenstockRamati:
    RHRbecameaquietmanandstayedthatway.Hewasunassumingandsowerehismusicandhispictures.Itwasareserved
    andendearingdiscreetness,acoolnesstingedwithwarmth.Hekeptalooffromtheglitterofpubliclifeonereasonmoreto
    ensurethathisnameandhisworkarekeptalive.

    RomanHaubenstockRamatiwasbornon27February1919inKrakowwherehestudiedmusicologyandphilosophyaswellas
    compositionwithArturMalawskiandtookprivatelessonswithJsefKofflerinLemberg.
    19471950headofthemusicdepartmentoftheKrakowRadio
    19501956directoroftheStateMusicLibraryofTelAvivandprofessorattheMusicAcademy
    1957returntoEurope,workedattheStudiodeMusiqueConcrteinPariswherehedrewinspirationfromOlivierMessiaen.Then
    workedaseditorandmusicconsultantofUniversalEditionViennapermanentresidenceinVienna.VisitingprofessorinBuenos
    Aires,StockholmandattheYaleUniversity.
    1973to1989heacceptedanappointmenttotheWienerHochschulefrMusikunddarstellendeKunstasprofessorof
    composition.InadditiontocompositionHaubenstockRamatifocusedonthedevelopmentofnewformsofnotationandmusical
    graphic.
    In1959heorganisedthefirstexhibitionofMusicalGraphicinDonaueschingen.
    In1981hewasawardedtheGrandAustrianStatePrize.
    Hediedon3March1994inVienna,aweekafterthegalaconcertinhonourofhis75thbirthdayattheWienerKonzerthaus.
