Senior Transcriber
Purpose:
To transcribe all recordings of sittings of the House, committee and ad hoc meetings.
Key Performance Areas
To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the record, such that they can be used as a reliable,
accurate record in political debate or in legal proceedings;
To ensure that no words or phrases are inserted or omitted which would change the meaning
of what was said;
When required to assist with recording, prepare, setup and test recording equipment;
General
Incumbents are required to work until the end of each House sitting.

Audio typing skills; ability to type transcripts accurately at a speed of 90 words per minute;
Excellent language skills with particular reference to written communication skills in isiXhosaEnglish.
A functional knowledge of one or more of the other official languages will be an added
advantage;
Computer Literate;
Ability to recognise and correct incorrect grammar;
Total proficiency in the use of transcribing equipment;
Ability to concentrate for long hours, self-discipline to remain focused on the task at hand,
despite the disruptions in the work environment;
Ability to work in a methodical manner, dealing with issues in an organised and logical manner
Awareness and wide general knowledge of current affairs, keeping oneself abreast of
developments all over the world;
Coping with different and/or difficult accents and pronunciations;
Know how and when it becomes necessary to find foreign words, i.e. Latin/French phrases;
etc.
Excellent planning and organisational skills; and
Sound interpersonal relations skills.
Qualifications/Experience:
Grade 12
One - two years certificate in Secretarial Training or related field
Minimum of 2 to 3 years' experience as an audio-typist or transcriber
Ability to type at least 90 wpm with extremely high level of accuracy; and
Excellent isiXhosa-English language skills, equivalent to first language and second
language levels where applicable.
