Institutions
Time Inc (IPC Media)
1800s-1900s
The Field was launched in 1853, became biggest newspaper in
Europe.
Time Inc UK (Known as IPC Media at the time)
released 8 other titles; Country Life, Horse & Hound, Shooting
Times, Yachting World, Amateur Gardening, Cycling Weekly,
Amateur Photographer and The Railway Magazine. These
magazines were directed at white males who had a disposable
income (the exception being Amateur Gardening which would
suit a more female audience). Time IPC would be a great
publisher for my magazine as they know how to promote
magazines. They promoted their magazines with prize offers of
1 a week for life (which was a lot of money back then),
therefore increasing exposure to the target audience and other
people.
1920s-1940s
1920s
Created magazines for the home interest and womens market.
Odhams launched a new monthly magazine titled Ideal Home
to oppose Newnes Homes & Gardens Time Inc (IPC) would be
a good publisher for me as they are willing to make risks by
branching out into other markets they were new at the time
and they might take a risk for my music magazine.
1930s
Womans Own was released in 1932 and is one of Time Incs
(IPCs) traditional Big Two It was the first magazine ever to
include a free gift-3 skeins of wool with every copy. They were
branching out into more woman only magazines as well as
publishing their own male magazines too. Time Inc (IPC) would
be a good publisher for me as they have a lot of experience in

the magazine business as well as being the company to have a

full colour magazine and to include a free gift with their
magazine

The 1940s
A key role for IPCs Womens Weeklies was to keep the morale
of Britains woman up and to provide Britain with important
information. They were designed to get women helping with
war effort. These were created by men for women while the
men were off at war fighting in World War 2.
1950s
The rise of music give birth to the New Musical Express, Time
Incs (IPCs) first gender neutral magazine- a magazine for both
genders. To was the first magazine to feature an official UK
record chart. This shows that Time Inc (IPC) would a good
publisher for me as they have created a successful music
magazine and they can help me make my music magazine
successful. After the arrival of ITV, TV Times was created and it
listed all the programs on the TV for each week. TV Times was
acquired by Time Inc (IPC) in 1989.
1960s
The formation of the International Publishing Corporation
happened in 1963 and brought 3 rival magazine companies
Newnes, Fleetway and Odhams Press together. 1969 saw the
creation of football weekly Shoot! Created to capitalise on
Englands world cup victory. This shows that they are willing to
capitalise on certain trends when they become popular. Time
Inc (IPC) may be the publishing company for me as music is
becoming more and more popular, especially rock music
breaking into the mainstream and they will be able to help me
capitalise on any music trend.

Other ICP titles were created in the Swinging Sixies including

Rugby World, World Soccer, Anglers Mail and Family Circle,
which was their first family magazine.
1970s
The Reed Group acquires IPC in 1970 to form the giant global
corporation, Reed International. Successful 1970s magazine
launches included Aeroplane Monthly, Sporting Gun and Super
Bike, all of which are male oriented magazines.

1980s-2000s
1980s
IPC announces the formation of European Magazine Ltd, a joint
venture company with Groupe. IPC embarks upon on the
biggest marketing campaign in its history, spearheaded by 21
of its editors- the first ad features 4 of Most Influential Peoplethe editors of the womens weeklies. The launch issue of
Essentials is a sell-out and after just 6 issues launches in France
as Advantages. This shows that IPC are very good at
advertising and they may be the publishing company for me as
they will be able to use their advertising skills to promote my
magazine and make it successful. New IPC titles including 4X4,
Eventing, Chat, Mizz, Motor Caravan Magazine, Wedding &
Home, Country Homes & Interiors, Classic Boat, Model
Collector, Motor Boats Monthly, Practical Parenting, Volksworld
and Bird Keeper. This shows that IPC were branching out into
creating magazines for all genders and ages
1990s
Whats On TV launches in 1991, it goes on to be the UKs bestselling magazine, a position it still owns today. Revolutionary
lads title explodes onto the scene and is hailed as the
outstanding launch of recent years and opened up the whole
young mens market. The womens market also gained a few
new editions, with ICP acquiring Here! From Gruner & Jahr and

merging it into Now! ,launched in 1996. NME becomes the UKs

first music magazine title to get its own website; this website
would become Europes most popular music website. This
shows that IPC were ahead of their time and were willing to
change and try different things (e.g. creating a website). ICP
may be the publishing company for me as they would be willing
to help me try something different for my magazine if I wanted
to.
2000s
IPC Magazines is renamed IPC Media in 2000. Ignite! launches
Nuts-the worlds first mens only weekly magazine. Backed by a
8 million marketing investment, the biggest launch in ICPs
history. They unveil the new generation of Real Life weekly for
women- Pick Me Up in January 2005. The launch is backed by a
6 million marketing investment.
Other marketing investments include a 10 million marketing
investment in Britains first compact paid-for TV listings and a
18 million marketing investment in the UKs first glossy high
street fashion and celebrity style weekly magazine, LOOK. IPC
may be the publishing company for me as they took
monumental risks with investing so much money into products
that may not be successful, so they might take a risk with my
music magazine.
2010s
In January 2010, IPC restructured around 3 key audience
groups: men, mass market women and up market women and
launches 2 new monthly magazines- Style at Home and
goodtoknow Recipes. They also launch a gaming magazineFeelgood Games- targeting mass market mums with the very
best games and rewarding them with real gifts. In September
2014, IPOC Media was renamed Time Inc Ltd. IPC may be the
publishing company for me as they know which markets they
are strongest in (Men, Mass Market Women and Up Market
Women) and they know how to appeal to the market of a

modern age (focusing on gaming and winning real prizes) so

they could me to focus on a certain market and make my
magazine appeal to the modern audience.

Bauer Publishing/Media Group
1980s
The Bauer Media Group entered the UK scene with Bella
magazine in 1987 it Introduced a new format of magazine that
mixed previously unseen real life editorial and exciting service
features. Empire was launched in 1989 and is a monthly film
magazine that is still successful to this day. This shows that
Bauer was confident enough to take a huge risk by creating a
style which had not been used before. Bauer may be a good
alternative publisher as they would be willing to take a huge
risk on my magazine if I wanted to try something that has not
been done before.

1990s
1990 saw the launch of women title Take A Break. This title
became massively successful due to its unique blend of
competitions and upfront real life stories and it is still the
market leader, selling 800,000 copies each week. Bauer
launched several other titles over the years. TV Quick in 1991,
thats life in 1995 and TV Choice in 1999. They also released
23 successful puzzle titles.
2000s

At the beginning of 2008, Bauer acquired Emaps Radio and

Consumer Magazine divisions and changed the name of these
new businesses to Bauer Media.
With the recent addition of the former Emap Consumer Media
titles, Bauer is now the largest consumer magazine publishing
company in the UK, being successful with titles in the Womens
Weeklies, Womens Interest, Womens Lifestyle, TV Listings,
Puzzles, Mens Lifestyle, Music & Film and Specialist magazine
markets. This shows that Bauer have been very successful in
space a couple of decades while it took IPC Media almost 100
years to become successful, Bauer may be the alternative
publishing company for me as they been just as successful as
IPC Media, and done it in shorter space of time. This shows that
not only are they efficient and effective but that they know the
magazine market well and how to create a successful
magazine.
Bauer are also the main publishers of highly successful music
magazines KERRANG! and Q. This makes Bauer the ideal
alternative publisher as I am creating a music magazine and
they have had experience in creating and publishing music
magazines both of which have become massively successful
and are possibly the most successful music magazines in the
world. With their track record of successful magazines releases
and their experience with creating successful magazines for a
wide range of target audiences, I am certain that Bauer would
be able to publish my music magazine and make it very
successful.
