Time Inc (IPC Media)
1800s-1900s
The Field was launched in 1853, became biggest newspaper in
Europe.
Time Inc UK (Known as IPC Media at the time)
released 8 other titles; Country Life, Horse & Hound, Shooting
Times, Yachting World, Amateur Gardening, Cycling Weekly,
Amateur Photographer and The Railway Magazine. These
magazines were directed at white males who had a disposable
income (the exception being Amateur Gardening which would
suit a more female audience). Time IPC would be a great
publisher for my magazine as they know how to promote
magazines. They promoted their magazines with prize offers of
1 a week for life (which was a lot of money back then),
therefore increasing exposure to the target audience and other
people.
1920s-1940s
1920s
Created magazines for the home interest and womens market.
Odhams launched a new monthly magazine titled Ideal Home
to oppose Newnes Homes & Gardens Time Inc (IPC) would be
a good publisher for me as they are willing to make risks by
branching out into other markets they were new at the time
and they might take a risk for my music magazine.
1930s
Womans Own was released in 1932 and is one of Time Incs
(IPCs) traditional Big Two It was the first magazine ever to
include a free gift-3 skeins of wool with every copy. They were
branching out into more woman only magazines as well as
publishing their own male magazines too. Time Inc (IPC) would
be a good publisher for me as they have a lot of experience in
The 1940s
A key role for IPCs Womens Weeklies was to keep the morale
of Britains woman up and to provide Britain with important
information. They were designed to get women helping with
war effort. These were created by men for women while the
men were off at war fighting in World War 2.
1950s
The rise of music give birth to the New Musical Express, Time
Incs (IPCs) first gender neutral magazine- a magazine for both
genders. To was the first magazine to feature an official UK
record chart. This shows that Time Inc (IPC) would a good
publisher for me as they have created a successful music
magazine and they can help me make my music magazine
successful. After the arrival of ITV, TV Times was created and it
listed all the programs on the TV for each week. TV Times was
acquired by Time Inc (IPC) in 1989.
1960s
The formation of the International Publishing Corporation
happened in 1963 and brought 3 rival magazine companies
Newnes, Fleetway and Odhams Press together. 1969 saw the
creation of football weekly Shoot! Created to capitalise on
Englands world cup victory. This shows that they are willing to
capitalise on certain trends when they become popular. Time
Inc (IPC) may be the publishing company for me as music is
becoming more and more popular, especially rock music
breaking into the mainstream and they will be able to help me
capitalise on any music trend.
1980s-2000s
1980s
IPC announces the formation of European Magazine Ltd, a joint
venture company with Groupe. IPC embarks upon on the
biggest marketing campaign in its history, spearheaded by 21
of its editors- the first ad features 4 of Most Influential Peoplethe editors of the womens weeklies. The launch issue of
Essentials is a sell-out and after just 6 issues launches in France
as Advantages. This shows that IPC are very good at
advertising and they may be the publishing company for me as
they will be able to use their advertising skills to promote my
magazine and make it successful. New IPC titles including 4X4,
Eventing, Chat, Mizz, Motor Caravan Magazine, Wedding &
Home, Country Homes & Interiors, Classic Boat, Model
Collector, Motor Boats Monthly, Practical Parenting, Volksworld
and Bird Keeper. This shows that IPC were branching out into
creating magazines for all genders and ages
1990s
Whats On TV launches in 1991, it goes on to be the UKs bestselling magazine, a position it still owns today. Revolutionary
lads title explodes onto the scene and is hailed as the
outstanding launch of recent years and opened up the whole
young mens market. The womens market also gained a few
new editions, with ICP acquiring Here! From Gruner & Jahr and
1990s

became massively successful due to its unique blend of
competitions and upfront real life stories and it is still the
market leader, selling 800,000 copies each week. Bauer
