b) ESSAY
ICT application have become an important part of teaching and learning. The Ministry of
Education has invested a huge effort in terms of funding and training to equip teachers and
students with ICT skills. In your opinion, what are the issues and challenges in integrating
ICT in teaching and learning in our Malaysian Schools.
Give your idea to this issues in not more than 500 words (by group)

Nowadays, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a necessity in

our life mostly in 21st century. ICT is powered by technologies and brings significant to the
education worldwide including Malaysia. Smart School is introduced as one of education
system that reconstruct systematically teaching-learning and school management in order to
prepared children for information age. It is one over seven flagship of Multimedia Super
Corridor (MSC) carry out in 2000. A huge effort in terms of funding and training to equip
teachers and students with ICT skills had invested by The Ministry of Education as
technology is the important component in Smart School. Several issues that related to
teaching and learning using ICT at Malaysian schools are Teaching Science and
Mathematics in English (PPSMI), Smart School, Notebook 1Malaysia and Multimedia Super
Corridor (MSC).
The issues have been raised regarding the implementation of ICT in teaching and
learning in our Malaysians school is some teachers are not interested using ICT. Issue
mostly come from the veteran teachers that like to teach students using the traditional ways
means using marker and white board and students write their notes. Learning time save
using the ICT, with such left time student be able to search more information about the topic
through the internet and ask their teachers anything related to the subject. Some teachers
think using the ICT is difficult and not suitable to their age as they have to remember all the
steps in the process of installed it during the learning. If this issue continuously in the future,
it is big detriment for government if it is not use wisely.
Despite of all challenges to integrate teaching using ICT, school management also
plays crucial role to enhance Malaysias target in linking learning process with ICT. Firstly
schools build up computer lab to accessing internet unfortunately, prepared computers are
lacking to support large number of students. Students must share the computer with two, or
perhaps more to use one computer. This is not practical to proceed the learning process.
Other than that most terrible part is, a few of computers that are not functioning without

taking any action to repair them. Thus management has to be improved to expose students
with ICT.
Furthermore, less budget to apply ICT in school education related to high cost in
purchasing the software, having seminar to train represent teachers from schools and to pay
the maintenance of ICT system. Because of cost to purchase the software is very high not all
schools can use the software. In order to use ICT Ministry of Education has to prepare a
seminar to train teachers all over schools to acquire ICT skill. High cost will be used to make
this happens. Then, cost for system maintenance also is expensive. From this challenge,
financial support should be in stable condition for education development.
To sum up all these, challenges of teaching using ICT have to be overcome because
education needs ICT. Government and school administration should play serious part in this
issue. Students must get exposed with ICT as it is crucial element to develop country in this
century. Hoping that next few years all schools will participate in teaching process using ICT
no matter rural schools or urban schools.
