Eagles honor top teacher

Shawnee High School industrial arts teacher and die-hard Philadelphia sports fan
Stefani Kirk recognized, awarded $1,000 donation by Philadelphia Eagles
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Having been going to Philadelphia Eagles games since she was
in fourth grade, and having gotten married on home plate at Citizens Bank Park, its clear that
Shawnee High School teacher
Stefanie Kirk is passionate about
both her profession and her
Philadelphia sports teams.
Needless to say, it was fitting
when she received an award
from the Philadelphia Eagles
that encapsulated both of them.
At each home game this season, the Eagles have recognized
one teacher from the tri-state
area for his or her contributions
to their students, school and surrounding community.
The award is through the Axalta All-Pro Teachers Program,
and the criterion it developed is
based on educational drive, innovation in the classroom and community ownership.
On Sunday, Nov. 15, the Eagles
recognized Kirk at their home
game against the Miami Dolphins.
As part of her recognition,
Kirk received a $1,000 donation to
Shawnee High School, four tickets to the game, a personalized

St. Peters to host Big Band Express Dec. 6

St. Peters Episcopal Church
will present the Big Band Express, South Jerseys premier big
band jazz ensemble, in a free concert on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. at
the church located on 1 Hartford
Road in Medford. A free will offering is requested.
The BBE, a 16-piece group of

retired professional musicians

and music educators, was founded in January 2001 by Medford
saxophonist Tony Femiano and
drummer Leo Roselli. Their specialty is contemporary big band
music with an emphasis on jazz.
The band features the music of
many of the countrys finest com-

posers and arrangers, such as

Sammy Nestico, Dave Wolpe, Tom
Kubis, Count Basie, as well as
arrangements by Femiano and
others.
For this concert, the band will
perform a variety of music, including ballads, up-tempo swing
tunes and Latin jazz.
The members of the band, now
"off the road," are still working
musicians who have performed
with many of the major entertainers and bands of the last 40
years in Atlantic City, New York,
Philadelphia, Las Vegas and elsewhere. Their interest in jazz goes
beyond that of a "sideline" or
"leisure pursuit" and shows a genuine love and passion for this musical idiom.
The members of the band are:
Femiano, alto sax and leader;
Fran Kosienski, alto sax; LenDeFrank, tenor sax; Sal Guiliana,
tenor sax; Mickey Plumeri, baritone sax; trumpets Rick Gazda,
Don Zimmerman, Duke Palladino
and Paul Nagle; trombones Tom

Police provide online protection

All departments should help online buyers and sellers with safe zones

s the holiday shopping season

is now officially underway, police departments across the
country are on high alert. Thats because, at this time of year, unfortunately, criminals are everywhere looking to take advantage of unassuming
shoppers who are just trying to enjoy
the season.
The criminals go out to malls, downtown shopping areas and other retail
hotspots just like the rest of us but
they, instead, are after the goods were
buying, and the cash and cards that
were carrying.
Its scary. And its sad. But its a reality of the world in which we live.
With online shopping as prevalent
as it is, and especially with peer-topeer sites such as Craigslist so com-

monplace, were glad to see that local

police departments are stepping in to
help the honest shoppers as best they
can.
Recently, the Cherry Hill and
Voorhees police departments announced a program available to the
residents of its town. The department
is providing two safe zones one
outside in the parking lot, and one inside the lobby where people can conduct legal peer-to-peer transactions.
Each location is equipped with security cameras that will record all activi-

ty in the zones, 24 hours a day, seven

days a week.
The Cherry Hill and Voorhees programs are timely, of course, with these
types of transactions becoming more
popular at this time of year. Neighboring Evesham Township released a
similar program of its own in April.
Police departments play a huge role
in making people feel safe. Their job is
not just to pull drivers over and arrest
criminals.
We couldnt be happier about the
safe zones program in Cherry Hill
and Evesham, and we urge police departments in other towns to offer similar programs. If other towns do offer
the safe zones program, please remind your residents of it, and urge
them to use it.

DEC. 28, 2015 THE MEDFORD SUN 7

letter to the editor

Writer: Editorial about
Gov. Christie misguided
The Nov. 11-17 Medford Sun featured an article in the opinion
section titled The Chris Christie
effect, which attempts to blame
Gov. Christie for the Democrats
picking up seats in the General
Assembly during the Nov. 3 election. This article is misguided.
There are 690,000 more registered
Democrats in New Jersey than
registered Republicans, so it is no
surprise that Democrats picked
up seats in an off-year election.
What is noteworthy is that
Christie has been able to work
with Democrats during his time
in office to get significant legislation passed. In particular, public
worker pension and health-care
reform, which is arguably the
most significant issue facing this
state.
The article mentions that the
voters are unhappy with the way
things are going in the Assembly.

That may be the case, but what

does that have to do with
Christie? He is a Republican and
Democrats control the Assembly.
The article mentions Christies
blunders back home. What
blunders would these be? Was it a
blunder to take on the issue that
could potentially bankrupt the
state? Reforming public worker
pension and health-care benefits
was an economic necessity and
the state is in better financial condition because of it.
The article mentions the
George Washington Bridge debacle. This indeed was a debacle. As
someone who commutes to work
on a regular basis, I would be furious if I was stuck in that mess.
But again, what does this have to
do with Christie? This has been
thoroughly investigated by the
U.S. attorney in New Jersey and a
state legislative committee and
there is zero evidence Christie
had any prior knowledge of the

Scouts Eagle projects improved

church facilities, park areas
SCOUTS
Continued from page 1
its a great example to set and it
will be a great thing to have for
you guys going forward as well,
Watson said.
Christopher Haugland rebuilt
the emergency staircase exit and
installed a new drainage pipe and
cover at Calvary Lutheran
Church in Medford for his Eagle
Scout project.
As Watson put it, he enhanced
the safety of the children in the
churchs preschool and vacation
Bible school by allowing for the
safe evacuation of the congregation should the need arise.

Mark Egan rebuilt and repainted the weathered park benches

and picnic tables in Cranberry
Park to enhance the usability of
the park for neighborhood families and senior citizens who use
Cranberry Hall.
Egan led a group of Scouts in
what Watson described as an
overall effort to enhance the beauty and safety of the parks amenities.
Joshua Walton constructed
and installed a handicap accessible bridge in the Freedom Park
Dog Park in collaboration with
Freedom Barks Incorporated,
using funds obtained via Nutro
Dog Foods.
His project enhanced the usability and accessibility of the

dog park for all users by designing, constructing and installing a

bridge over a small water stream.
As the proclamation read,
these boys now better understand
the value of community involvement and civic duty. Their leadership skills are an asset to the Boy
Scouts of America Troop 20, their
community and their family and
friends.
At the conclusion of the acknowledgements, Watson made it
a point to challenge the rest of the
Scouts in attendance to be standing among their fellow Eagle
Scouts next year during this presentation.
Great job by all of you, Watson said. Next year, I want to be
reading some more of these!

sponsible for organizing new Rotary clubs and strengthening existing ones.
During an installation ceremony aboard the battleship New Jersey, he said his main goals for the
coming year are to improve membership in each local Rotary club
as well as to encourage Rotarians
to make PolioPlus a major goal.
When we began the global campaign to eradicate polio in 1985,
we had 350,000 children a year

catching polio in 224 countries,

Forward said. Today, we are
down to two countries and will
probably finish this year with
fewer than 100 new cases of
polio. He launched 150,000 Kids
Week in October, with the goal of
raising enough to immunize
150,000 children simply by having each Rotarian skip one meal
that week.

lane closing. So mentioning this

is simply an attempt to infer guilt
by association. That issue is dead.
Whether Christie gets the Republican nomination and ultimately wins the presidential election is anyones guess at this
point. But many people around
the country are looking for a president who is tough, can get things
done on the important issues and
can work with both major political parties. Sounds like someone
we know.

gles, Anthony Bonagura.
Kirk plans to use the $1,000 donation to run three workshops
that will be free to students in the
community, as well as a STEM
event for her high school students.
I am very excited to have been
chosen! I was totally taken aback
when I received the email, Kirk
said. I am so fortunate to have
the opportunity to do something
every day that I love. Not many
people have that chance.
Kirk has been teaching in the
Lenape Regional High School District for seven years, six of those
years being at Shawnee.
After graduating from The College of New Jersey in 2009, she
dove right into her teaching career and is now teaching technology education, more formally
known as industrial arts.
She teaches various classes

game. She brought her husband Al and friends Jeff and Gina Kehl.
such as drafting and design I and
II, architecture and engineering
to a wide range of students spanning from ninth to 12th grade.
Kirk employs a unique teaching style that constantly enforces
keeping things current and try-

ing to tie in the community any

way she can.
Shes led numerous projects
with her students, including making cat toys for the Animal Welplease see NOMINATION, page 18

But Forward also encouraged

Rotarians to continue their community and youth service outreach. "As local leaders and volunteers, Rotarians can help find
community solutions to local
needs," he said.
Area Rotary clubs are involved
in many local and international
service activities. The Rotary
Club of Medford Sunrise, for example, has led polio immunization volunteer teams to India

while also serving the local community with the Dickens Festival
and Medford Community Calendar. The Medford-Vincentown Rotary organizes the Halloween Parade and numerous other local
projects, as do nearby Rotary
clubs in Marlton, Mt. Laurel, and
across the state.
A commissioned lay pastor and
Realtor with Keller Williams Realty in Medford, Forward has
been a passionate volunteer in
many humanitarian service endeavors. He has delivered relief
supplies to war victims in
Lebanon, started an orphanage in
Romania, and was a national win-

fare Association, designing and
implementing a number of gardens in Medford Lakes, offering
free STEM workshops to the community and even leading students
as they created a miniature golf
course that is open to the community.
To me, being a teacher is more
than teaching students curriculum. It's about establishing connections and getting the students
to be inspired by something every
day. Because of what I teach, I
have the chance to work with the
same students for up to four
years, so in those four years, we
all become very close; they tend to
enjoy my classes because they are
engaged as well as being academically challenged, Kirk said.
Saying students tend to enjoy
her classes may be a bit of an un-

derstatement, as she was nominated for this award solely by her

students; she had no idea she was
even in the running for the award
until she received the message
she had won.
Kirk has a knack for being
humble and deflecting the credit
elsewhere.
The best part of receiving this
award has been simply being acknowledged for doing what I do
every day. I am not one to boast
about things that I do, so to be recognized is a huge honor. I try to
get my students recognition for
all the things they do, as they are
the ones creating and building.
Im just giving them tools and a
few words of wisdom. Im excited
that I can show the community
that I am just one great teacher in
the area. Our schools are full of
men and women like me who give
their all and love what they do,
Kirk said.
Shortly after being notified
about receiving the award,

Michael Finn, senior vice president and general counsel of Axalta, invited Kirk and her three
guests to their suite on game day.
The group wound up staying in
the suite for the entire the game
as Finn treated them to his favorite foods and gave them some
Eagles memorabilia to take home.
She also got to skip the hectic
check-in lines and saw a great
game that came down to the wire.
Unfortunately, her Eagles were
not able to pull out the victory,
losing by one point, but it did not
relinquish her fandom for the
team.
Kirk could not say enough
about how nice and welcoming
everyone was.
They do a great job at recognizing the people in the community and are constantly trying to
do new and innovative things
with their stadium. This just goes
to show that they are truly passionate about the community!
Kirk said.
