Presidents Report

THURSDAY 3 DECEMBER
SPEAKER: MAX DARBY
TOPIC: NEW MEMBER TALK
CHAIR: FRED HOFMANN
AV: ADRIAN CULSHAW
CASH DESK: JOHN BEATY & MALCOLM PARKS
HOST: ANTONY NIXON

A lot happens in a week. I reflect on the wonderful meal we

had at The Grange in Beaumaris after the golf. We received
a very hospitable welcome from the proprietor and his staff,
and the meal was exceptional. Quite a few stories were told,
we all enjoyed ourselves. Thanks everyone for this hard work
and then for rocking up to debrief with all your friends.
We were back at the Concourse again on Saturday for the
Christmas carnival, we have really contributed to the sense of
community and the ongoing prosperity of our retail area which
we all enjoy so much. Richard Shermon put in an exceptional
effort, we really appreciate his commitment especially when so
many of the arrangements only get finally locked in at the last
moment. Kerrie especially added her wisdom and calmness
as adjustments had to be made. I would like to thank the
members who turned out again, most of them had also been at
the golf, an exceptional effort. Many members and partners
showed their skills; popcorn making, Santa Christmassing,
selling tickets (some whilst their leg was up), raffle selling,
money gathering, car parking, generator and furniture provision, rubbish bin moving and negotiation; well done everyone.
It was also great to welcome Clem Quick to yet another event,
hes already making his commitment evident. Our presence
made the event work. See photos page on page 4.
We saw Trevor Alwright, his partner and their child at the Carnival, Trevor is very pleased to be attending our Christmas
Party at the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron (BMYS) on the
10th of December. This is going to be a lovely night, Rewa and
accomplices have worked on the theming, David Lea has done
a lot of work on the visuals, Richard, Malcolm and Greg have
ensured that out of the ideas has come order. BMYS have
provided us with a great deal for the night, 2 courses, a welcome drink and canaps as well as a bar for us to buy by the
bottle or glass. Details of the Kris Kringle are contained on
page 5.
Our Sandringham College speakers were fantastic last Thursday, their information will be covered later, it was really heartening to hear them say they wanted close relationships and
valued their relationship with us.

A few of our most committed workers have been recovering from health issues, I send our best wishes on your
behalf to Gillian Abbott Judy OBrien, Jeni Beaty and of
course to Roy who has been having his annual fix up.
Next week I am looking forward to Max Darbys New
Member Talk at The Buckingham, a different venue.
Thanks to you all, we have had many calls on our time
recently and you have all responded very generously.

Yours in Rotary

I thought the change to start times for the afternoon shifts

worked very well; a good innovation. Please tell the IMG
guys that blue rope is very hard to see against bitumen
and grass backgrounds. I would have preferred to see
fluro webbing around the track at Davies to protect the
running track.
In all we had over 40 of our Members and partners/friends
involved in the event, from a total Club membership of 47,
so despite a few last minute withdrawals and adjustments, all legitimate, I was very proud of our commitment.
On behalf of our President Trish, and all our members, we
thank you for involving us in your major annual fundraising event once again. Please pass on our congratulations
to your Club and Members.
James

Message To RC of Huntingdale
As always it was a pleasure to work with you and your
team on this event. The reports from the areas we were
not fully managing, overseen by Cec, and our rapport with
David in those we were, confirms that Rotarians working
together for the same goals can achieve great things.
The ladies in the ticket stall were also well looked after.
Our compliments to the breakfast team, although I think
that Thunder and Lightning strike the first day was a bit
over the top from Frank.
All-in-all a somewhat benign year. Far fewer dramas
(excitement) than in previous years, and a bit sad that
IMG was not able to secure some more name players, to
beef up the crowds a bit more. We would rather be busy
than bored, and see the event more successful.
Our Sunday wind-down dinner was titled The Masters
Heroes, with Peter Senior at the top of the list, followed
by so many others who put in terrific efforts. Wolf (of the
wolf-pack) put in a full five days and was promoted from
assistant to partner. Several members put in four and
three full days, but of course it doesnt matter if its a half
day or the lot, everyone counts.

See details page 6

Note; As part of our arrangement with Hocking Stuart discounts on agents fees are available to RCOB members.

Your own people put in tremendous hours for this annual

fundraising event, and have our respect and admiration,
as do you.

Each Rotarian should bring two books,

their partner one. This will ensure we
have enough presents for our guests.
Books should be a good holiday read.
Books should be wrapped as per the attached photos to:
a) fit in with the theme of the night
b) enable folk to swap it with people at
their table if they have already read it

Flirt in Training

A young Victoria's riflebird
practices a mating display he'll
need when he's older and has
undergone a colour transformation: Adult males are velvety
black with a bright blue-green
crown. This juvenile was photographed in Daintree Rainforest in Queensland, one of the
last strongholds of ancient
Australian rain forests.
