and offer a myriad of

However, poor
design and installa-

Showers are critical areas with
respect to mold and moisture control.
They are commonly exposed to thou-
sands of gallons of water per year
and high humidity levels.
The tile covering alone will not
prevent water and moisture penetra-
tion.
As such, it is essential that an ef-
fective moisture management system
be designed and installed properly to
protect surrounding building materi-
als and prevent mold growth.
The traditional method for install-
ing tiled shower assemblies creates
a water in/water out system.
Since shower pan liners are
placed below the mortar setting bed
in these assemblies, moisture is al-
lowed to saturate the mortar bed be-
fore exiting the system through the
weep holes in the drain.
When the pan liner is placed on
a level substrate instead of a sloped
surface, a relatively common error,
moisture in the system will have no
means to exit through the weep holes
in the drain and the mortar bed will
remain saturated for extended peri-
ods of time.

Orion business SCATE-ing across the web

Since 2001, SCATE Technolo-
gies, Inc., have been making a mark on
social media and web-based operations.
Or, more like making the marks.
Their products are sold essentially in
every country on the planet, and used by
some of the biggest companies in today’s
market.
Recently, SCATE -- with corporate
oices located in Orion Township -- won
the title ‘Best of Michigan Business’ by
Corp! Magazine.
SCATE accepted their award this last
February, along with the distinction of win-
ning a ‘TiE Midwest 20’ award last Octo-
ber. Steve Sadler, SCATE President and
CEO, is also in line to accept a ‘Leaders
and Innovators’ award.
“It feels more like an overnight suc-
cess in ten years,” said Jeff Holth, CTO
of SCATE.
Comparable to a “Mini-Adobe”,
SCATE’s product line evolved from cus-
tom software development. Off-the-shelf
products include those concerned with
eLearning, search engine-optimization for
global clients, as well as marketing and
video production. Consulting services are
also offered as one of SCATE’s products.
“We help companies answer the question:
How can I market myself, without break-
ing the bank,” Holth said.
However, after the rise of social me-
dia, SCATE jumped on to that market, and
hasn’t stopped riding the wave created by
the increasing popularity of Twitter,
MySpace, and Facebook. “Successful
companies are nimble enough to go where
the market is,” Sadler said.
Instead of sticking to a rigid five-year
plan, SCATE hopes to surpass their ex-
pectations, and competitors.
One of their products, influenced by
the market created by social media, allows
users to share photos, videos, documents
and pdf files with others on twitter. It’s
called ScreenTweet, and it’s free to cus-
tomers.
Twitter fans are not the only ones who
employs SCATE. Their customer base
ranges from the everyday user, to For-
tune 500 companies, and everyone
inbetween.
Former Detroit Lions’ wide receiver
Herman Moore teamed up with SCATE in
2004. His company, Simple One Media,
provides exposure to high school students
who seek exposure for recruiting. He hopes
to expands his business into fantasy sports.
When asked why Moore teamed up
with SCATE, his response was simple:

“They understand the client’s needs
and they are very sensitive to that.” Moore
added.
SCATE is continually inventing new
software products for their market. On
average, 8 to 10 products are being con-
sidered for sale. Whether it is released or
not depends on if there is a market that
will fund it.
All this work is being done in Orion,
by local residents. “We don’t outsource
anything outside of the Orion and Oxford
Townships.” Sadler states.
SCATE has localities in Ontario,
Canada, and Arizona as well. How SCATE
does business is over the web, and that is
how they will exponentially grow. How-
ever, any physical expansion will be done
here, in Michigan. “It’s not by accident
that we employ locally. We live here, we
have families here too. We are committed
very strongly to keeping jobs here.” Holth
says.
At the moment, SCATE employees
twelve, however they will be growing in
numbers.
They hire students directly out of the
local universities, keeping the recent grads
in Michigan.
“We made it through last year,” com-
ments Holth, “and we are glad to be com-
ing out the other end.” The market of so-
cial media appears to be exclusively in-
creasing, and that’s good news for SCATE.

Optimistic economists are forecasting
brighter financial times ahead, pointing to
“green shoots” heralding a return to prosper-
ity.
Several business owners aren’t waiting
for an economic “springtime” to arrive in Lake
Orion.
These entrepreneurs are sowing seeds
for success through hard work and face-to-
face networking facilitated by the Greater Orion
Local Business Network (LBN).
“Our local business climate reflects the
overall health of the national economy,” said
Grant Fodor, financial advisor, Edward Jones
in Oxford and president of the Greater Orion
LBN. “Times are tough.
These challenges can be overcome, be-
ginning at the grassroots level. All LBN mem-
bers are advocates and representatives for
every other business partner in the organiza-
tion, providing leads and referrals.”
Connecting personally to prospec-
tive customers locally is a powerful sales tool,
Fodor said, but the potential impact of area
LBN membership is magnified by the scope
of the larger LBN organization.
Nearly 40 LBN chapters throughout
Michigan constitute the Clarkston-based Lo-
cal Business Network. (The Greater Orion LBN
chapter was founded in 2007.)
Each member of the Greater Orion LBN
chapter has access to – and is listed on – the
LBN intranet site, expanding networking po-
tential dramatically.
Additionally, every member of the Greater
Orion LBN is encouraged to attend meetings
hosted by other chapters, increasing referral
opportunities.
“The real strength of the Greater Orion
LBN lies in the ability for every member to

Based upon the information collected,
nearly 60 percent of all sales-generating leads
arrive from outside the local LBN chapter.

The Greater Orion LBN chapter meets
from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on the second and
fourth Tuesdays of every month, at CJ’s Café
in downtown Lake Orion.
Each business representative provides a
one-minute overview of their enterprise, along
with a description of an ideal referral customer.
Additionally, one member at each meet-
ing provides a detailed business overview in
a 10-minute presentation, creating well-in-
formed representatives.
