p and fanfare, let us introduce you to the Hindu Malayalee ceremony. Don t get us wr
ong, for all its brevity, it is a beautiful ceremony, replete with deep symbolis
m and tradition. Another bonus, its short length ensures that everyone s there on ti
me! From the Pennu Kanal to the Thalikettu to the Sadhya, here s our guide to a Hind
u Mallu wedding.
Kerala Hindu Wedding Ceremony| Engagement regional weddings india
The Vivaha Nischayam is when the marriage alliance is announced in the presence
of the elders and
close friends. Whether it is a simple affair or a large celebration, you still w
ant to look your best.
A great option would be to pick something classic and elegant, but not too gaud
y.
The quintessential Kerala bride usually wears a sari, bedecks her hair
with flowers and wears gold jewellery. This is your chance to experiment a littl
e
with your look- since the engagement ceremony is not as formal as the actual we
dding ceremony.
Pick a colour based on the current trends, but do take your complexion into acco
unt.
Try an innovative drape when it comes to your saree, try a couple of hairstyles
prior to the event
to find one that frames your face beautifully, while also suiting the occasion.
Have a piece of jewellery that you love, but isn t grand enough for the wedding cere
mony?
It could be just the thing to wear for your engagement. Don t be too heavy handed wi
th your
make-up, focus on your best features and carry yourself with confidence.
If you re steady on your feet, don t shy away from those heels, unlike the wedding day,
you won t have to be on your feet 24/7. In some areas, the wedding rings are exchang
ed during
this ceremony, so you might want to take the style of the ring into account whil
e planning your ensemble.
On the evening before the wedding, the Ayana, the families and friends of both t
he bride and the groom gather in order to bestow their blessings upon the couple
. A grand dinner will be served, while the bride sits facing the east and enjoys
a traditional five course vegetarian meal with members of her family. The bride
will be dressed beautifully, bejewelled, and her hands will be decorated with m
ehendi. When it comes to picking your ensemble for the ceremony, don t go for someth
ing extremely elaborate or heavy. With henna applied over your hands and legs, y
ou ll want to be comfortable and be able to move around unencumbered. You can access
orize for these occasions with minimal jewellery, so it s best to go elegant and tas
teful.

Kerala Hindu Wedding Ceremony

Marriages are conducted either in the temple or in the Kalyana Mantapa of the we
dding hall. If it is in the temple, the priest performs all the rites, in a simp
le, beautiful ceremony. One of the rituals involves the groom lifting the bride s fo
ot and placing it on the Ammi (grinding stone). This symbolizes that bride has b
roken all her old ties with her paternal family. The groom then takes the bride s fo
ot forward seven times. This indicates her entry into the new family. In a Kalya
na Mantapa, the bridegroom is received ceremoniously, and made to sit in a canop
y, which is gorgeously decorated with flowers, fabric, palm fronds and banana st
alks. The wedding is an ode to colour: the vibrant red of the bride s sari contrasts
sharply with the stark lines of the groom s mundu. She wears stunning, intricate, h
eavy gold jewellery, offset by the simplicity of the fragrant white jasmine flow
ers in her hair. Make sure your shoes are comfortable, as you will be on your fe
et for most of the day. Since your jewellery is going to be heavy, keep your hai
r and make-up subtle. After the ceremony, the guests are treated to the Sadhya,
a typical Kerala meal that includes rice, three varieties of pickle, sambhar, to
ran curries and sweets, kalan, avial, olan, pacchadi, payasam, pappad all served
on plantain leaves, with payasam like paladaaprathaman or chaka prathaman for d
essert.
Kerala Hindu Wedding Ceremony| Wedding Mandap
Once the guests leave, the bridegroom, accompanied by his parents and close memb
ers of the family, takes his wife to his house for the first time. This ceremony
is called Kudivepu or Gruhapravesha. This is the bride s first visit to her husba
nd s house and she is expected to wear the saree given to her by her husband durin
g the wedding. She is given a vilakku and enters her new home, as the bringer of
prosperity, putting her right foot forward first.
