Introduction

In order to get the best benefits from an exercise, you must reach a target heart rate that can be
determined by various factors and is different for each individual. With a Polar heart rate monitor,
you can more easily maintain a target heart rate or simply be aware of their heart rate while
exercising.

Target Heart Rate General Guidelines from American Medical Association

The monitoring system is made up of three components:

-

Polar Wristwatch

Polar Wear Link

Smart Fabric Sensor Strap

The strap contains electrodes, which are conductors of electrical current from the heart. These
electrodes are activated by moisture provided by your sweat. The wear link is the sensor that takes
the signal picked up by the electrodes on the strap and transfers it to the watch through infrared
communication.
Assemble the system, adjust the strap, and begin collecting data in less than 10 minutes. As always,
you should consult with a physician before starting a new exercise program. This system can measure
heart rate for periods of exercise lasting seconds or hours, carried out both indoor and outdoor.

How To Setup The Monitoring System

Shannon Bradley

1. There will be 3 sizes of Smart Fabric Sensor straps to choose from. XS-S,
M-XXL, and XXXL are the three sizes marked on the strap underneath the
number tag.

2. Try the strap on over your clothes to ensure you have selected the right
size strap. Then practice adjusting the strap to get a snug fit.

3. Attach the Polar Wear Link to the Smart Fabric Sensor strap. On the
back of the Polar Wear Link on the bottom there will be an L and R.
Make sure the L is on the side that has the words Wear Link + Smart
Fabric Sensor facing upright. Also make sure the Polar Wear Link logo is
upright.

4. Wrap the strap around you, underneath your shirt, with the electrodes
pointed towards your skin and placed at the end of the breastbone.
(Line on person)

5. Adjust the Smart Fabric Sensor strap as needed to get a snug, but
comfortable fit.

6. Hook the left end of the strap together by placing the hook in the loop.
(They will both be on left side of your body, with the words Wear+
Smart Fabric Sensor facing up; see hook and clasp together picture for
clarification.)

7. After you have hooked the strap, go back to where the wristwatch is and hold the wristwatch
towards where the wear link is on the strap (about 2-4 inches away from participants body) to
allow the wristwatch to recognize the wear link.

8. The wear link and wristwatch should sync within 5-10 seconds (If experiencing difficulties,
reference the troubleshooting guide).

9. Once they are in sync, heart rate will show up on the watch, but it will not start recording
until you do the next step.

10. When a wear link has a new battery it needs to re-learn how to sync with the wristwatch, to
the wristwatch will say Teach new wear link? Hit the Red okay button to say, Yes.

11. Hit the Red okay button and then select Start from the menu.

12. The wristwatch will say, Combine with exercise and have Yes or No as options.

13. Hit No by hitting the Down button on the wristwatch and then selecting it with the Red okay
button.

14. The wristwatch will then say Heart Rate and then the screen
turns to the timer on top with the heart rate displayed on the
bottom.

15. Place the wristwatch on your wrist.

heart rate displayed on the bottom of the screen; underneath the calories burned (top) and
time elapsed (middle) (see picture to the right).

17. To complete the exercise press the Stop button located on the bottom left of the
wristwatch. After pressing this button it will ask you if you want to complete the exercise and
you will hit the Stop button a second time to stop recording heart rate.

18. If there are any problems please refer to the Troubleshooting guide.

Conclusions
You have now successfully recorded your heart rate using the polar heart rate monitoring
system. You can now take off the strap and wristwatch. Take the Polar wear link off of the
strap. Wash the strap in a sink with soap and water, and dab it dry with a towel. Squeezing
or wringing the strap while drying could cause damage to the elasticity. Follow these same
steps to carry out another exercise. If you want to do more you can download the Polar
ProTrainer Software to plan, track, and analyze exercises. By referencing the companys
website (www.polar.com) you can learn how to transfer your data to the software and carry
out its various functions.

Troubleshooting
QUESTION
Will the monitor work if I wear the
strap over my shirt?
What if I accidently hit a button during
the time I have the wristwatch on?
What if the strap is too tight or loose or
I cannot get a proper fit?
If you are unable to pick-up a heart
rate signal with the wear link sensor try
the following:

SOLUTION
No, the strap needs to form a skin to electrode
connection in order to get the heart rate.
If the heart rate recording was disrupted, you will
need to start the time over.
Try a different sized strap or adjust the strap using
the adjustor buckle.
Make sure the sensor and watch are more than
5 feet from another functioning sensor and
watch to reduce interference.
Make sure the electrode belt is very clean.
(Wash in machine if necessary.)
The battery cap on wear link may not be fully
locked in place. Try to push it back into place
with fingers or remove it and reinstall it back
into place.
Check to make sure strap is secured and facing
correct direction.
Check for corrosion on the belt and inside the
snaps.
If the above does not solve the problem, try
replacing the battery (CR2025).
