Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the University of Southern Indiana and the
undergraduate experience with a specific focus on academic success,
campus involvement, and community engagement. Students will discuss
issues of value and behavior in the college setting, discover what resources
are available to them, and learn what it means to integrate themselves into
the campus and surrounding communities.
Course objectives:
Understand the value of the full higher educational experience and
participate in some aspect of university life beyond the classroom.
Understand the self-direction and motivation required to succeed and
develop a plan for achieving academic goals.
Understand how a USI education applies to community issues and
engage in an activity with stakeholders beyond the university.
Implementation:
This course is designed to help bridge the transition between high school and
college. You will develop skills and identify campus resources that will help
you achieve academic success at USI. On campus and off, you will engage
with student groups and community organizations, exploring opportunities
for personal growth as an active member of the USI and Evansville
communities. Finally, you will begin to identify professional goals and map
out the coursework, training, or extracurricular activities necessary to
achieve your goals.
Attendance & Participation:
Student discussions are at the heart of this course, and for that reason,
regular attendance and active participation in the seminar and cultural
events are required. You are allowed a maximum of two absences (excused
or unexcused). For each additional absence, your final grade will be reduced
by one letter grade. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what
the homework was and come prepared for the next class. Assignments must
be submitted by the due date listed on your syllabus, even if you are absent.
To maintain a collegial classroom environment, you are expected

Disabilities:
If you have a disability for which you may require academic accommodations
for this class, please register with Disability Resources (DR) as soon as
possible. Students who have or who receive an accommodation letter from
DR are encouraged to meet privately with course faculty to discuss the
provisions of those accommodations as early in the semester as possible. To
qualify for accommodation assistance, students must first register to use the
disability resources in DR, Orr Center Rm. 095; call 812-464-1961; or visit
http://www.usi.edu/disabilities. To help ensure that accommodations will be
available when needed, students are encouraged to meet with course faculty
at least 7 days prior to the actual need for the accommodation
Academic Integrity:
Plagiarism and cheating of any form are serious offenses and may result in
an F for the assignment, the course, or expulsion from the university.
Notification of Participation in University Sanctioned Events:
Students who must miss class to participate in a university sanctioned event
are expected to notify me in advance and complete the work, including tests,
in advance of the absence. It is the students responsibility to communicate
with me in advance regarding their absences and to determine a schedule
for make-up work
