Deputy President calls on

everybody to work together
L
ast week Friday Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe in his address to the National
Council of Provinces at its sitting at Sekhukhune FET College (Dr CN Phatudi Campus),
Praktiseer, Burgersfort during the ‘Taking Parliament to the People programme’,
highlighted the need for government to be more transparent and responsive.
He stressed that people should have enough information about the development projects in
their areas, so that they could raise the alarm to public representative in cases where there is
lack of quality service delivery and plans are not being fulfilled.
Deputy President Motlanthe spoke on the five priorities of national government namely
education, health, rural development, creation of decent work opportunities and the fight
against crime.
He stressed the importance of education and urged the youth to channel their energies into
making positive changes to society such as campaigning against drug abuse and for road
safety.
He also reminded the Greater Tubatse community that they have the power to call their
public representatives to account and that this power is with them at all times
“The youth have energy, but this energy needs to be channelled to better and productive
efforts, education of our youth should not just be the responsibility of government but society
as a whole,” said the Deputy President.
He emphasised government’s commitment to speed up the roll out of the national HIV and
AIDS testing to ensure the reduction in new infections and encouraging positive lifestyles.
Deputy President Motlanthe also called on the people of Limpopo to work together with law
enforcement agencies to root out crime.
“We live with these criminals and we tend to say if I have not been affected by crime it is
none of my business, but I can assure you when they have exhausted your neighbours they will
come for you,” he said.
In conclusion, the Deputy President encouraged the NCOP to continue with its oversight
duties as it was vital in ensuring that government delivers on its priorities and realise a better
life for all.

Last Friday morning’s sitting of the National Council of Provinces did not interact with the public.
It was a proper parliamentary session with all the ordinary House Rules and regulations. The
public was not only treated to the various speeches by important people, but also to a debate by
party representatives in the house. The permanent NCOP deputy chairperson, Thandi Memela
(right), kept most of the debate smoothly on track before the Deputy President was called to reply
on the debate. The tents in Praktiseer were packed.

during the debate.
Some of the key issues raised by the people

Education
* School infrastructure, shortage of educators especially for maths, science and technical
subjects and educators employed on temporal basis
* The provincial department has extended the contracts of all temporary educators at
Kweledi Secondary School whose contracts was ending in a few days and has committed
to doing so with other schools.

Local governance
* Electricity, water, sanitation and road infrastructure
* Water is available to mines but not to communities
* Allegations of corruption when it comes to procurement
* The minister has promised an amendment to the Local Government: Municipal
Systems Act to deal with some of the shortcomings in the governance of local
government.

Mining
* This community is located in an area full of mineral wealth, but its people remain
poor.
* Mines do not employ locals because they do not have the necessary skills (the youth
need learnerships).
* The community is divided and mines find it difficult to work with them

Nato’s Ville
* blasting at mines has damaged houses and schools.
* The minister has committed herself to facilitating the resolution of many of the
challenges related to mining.

Youth
* Teenage pregnancy (the youth need to understand that teenage pregnancy delays
them in preparing for their future, it is also risky)
Security Complex - Burgersfort * Facilities for disabled people.

Rural development and land reform

* People want infrastructure for economic activities, training, water, fencing for grazing
and cropping fields, and work opportunities.
* The minister supports the idea of having Jane Furse as a pilot site for comprehensive
rural development in this district.

What is the programme capable of doing?

Benefits
* A small example of the benefits of this programme is the small but significant
improvements we see in this institution (it was an almost rundown institution with no
water, but now it has some
water, the soccer-field is levelled, it has been painted, there is paving etc).
* If these things can happen here, they can happen to the rest of the community.
* Our report will illustrate the benefits to the communities.
* Already, the community of Mahlatsi which was visited by the NCOP last year and
earlier this month has written to say the sport ground has been upgraded, water
problem has been resolved by the district, housing units and toilets are to be built, and
MEC has announced the construction of road, but they now want electricity and
communication network).

* This time around, once we have processed the report, I intend coming back

NCOP, provincial legislature and municipality to develop a follow-up plan.
* The plan will identify which issues could be done this year, next year and by the end of
the term.
* I will share that plan with the leader of government, business and Premier because it
is clear that the area needs great support from national government.

This mythical character that forms part of Easter is not a new invention.
The Easter Bunny’s origin is being disputed. Some sources say that this symbol was created
or is it even older
than that?
with the pagan festival of Eostre when the Anglo-Saxons honoured the goddess Eostre. Her
earthly symbol was a rabbit. Other sources say the bunny originated in Germany in the 1600’s.
The first edible Easter bunnies were also made in the early 1800’s. They were made of pastry
and sugar. In the 1700’s the bunny entered America. The German term Osterhase became
known as “Oschter Haws”. In the American tradition the Easter bunny brought children
presents similar to Santa Claus on Christmas. Coloured eggs and the exchange of eggs also
formed part of the Easter tradition.
An abundance of eggs during the Catholic fast of Lent contributed to the tradition of giving
and eating coloured eggs during Easter by especially German Protestants.
Colours used in the colouring of eggs vary. Red was popular as this symbolised the renewal of
life in the springtime and later the blood of Jesus Christ who were crucified. Peasants in the
olden days coloured eggs by boiling them with leaves and flower petals. Green was also used
to celebrate the new foliage coming after the long winter in the northern hemisphere.
Easter within the Christian context is when Jesus was resurrected three days after his
crucifixion. This is celebrated as Good Friday. Easter can also refer to the season called
Eastertide or Easter season. Traditionally this lasted 40 days.
A hot cross bun, or cross-bun, is a type of sweet spiced bun made with currants or raisins and
leavened with yeast. It has a cross marked on the top which might be effected in one of a
variety of ways including: pastry, flour and water mixture, rice paper, icing, or intersecting cuts.

R699
In many historically Christian countries, buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday, with
the cross standing as a symbol of the crucifixion. They are believed by some to pre-
date Christianity, although the first recorded use of the term “hot cross bun” is not until 1733;
it is believed that buns marked with a cross were eaten by Saxons in honour of the
goddess Eostre (the cross is thought to have symbolised the four quarters of the moon);

Hot Cross Buns 6’s

“Eostre” is probably the origin of the name “Easter”. Others claim that the Greeks marked
cakes with a cross, much earlier. According to cookery writer Elizabeth
David, Protestant English monarchs saw the buns as a dangerous hold-over of Catholic belief
in England, being baked from the dough used in making the communion wafer. Protestant
England attempted to ban the sale of the buns by bakers but they were too popular, and A wide range of Easter chocolate treats such as Easter

eggs and Easter bunnies are available in store!
Sharing a hot cross bun with another is supposed to ensure friendship throughout the coming
year, particularly if “Half for you and half for me, Between us two shall goodwill be” is said at
the time.
In the United States, hot cross buns sometimes include candied citron in addition to the raisins
or currants. In both Australia and New Zealand recently a chocolate version of the bun has
become popular. They generally contain the same mixture of spices but chocolate chips are

used instead of currants. This is due to the close association between Easter and chocolate, or
simply to a love of chocolate in general. In the Czech Republic, mazanec is a similar cake or
sweet bread eaten at Easter time. It often has a cross marked on top. (Adapted from

Do you want a tarred

road?
The good news for rate and taxpayers in the Greater Tubatse
Municipality is that the municipal draft budget and Integrated
Development Plan (IDP) for the 2010/11 municipal financial year
have been adopted (see public notioice on the bopttom of the page).
The bad news is that the projects your deperately hope for in
your town or village, may not appear on the project lists of these
documents. Do not despair. You still have time to study the
documents when they become available on 08 April. By
submitting written comments and inputs to these documents you
get a chance to exercise your vote, like the Deputy President of the
Republic, Kgalema Motlanthe, requested during last week’s
“Taking Parliament to the People” government roadshow in
Praktiseer, where he said residents also have to take
responsibility around government delivery.
Meanwhile capital projects from last year’s budget money is
progressing well, like this road which in the process of being
tarred in Ohrigstad (Suikerbossie Street to be precise).
But, although people are happy about the road, some of them
complaine that the drive-ins to their houses are to steep and that
it damaged their cars, especially in the beginning stages of
construction when a deep ditch was created when the curbstones
were put in.
The some people also allege that the road is not entirely above
board as it was not one of the bad roads in town and it is only
tarred because an important municipal official lives in the street.
Platinum Gazette forwarded these concerns to the municipality a
few weeks ago, but no comment has been received yet.

‘A waste of resources’
The process of the NCOP visiting our area is to me nothing else but a show-off and a
waste of resources.
If you take into account the money spent on all the preparations, including the
erection of that massive marquee, as well as the catering, this could obviously amount to
millions of rands. Think of the amount forked out to the bus companies. What about the
hotel accommodation and the tight security that was planted all over.
Were these leaders not democratically elected? What are they afraid of? The tight
security clearly demonstrates that they are not at ease. Why? Because they know very
well that they are not treating us well. They are aware that they are failing to deliver the
promised goods. Apart from that, rumour has it that there are cracks in the ruling party,
and as a result of these cracks they are afraid of each other. Hence the tight security,
which was armed to the teeth.
What a vain demonstration of power!
All the money and the resources wasted during this fruitless exercise could have been
channelled towards alleviating poverty among the poorest of the poor.
What is it that the MP’s were looking for that they don’t know? Are they not South
Africans? Don’t they know our plight?
I suspect they were here with the sole purpose of boosting their waning and sagging
image, in preparation for the 2011 local elections. Next year this time, conditions here, at
Greater Sekhukhune in general, and Greater Tubatse in particular, will still remain
what they are today. We are sick and tired of these hypocrites who keep on bluffing us
with empty and porous promises. Who waste our resources on nothing. But, believe me,
history will one day judge them harshly.

BFUFC vs
Riba Cross
Masters
Above: Burgerfort United Football Club’s team who
faced the Riba Cross Masters on last week Friday.

Last week Friday Burgersfort United Football Club

hosted a game against Riba Cross Masters.
The game was played at the grounds of Laerskool
Burgersfort.
Although it was a social game the teams gave it
their all. Soon the Burgersfort United side showed
their superior fitness and skill scoring three goals in
the first half.
At half time the Riba Cross Masters still had no
points on the board.
“But they came back very strong in the second
half,” said Mr Faizal Abdullah of the Burgersfort
United team. “They managed to score two goals after
their strong attack on our defenses,” he said.
The team however did not manage to equalise the
score and the game ended. 3-2 In favour of the
Burgersfort United side.
Their team’s goal scorers were Gift Suwela, Sipho
Masinga and Tumi.
Players who would like to join the Burgersfort
United Football Club are welcome to get all the club’s
details in our diary section of today’s newspaper.

The Riba Cross Masters (above) came

back very strong in the second half of the
game.
