Titanium

Symbol : titanium, Ti

Ring design

Grade 5 titanium will be used for making the ring.

Atomic number: 22

design of ring which does not tarnish and corrode

Grade 5 alloy, Ti 6Al-4V, is the most widely used

titanium grade. It contains 6% aluminum, 4%
vanadium, 0.25% iron and 0.2% oxygen. This
alloys strength is very high and so can be used
at cryogenic temperatures up to about 800F
(427C).Ti 64 alloys corrosion resistance is
based on the existence of a consistent and
continuous oxide layer which is formed upon the
exposure to oxygen. It has a very good resistance
to corrosion in seawater. !

Element category: Transition metal

Grade 5 titanium

!
!

The grade 5 Titanium is resistant to general

corrosion but is easily attacked by environments
that cause breakdown of the protective oxide
layer including hydrofluoric, hydrochloric, sulfuric
and phosphoric acids. Because titanium, when
exposed to oxygen, creates a layer of ceramic
like oxide film, it lends itself to applications where
corrosion and erosion resistance are a concern.
Should the metal get scratched, as long as it is
exposed to oxygen, the scratch will reheal itself
with the oxide film.!

Density: 4.506/cm3
melting point: 1668 Celsius degrees
Boiling point: 5949 Celsius degrees
Mohs hardness: 6

Overall, the grade 5 titanium is lightweight and

strong, by the fact that it is strong as steel but 40%
lighter than it, Corrosion resistance, by it exhibiting
excellent resistance to corrosion, capable of
withstanding attack by dilute sulfuric and
hydrochloric acids, as well as chloride solutions and
most organic acids. This is done by forming a!
thin layer of titanium dioxide on its surface tat is
extremely difficult for these materials to penetrate. It
also doest produce allergic reactions as it is nonmagnetic and biocompatible, which led to its
increasing use in the medical field. Finally it s a
refractory metal, with a high melting point and so
makes it self useful as a refractory metal. !

Gold plating
Gold is a bright yellow chemical element which is
dense, malleable, ductile, and soft. It is precious and
very unreactive which means it does not oxidize in
the air, so the electrical conductivity stays same
over a long time. It has a good corrosion resistance,
good solder ability and when alloyed with cobalt, it
has very good wear resistance. So if we plate the
grade 5 titanium ring with gold, it wont oxidize nor
corrode. Gold plating is better than regular gold
jewelry as it is much cheaper when it still attains the
same yellow lustre of gold.

Gold plating can be carried out by electroplating.

Electroplating involves passing an electric current
through a solution called electrolyte. This is carried
out by dipping two terminals called electrodes into
the solution and connecting them into a circuit so the
gold become the positive electrode and the titanium
become the negative electrode. When we switch the
power on, the copper sulfate splits into ions. Copper
ions are attracted to the negative electrode and
slowly produce a thin layer of copper plate. The
sulfate ions arrive at the positive anode, and release
the electrons that move through the battery toward
the negative.
