Living our Legacy: Then, Now and into the Future

By Rev. Amy L. Gearhart

This Sunday, April 26, we will be celebrating 85 years of

laying of the cornerstone of the building. Just imagine
what was going on in the world in 1930. Here are some

will be a day of celebration!
If you have pictures, bulletins, or other historical
documents of your life and ministry with MUMC, bring
them along with you! Bring a friend as well and invite
them into the unfolding story of what has done and is
doing through the people called Missouri Methodists!

It was a different time, and a different world. But
Methodists in Columbia MO had already been gathering
since the first Boonslick Circuit in the early 1830s.
From that circuit, where Methodists were led by
traveling preachers as they met in homes, congregations
emerged in the early 1900s such as Broadway, Fairview,
St. Lukes and Wilkes Blvd. Still there was a stirring for a
cathedral church of Missouri Methodism to be built next
to the University of Missouri. And that is the beginning
of Missouri United Methodist Church.
This Sunday, we will welcome former Senior Pastors
Rev. Carl Schenck and Rev. Jim Bryan who will join me
in offering reflections and celebrations of our heritage

Social Justice Book Club

Announcing a new book club beginning on Tuesday, June 9 at

7 p.m. in the MUMC Parlor. The purpose of this book club
is to raise an awareness of societal concerns by reading and
discussing nonfiction books relevant to current social justice
issues. As Christians we are called to act upon contemporary
issues. We hope this new book club will be a spark that ignites
us to becoming actively engaged in an awareness of current
social justice concerns with a Christian perspective.Meetings
will be held quarterly beginning with our first book discussion of
The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. This book was listed
for 6 weeks on the New York Times best seller list. It has been
described as: stunning, invaluable, explosive and profoundly
necessary. It challenges the conventional viewpoint that
discrimination has mostly ended since the civil rights movements
of the 1960s. The book presents individual cases, court decisions
and historical events on how the war on crime has impacted
and devastated black America resulting in creation of an inferior
caste system.Make plans to read The New Jim Crow and join
others in a discussion about a book that provides an insightful
perspective of recent events such as Ferguson and similar cases.
It will be available for order through the church office.

class rooms. The desks were greatly appreciated by teachers
and students. Rainbow Network is requesting 200 more
desks! This is a great hands-on mission opportunity for MUMC
woodworkers! Call or go by the PET Warehouse, 1908 Heriford

Dont Miss Living Our Legacy!

Dear Friends, I am excited about this coming Sundays celebration. The first worship service
was held in our sanctuaryin January of 1930. Were celebrating the 85th year of vibrant
worship in one of the most beautiful settings one could imagine.
I was only 12 years old when I became part of this wonderful church. The sanctuary was
then only 27 years old. Just 9 years later, Caryl and I were married in the sanctuary. Our
first child was baptized there. I preached my first sermon there after entering Saint Paul
School of Theology. And my mothers memorial service was there.
Little did I know that I would eventually come back as Senior Pastor. An amazing journey,
humbling and deeply meaningful. Each Sunday, I am so thankful that I am privileged to
worship in this extraordinary room. The windows tell the stories of our Biblical heritage. The
beams in the ceiling remind us of the ribs holding a great ship together, as the church
has often been compared to a ship sailing on the seas of life. There is majesty and serenity. There is beauty and drama. There is inspiration and there is awe.
Yet the core of the church is not its building, but its people. The faithful saints and sinners
who strive to carry out Gods will in this very troubled world are the core of the church. The
sanctuary is but a place we gather to be renewed, strengthened, inspired to take Gods
wondrous grace out the doors and into the world.
I hope you are with us Sunday. We are building thankfully on the foundations of generations
before us. And we are looking forward with faith to serve the greater mission of Gods most
holy church. Rev. Jim Bryan
