Waris Nove Sdn Bhd is a fully owned Malaysian Company which located at
Balok, Pahang and was incorporated on 20 August 2004. The company was set up by
a group of entrepreneur to actively manufacture and produce Carboxymethyl
Cellulose (CMC) from Agro Based Product. The total area of the company is 10,000
square feet. There are 29 staffs in the company. Waris Nove Sdn Bhd is
the first and only manufacturer and producer of cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose
(CMC) in Malaysia.
This project represent commercialization of research result which comes under
the programme of Transfer of Technologies (TOT) by Malaysian palm Oil Board
(MPOB). The Company signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with
Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) on the production Carboxymethyl Cellulose from
Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch on 22nd May 2008. Besides, the Company also has been
acknowledged by Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA) through
approval of Pioneer Status application; Galakan Taraf Perintis Di Bawah Akta

INTERVIEW SESSIONS

Interview session between group leader and project and technical director of the
company, Encik Zulkarnaini.
The group leader is interviewing the company project and technical director, En
Mohd Zulkarnaini Wahab. Encik Zulkarnaini was a mechanical engineer. He has 8
years experiences in palm oil mill. He worked at UK, France, and China before. From
Encik Zulkarnaini, Waris Nove Sdn Bhd is now focusing on the manufacturing and
production of cellulose and carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) from Agro Based

Product for applications in various industries. The raw materials for production of
CMC and cellulose are oil palm empty fruit bunch. The price of raw EFB is RM7/ton.
Encik Zulkarnaini presented us the background of the company, the process of CMC
production and the achievement of the company. Now, Waris Nove Sdn Bhd is having
project with many companies such as Petromas, Azimah, Thomyam Food Industry,
Lipidchem and Joywash Marketing. They provide high quality CMC powder to these
industry. The average price of CMC is RM25/kg. They sell CMC in one package
25kg.

Carboxymethyl Cellulose CMC

CMC from Agro Based Product is anionic, water soluble and biodegradable
polymer on natural basis and it is also the most versatile of all water soluble
hydrocolloids. Thus, CMC is a hydrophilic polymer that can act in increasing the
viscosity and the stability of foodstuff. CMC was developed in Germany during the
World War 1 as a substitute for gelatin. During the 1930s, CMC was used to eliminate
the redeposition of soil on fabric during washing and rinsing. CMC is widely used in
various industries such as food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Other industries for
example detergents, drilling fluids, glue, ceramics, dye and paint stuffs also make use
of valued properties of the CMC.
Cellulose

Cellulose is an organic compound with the formula (C6H1005 )n, a

polysaccharide consisting of a linear chain of several hundred to over ten thousand
(14) linked D-glucose units. Cellulose in nature is a highly ordered structure and it
is also regarded as a polyalcoholic compound as each glucose unit within the
molecular chain bears three hydroxyl groups that makes the cellulose a solid state
polyalcohol. It has been applied in the fields such as pharmaceutical industry, textile
industry, food and non-food industry, and building insulation material.

locally made specialty product for industrial applications, strengthening the utilization
