Event Ad
Description:
A color event ad created to promote a fundraising activity using only Microsoft Word and
a scanner.

Date:
10/10/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Scanner

Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Insert and edit images in Word.
Write and edit all text in Word.
Create full-bleed color design.

Process:
I took the image right from the cover of a Halo video game and scanned it to my
computer. I then sized and edited the image in Microsoft Word. I kept the title of Halo
from the image and used it for my design and used a rounded rectangle shape to block
out the subtitle. I repeated the rectangle pattern and gradually decreased the opacity. Then
I inserted all the text and modified it to make sure it was legible. I copied the image and
cropped it around the word Hunger to make it seem like the word was transparent.

Logo
Description:
Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:
10/29/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Use the basic tools of Illustrator to create a logo for a company. Then make a black and
white version as well as a color background logo.

Process:
First I found a font that I liked and typed out the title using contrasting fonts. I used the
shape tool to create a simple rectangle as part of the clock. Then I used the rotate tool at a
45-degree angle to repeat the shape in an even circular pattern. The circle shape formed
the center of the clock. I used the shape tool to create the hands of the clock as well as the
tips. I created outlines around the text so I could modify it to blend in with the shape.

Brochure
Description:
A two-sided (trifold) folding brochure.

Date:
12/5/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided brochure. We also had to wrap text around an image and use
paragraph styles.

Process:
I set up a grid in InDesign and then created the curved flag design across the entire page,
making sure everything lined up correctly. I didnt want to use a cheesy color scheme so I
found a good quality image of an Italian flag and used the pathfinder tool to get the desired
shape I needed.
I used Illustrator to design the pizza logo. I used a hexagon shape for an outline and then
used the pen tool to make Z shapes in different colors. I changed the stroke shape and
style to give it more variety. I used the logo in the title and then lowered the opacity for a
watermark on the inside and back of the brochure.
I found a series of images that matched my color scheme and organized them throughout
the layout. I edited the Chef image in Photoshop and used that to wrap the text around. I
did the same thing with the bread with pesto image.

Flier
Description:
Create a black and white flier to promote a graduate leader conference.

Date:
10/02/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign
skills to improve the basic flier layout. Create a project folder with an image, logo, and
InDesign document to keep the links in tact.

Process:
I used the shape tool to create the repeating circles throughout the flier. I chose an image
and placed it behind the shape and text. I altered the fonts and organized the layout into a
visually appealing design.

Montage
Description:
Create a spiritually themed montage by blending two or more images together and
implementing good typography.

Date:
10/22/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Use layers in Photoshop and blend images with masks. Also use filters and apply
appropriate typography.

Process:
I started with the background image of the ocean and storm scenery, which also had a
lighthouse. I didnt like the style of the lighthouse that came with the image so I found a
different image and blended it over the original lighthouse. I then took the image of the
father holding the childs hand and blended it in using a layer mask and the brush tool
with varying levels of opacity. After the poster was organized the way I wanted, I went in
and edited the saturation, levels, and color to get a higher quality and unified image. I
used several effects to get the desired typography.

Stationery
Description:
Create a stationery and business card using a personally designed logo.

Date:
11/07/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Create a new logo for a company or personal image. Design layouts for stationery and
business card that show unity between the two projects.

Process:
I designed the logo in Illustrator using contrasting fonts and creating outlines for them. I
altered the text slightly to create more of a flow. I created the feather using the pen tool
and the eyedropper tool to get the colors I wanted. Then I placed the logo into an InDesign
document and used the shape tool to create repeating circles leading to the contact
information. I found an image online and used it as a watermark for the stationery. Finally I
used the pen tool to create a black margin on the left side to create unity between this and
the business cards.

Business Card
Description:
Create a business card that matches the stationery using the same logo.

Date:
11/07/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Create a new logo for a company or personal image. Design layouts for business card and
stationery that show unity between the two projects.

Process:
I designed the logo in Illustrator using contrasting fonts and creating outlines for them. I
altered the text slightly to create more of a flow. I created the feather using the pen tool
and the eyedropper tool to get the colors I wanted. Then in InDesign I created two boxes
that represented the size of the card. I used the shape tool to get the curve to match up
with the feather. I chose matching typography and colors.

Photodesign
Description:
Edit a personally taken photograph in Photoshop and make a promotional or inspirational
project.

Date:
10/17/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills and use a digital camera to take a picture and download it.
Size and crop the image and edit the image saturation, contrast, brightness, and hue. Use
typography and other design elements to create an appealing project.

Process:
I started by taking a picture of my roommate wearing an Indiana Pacers hat. I downloaded
the image and edited it in Photoshop using contrast, brightness, and saturation. I used
the quick selection tool to cut out the face of my roommate and placed it on a purple
background. I then used the shape tool to create the yellow rectangles. I chose basic
typography that would be appealing and communicate the message appropriately.

Web Page
Description:
A webpage designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Date:
11/19/15

Course/Instructor:
Communication 130 Section 04
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Use TextWrangler and CSS to create a web page. Place a logo created in Illustrater and
explain the design process.

Process:
I coded the basics of the web page in TextWrangler so that all the content was correct.
This is where I typed all the design process information. I used CSS to create boxes around
the images, create appropriate padding, and create borders.
