Corrosion Management - Corrosion Design Basis Memorandum (CDBM)

Topsides

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION :

A. Objectives:
To revisit, review and update existing CDBM to incorporate necessary changes as required by this
project development. Also to develop new CDBM if deemed necessary by the changes of this
project development by:
1. Establishing corrosion threats and mechanisms, corrosion rates and corrosion allowance
2. Proposing materials selection, corrosion control/mitigation and corrosion monitoring of the
facilities.

B. General:
Corrosion study shall cover the topside facilities and pipelines (existing and new facilities) i.e.
1. Process and utilities (including equipments and piping, thermal insulations piping, etc.)
2. Structures below and above sea level.
3. Pipelines, risers, launchers and receivers (including host tie-ins).
The report preparation shall comply with or refer closely to all related PETRONAS Technical
Standards (PTS). CONTRACTOR shall state any exclusion with deviation to this document, if
any.

C. Tasks:
1. Perform, review, validate and update the corrosion studies and corrosion management for all
operating cases or for any changes on operating cases and to produce detail Corrosion Design
Basis Memorandum (CDBM) documents and coordinate with the third party (if third party is
engaged) for the study.
2. Perform, review, validate, update and compile the essential data/information from the
documents i.e.:
a. Latest revision of production profile for all operating cases
b. Latest mass and heat balance
c. Latest chemical analysis of produced fluids (e.g. produced water analysis e.g. iron,
calcium, chloride, sulphate, carbonate, bicarbonate, total dissolved solids, specific
gravity, pH etc.)
d. Process Flow Diagram (PFD)
e. Piping and Instruments Drawings (P&ID)
f. Other related documents e.g. Design Basis Memorandum (DBM)
3. Identify and list down any missing data and discuss with client. If assumptions are to be made,
approval must be obtained from client. Prepare and populate an asset register, as per P&ID
using a template that allows direct import into PETRONAS Risk Based Inspection (P- RBI)
software
4. Identify and rank corrosion threats and mechanisms (internally and externally) e.g. CO2, H2S,
free sulphur, organic acids, mercury (Hg), sand, SCC, SSCC, HIC etc.
O2, Cl , MIC,
5. Evaluate the corrosion rates of the threats and calculate the Corrosion Allowance required
determining the minimum thickness required.
6. Identify and propose the materials selection of each item with justifications. The materials
selection shall be optimized to achieve minimum life cycle cost (minimum cost based on field
design life)
7. Identify and propose other corrosion mitigation/control requirements to each item with
justifications e.g.
a. Application of coatings (internal and external) and claddings
b. Chemical injection requirements such as corrosion inhibitor, biocide, oxygen
scavenger
c. Cathodic protection etc.
