ending being remarkable and
shocking allows one to identify
this Forbidden Zone as a reflection
of the result of nuclear
annihilation from the Cold War. In
the Cold War the procession of the
atomic bomb created fear and
paranoia within both the powers
resulting in The Arms Race that
became the focus of the Cold War.
In the film this destruction of
what is obviously New York, shows
what this nuclear warfare can do.
More over besides the Cold War,
there are strong views on the
Vietnam War. In the film when the
three men arrive to this mysterious
land Landon places a small American
Flag by the lake and Taylor
criticizes Landon for
volunteering into the space
program as if it was the military.
And Landon replies with doing it
for the glory you couldnt turn it
down without losing your allAmerican image. During the Vietnam
War 2/3 of the men serving were
volunteers, this ideal of fighting
for your country in a foreign
community is seen in that
particular scene that coincides
with the Vietnam War. Also even the
hunt scene it is connected as war
in a jungle just how the Vietnam
war mainly partook in; causing it
to be a war we cannot win in.
Moreover besides war, Planet of the

Apes also contains views on sexism
or just woman rights. This is shown
in the scene when Taylor states how
Dr. Stewart, being the only female
astronaut, was basically only a
breeder. She was our most precious
cargo says Taylor showing this
objectification towards woman and
even more so when Taylor states,
Stewart was to be our new Eve,
with our hot and eager help. This
implies that she was only going to
be useful to the three astronauts
as if she were some type of sex
object causing an exploitation
towards woman. Also the placement
of Nova being this beautiful, clean
being amongst the rest of the
humans in which they are mute shows
how she is seen as powerless. Being
controlled by Taylor, and her not
being able to talk and express
herself fluently allows Taylor to
be seen as dominating and taking
the rights of this woman away. To
continue, civil rights are
considered to be a class of rights
that protect individuals freedom
and ensures ones ability to
participate in civil life within
society without discrimination. The
entrapment of humans in cages being
treated unfairly and as animals in
this film shows how humans dont
have civil rights in this film and
how humans are seen as lower than
any race there. All in all,
counter-culture being defined as
any group whose beliefs, values and
attitudes differ from that of the
prevailing culture is also shown

within this film. In the scene when
they are in court this counter
culture is viewed upon men as Dr.
Honorious states that Taylor
doesnt know our culture, because
he cannot think. This shows the
difference they portray within the
humans and apes and how being a
human differentiates them from
being accepted into their culture.

Sound: This film Planet of the

Apes is more than the shoes on
the other foot kind of story. This
film portrays the racism and
stereotypical social values within
society. Throughout this film we
notice orangutans on top, the
chimps in between, and the gorillas
lower than the chimps and of course
the humans beneath them all. This
shows the racism within their own
community existing as a cast
system. Although it is somewhat a
shoe on the other foot as humans
are on the bottom. Since orangutans
are more political and religious
and are considered the defenders of
the faith they are on top and the
chimpanzees being scientific are
beneath, then the gorillas being
huge as placed as soldiers or in
other words in their military, then
at last humans being depicted as
uncultured are at the bottom of the
system. Not only is there racism or
stereotypical values in their own
community but also when Taylor is
at the hearing they ask to tell the

Articles of Faith but Taylor does
not know them hence them stating
that since he is human he does not
know their culture and he wont
understand. Similar to how
minorities are treated now if they
arent white. All in all this film
explores the race issues gravely.
