ASSIGNMENT

1.

A simply supported beam with a concentrated load acting on the midspan is

shown in fig. 1-9. If the mass of the beam is negligible compared to the mass
acting, find the natural frequency of the system.

2.

A manometer used in a fluid mechanics laboratory has a uniform bore of

cross-section area A. If a column of liquid of length L and density is set into
motion as shown in fig. 1-12, find the frequency of the resulting motion.

3.

An electric motor is supported by 4 springs, each having spring constant k

lb/in as shown in fig. 1-13. If the moment of inertia of the motor about the
central axis of rotation is J0, find its natural frequency of oscillation.

4.

A semicircular homogeneous disk of radius r and mass m is pivoted freely

about its center as shown in fig. 1-14. Determine its natural frequency of
oscillation for small displacements.

5.

Determine the natural frequency of the spring-mass-pulley system shown in

fig. 1-15.

6.

A simple pendulum is shown in fig. 1-17. Determine the natural frequency of

the swing, (a) if the mass of the rod is small compared to the mass at the end,
(b) if the mass of the rod is not negligible.

7.

A circular cylinder of mass m and radius r is connected by a spring of

modulus k as shown in fig. 1-23. If it is free to roll on the rough horizontal
surface without slipping, find its frequency.

8.

The homogeneous circular disc has a moment of inertia about its center equal
to 10 lb-in-sec2. At the static equilibrium position, both springs are stretched
one inch. Find the natural angular frequency of oscillation of the disc when it
is given a small angular displacement and released. K=10 lb/in.

9.

The mass of the slender uniform rod shown in fig. 1-26 below is small
compared to the mass attached to it. For small oscillations, calculate the
natural frequency of the swing of the mass.

10.

Use Rayleighs method to find the natural frequency of the semi-circular shell
of mass m and radius r which rolls from side to side without slipping as shown
in fig. 1-27 below.

11.

Use the Energy method to find the natural frequency of oscillation of the
homogeneous cylinder as shown in fig. 1-28 below.

12.

The cord can be assumed inextensible in the spring-mass-pulley system as

shown in fig. 1-29. Find the natural frequency of vibration if the mass m is
displaced slightly and released. Use the Energy method.

13.

The mass m is hanging from a cord attached to the circular homogeneous disc
of mass M and radius R ft, as shown in fig. 1-30. The disc is restrained from
rotating by a spring attached at radius r ft from the centre. If the mass is
displaced downward from the rest position, determine the frequency of
oscillation.

14.

The cylinder of mass m and radius r rolls without slipping on a circular

surface of radius R as shown in fig. 1-31 below. Determine the frequency of
oscillation when the cylinder is displaced slightly from its equilibrium
position. Use the Energy method.

15.

If the mass of the pulleys shown in fig. 1-32 above is small and the cord is
inextensible, find the natural frequency of the system.

16.

The mass m is attached to one end of a weightless stiff rod which is rigidly
connected to the center of a homogeneous cylinder of radius r as shown in fig.
1-33. If the cylinder rolls without slipping, what is the natural frequency of
oscillation of the system?

17.

Consider the push rod rocker and valve of engine valve system shown in fig.
2.11. The mass moment of inertia of the rocker about its axis is I, the masses
of valve and push rod are mv and mp respectively. The valve spring stiffness is
Ks and its mass is ms. The push rod can be replaced by a spring of equivalent
stiffness Kp. Determine the natural frequency of the system considering the
rocker and valve to be rigid.
