meanings dictionary and contextual, bet the two meanings stand in opposition to
each other: A man looked out of the window to see the storm intensify. He turned

There exist the following types of irony:
- Verbal irony;
- Situational irony
- Dramatic irony.
Verbal irony is used for expressing the opposite meaning that what is expected. A
very known form of verbal irony is sarcasm, when a speaker says one thing, but
means another:

And for I know thou rt full of love and honesty
And weighst thy words before thou givst them breath (From Othello by
William Shakespeare). Here we can see that lage makes Otello trust him and
because of that lago manipulates Otello. Audience knows about it, but Otello not.
Also we can find an irony in Romeo and Juliet, where Romeo thinks Juliet is
dead and the audience knows she is not.
Usually that stylistic device is found in horrors, the characters walk in the
darkness, but the audience knows there is a danger.
Situational irony is when something happens opposite to your expectation:
A pilot had a fear of heights.
The teacher failed the test.
Two people want a divorce and during the proceedings, discover they still love
each other and remarry.
A child runs away from someone throwing a water balloon at him and falls into the

pool.
An anti-technology website.
A man who needed of medical assistance is run over by the ambulance.
The police station gets robbed.
Irony is a very powerful tool, because it is used for attraction and catching
audiences attention. As the irony creates a contrast between two objects or
situations, it makes a curiosity. Irony emphasizes the situation and makes the
reader to be interested in it.

Sometimes irony can be found in sport article, because a writer wants to put
emphasize on a definite event.

Funny, then, that fans point all this pouting and outrage at actions they themselves
are responsible for. And by "they," I mean "you and me." Hypocrisy is a hell of a
