EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Livingstone College has a rich history of preparing its students to be global
leaders. Its alums have gone on to advance and achieve great success over
the years. As the college continues to pursue excellence in preparing its
students for the 21st century global society, a valuable resource is now
offering its rich reservoir of talents and capital to the college. The
Livingstone College National Alumni Association, led by its newly elected
president, Mrs. Delores M. Johnson, is teaming with The Holistic
College/Success Center, under the direction of Mrs. M. Stephanie Jones to
introduce the LCNAA Mentoring Project (LCNAAMP). The LCNAAMP will launch
in January 2016.
It is clear that this resource has been underutilized over the years, and is
critical in the colleges ability to move to the next level of success for its
students. The holistic model our current president, Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr.,
has brought to the school lends itself to enriching the educational experience
of the students outside the classroom. What better way of assisting students
in their growth than exposing them to alums who have attained success, and
who are willing to share their wisdom, experience, and resources?
LCNAAMP seeks to match mentors (alumni) with mentees (students) in oneon-one mentor-student relationships. The mentors will be matched with
students with like interests, such as common majors or from similar
backgrounds. This program has the potential to connect disengaged alumni,
expand LCNAA membership, create opportunities for alumni to engage in the
college regularly, constructively motivate students to achieve their fullest
potential, and bring to light the rich history of the schools past while
stimulating its bright future.
This project shall operate under the auspices of the Success Center. An
appointed Program Coordinator shall work with the LCNAA Oversight Board
to plan, organize, implement, monitor, and evaluate the outcome of the
program. In additon, the LCNAA Program Coordinator shall act as the single
point of contact between the College Program Coordinator and the LCNAA.
Working together, the college and LCNAA will make use of the rich reservoir
of untapped and underutilized alumni talents.

Overview
A. Introduction
The holistic college model was instituted at the college in 2006 upon the
arrival of Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr., and one of the key components is
mentoring. A student-to-student program, as well as a faculty/staff
mentoring program are being utilized, and this new project will give alumni
an awesome opportunity to contribute to the college in a new way. Many
alums have enjoyed successful careers in many settings in society, forming a
rich reservoir of untapped and underutilized resources that are vital to
advancing the life of the college, and educating global students.
B. Description -5 Stage Mentoring Process
Multi-generational diversity is the most current approach to addressing student
needs through mentoring. Successful implementation of the project will
provide an empowering interactive experience for both the mentors and the
mentees. The LCNAAMP is a five-step mentoring program that includes (1)
selection of mentors and mentees, (2) matching the mentor with a mentee,
(3) setting up the initial meeting of the two, (4) recording on-going contacts
between the mentor and mentee, and (5) Evaluating the success of the
matches through both objective and subjective measures.
C. Objectives
The LCNAAMP intends to:
Provide effective mentors to assist students in achieving Satisfactory
Academic Progress based on the student catalog.
Foster inspiration and motivation through frequent and consistent
communication, meetings, workshops, and seminars.
Teach students personal responsibility and provide professional development.
C. Mentor Selection
Potential mentors should complete the mentoring interest form found
in the LCNAA newsletter, contact the LCNAA Program Manager or their
local alumni chapter. All mentors shall be selected by the LCNAA
Oversight Board and must complete a volunteer pack from the college,
submit an application and resume.
D. Mentee Selection
Mentees shall be selected through the office of the mentoring
coordinator of the Success Center. Nominations for mentees shall be
sought through Learning Community Advisors. Potential mentees shall
submit an application that includes a statement of need identifying
academic goals, career plans, and general expectations of the mentormentee relationship and process.
E. Matching Mentors to Mentees
The Project Coordinator shall confer with the LCNAA Program
Manager and Learning Community Advisors to match mentors to
mentees. Majors, common interests, gender, professional
backgrounds, and personalities shall be used in matching mentors
with mentees.
G. Evaluation
The mentor and mentee shall complete and submit a final written
evaluation of the mentor-mentee experience to the program
coordinator at the end of the academic year. These evaluations
shall be reviewed, and an ongoing file shall be maintained. The
Program Coordinator shall make any needed adjustments to
pairing.
