If you open the silver box, it surprises you with the bright light radiated from
white porcelain. Kim, Heejongs work with contrasting finishes in and outside
of white porcelain tableware makes you curious about the art of the artist.
His persistency to study various ceramic techniques and communicate with
his audience while try not to ignore practicality at the same time paid off by
being introduced at 2014 Craft Trend Fair.

craftsman
moon, yoojin
Bachi is pure Korean word for craftsman. It refers to a person who devotes
to his/her life to being authentic professional despite they used to belong to
lowest class. Moon, Yoojin decided to succeed such spirit even considering it as
calling and fortune. She has faith as a person who started life as crafter to do
knotting and lacquer after leaving her life as a designer, which she spent half of
her life. She believes that if one accumulates one more knot and one more layer
of lacquer, one good thing can come out of it the same as Jo, Hoonhyun, the
famous go player, continued one move after another and became a master.

KIM, JUIL
If you are planning to learn about the
art of Kim, Juil, first thing to do is to
raise your level of curiosity. Dresser
that has a clock on a face panel,
bookshelf that moves up and down
along the spiral, transformer sofa that
hides coffee table inside, etc., they
are the things made out of curiosity
and imagination. It is said that his
works are the crystallization of the
compulsion that you want to touch
them with your bare hand when you
look closely.

You would wonder who on earth made this brusque jar with concrete. But it is a
ceramic object built with ceramic tiles that were born in grey earth. Engraving
edition numbers on each tile like a signature stamp, ceramist Bae, Sejin record
the time of his own. It was foreign collectors who recognized his work that
allows us to realize the how various the spectrum craft object can be.

Lee, Zeesoo has created Fliessen series since six years ago. Fliessen is a
German word for flow. While it refers to flowing pattern that two or more
colors are mixed, but it also denotes psychological state in which one is
immersed into something enough to forget time flows. Her traditional
porcelain is contemporary expression of her passion, energy and juissance that
spring up when she immerses into her work.

Theme Section,
<Temperature 36.5>
The difference between craft and fine arts such as painting or sculpture
is that it has purpose. They are not the objects for watching while being
03
kept in cabinets, but the objects to be used in life. There are saying that
craft acquires meaning only when it meets with human. This section of the
exhibition examines such essential nature of craft that are often forgotten.

<Constancy &
Change in Korean
Traditional Craft>
<Texture>
This exhibition is hosted by National Intangible
Heritage Center. The show paired the eight
holders of Koreas Important Intangible Cultural
Property status with sixteen successors of
traditional craft mastery taught by the holders.
They presented contemporary reinterpretation
of Koreas traditional crafts that are on the
verge of distinction. By adapting traditional
craft to the contemporary sense and use,
this thankful show exhibited tradition can be
inherited and continued today.

Korean Craft Exhibition at
Milano Design Week & 2014 Collect in London
text by Sung, Hayoung
Last April and May, loud applauds were shown in Italy and
England, the worlds center of art and culture. The applauds were
directed to <Constancy & Change in Korean Traditional Craft
2014> in Milano Design Week with venues all around the city.
This event is in conjunction with worlds largest exhibition, Milano
International Furniture Expo that attracts more than 300,000
audience every year. Another one is <2014 Collect> that is an
international art object fair hosted by British Craft Council. Both
exhibitions were Koreas second participation and Korea had
even better result than last year.

enough designers in this country. The concept of design crosses over to other disciplines. It is
the era of Gold Rush for design indeed. Those who appreciate the importance of design are our
potential customers. If we can introduce good designers and their products well enough, there
will be more regular customers who appreciate the products and buy them. If more designers
participated in this with us, what we are dreaming here can quite possibly come true.
What is your mission and how you want to get there? I want people to feel that there is nothing
we cannot do here. A place no restricted rule on what to do and how, a place you can restart even
after failure, and a place where you can share the joy of success together, I want this place to be like
that. www.boboostore.com

Soseng Industrial Complex is abbreviation for small-scale (so) manufactures (seng) Industrial
Complex. We came about from the interest in; who are small-scale manufacturers (soseng) with craft
mans creative mind and devotion; and what kind of things they make. It was also the starting point
of the Complex when we decided to do something helpful for promoting and selling their products.
We had discussion on which format will be effective to persuading customers and came up with the
storytelling of producer because how the producer have grown up and what kind of thoughts do
they have can be explored through interviews. First, we look for a good producer and write interview
articles and product reviews.
Wish sosengs to soseng
I have mobilized all channels in order to find artists hidden in shadows so to speak. Though we
get recommendation from acquaintance, finding artists needs legwork. We have a section in the
homepage that devotes to soseng that we found and introduced. We also have section, called
Soseng-ro(ad) for registered producer members to open their own online market like an open market.

What does Supply Seoul mean? It means to supply something. However, it is not something grand
or anything. Without grand purpose or mission, Supply Seoul came out of the questions like what
an artist living in Seoul can supply to other friend artists? It was only fortunate and timely that we
had means and condition earlier than we anticipated to start this, a kind of cultural project under the
name, Supply Seoul.
What does Supply Seoul do? I never made rules. But if I need to show you some structure, it can
be said to organize and supply with all things that can be done at a certain space in various formats.
For example, communication, sharing thoughts, seminar, developing cultural project, exhibition, and
performance are organized. To put it simpler term, what we are trying to do is more or less to supply
support with minimized restriction that once institutions or space have imposed on artist or designer
when they want to show their work and supply a space and opportunity in which they can show their
ideas and their full potential. We are on a stage that is too premature to define who we are. Time will
tell. Also, I think what needs to all artists seem to be archiving.
Who are the artist friends who have been supplied through Supply Seoul so far? Supply Seoul
is not formal organization so that artists are not bound by any representation system like commercial
galleries or by-laws of a cooperation, which is the hot issue now a days. There is no fund for the
artists in the program. Only that we want to give is a little help for various artists and designers and
their work.
If one wants to get supply from Supply Seoul, how the person should knock on your door?
So far, the list of people in the program is made up by my personal preference or by discussion with
friends. If anyone is steady with their work, I believe they would get chance to present their work not
only here at Supply Seoul but also even better place. www.supplyseoul.kr
