MC Engines
Built-on Power Take Off Gear
Dear Sirs,
A number of MC engines of the 42-90 cm bore types are provided with a Power
Take Off or Power Take In gearbox built directly on to the front end of the
engine. Examples of these are the PTO BWIII/RCF (please see Encl. 1), the
PTO/BWIII/GCR, and the TCS/PTI.
In one case a crankcase explosion has been experienced, initiated by a failure of
the bearing that carries the output shaft in the gearbox. The crankcase space and
the space inside the gearbox have until now been considered as being isolated
from each other. However, the mentioned explosion demonstrates that the small
gaps in the gearbox construction are enough to connect the atmospheres of the
crankcase and the gearbox.
In view of the above-mentioned incident, we recommend that, for safety reasons,
all such gearboxes built onto our MC engines are connected to the oil mist
detector system as described in the enclosed step-by-step installation guideline.

Installation Guideline
for
Connecting the Oil Mist Detector on MC type Engines
to a built-on Power Take Off or Power Take In gearbox

Important: In the following, care must be taken to ensure that no foreign substances
enter the gearbox when the inspection cover is not in place. We recommend that all
bolts and tools are kept beneath the top of the gearbox housing as long as the
inspection cover is not in place.
1. Select a suitable location on the gearbox inspection cover for the installation of
an air sample suction pipe. Please refer to the guidelines in Encl. 2.
2. Remove the inspection cover from the gearbox .
3. Check by taking measurements that the proposed pipe location is feasible.
4. Drill a hole in the inspection cover for the bulkhead coupling.
Important: The cover must be dismantled during drilling.
5. Important: Remove all burrs and carefully clean the inspection cover.
6. Mount the bulkhead coupling on the cover.
7. Mount the air sample suction T-pipe on the rear of the cover.
Important: The air inlets at the ends of the suction T-pipe must be placed away from
the gear lubricating oil spray, and the pipe must not be installed in parallel with
the gear wheels (i.e. the suction T-pipe must be placed in parallel with the
crankshaft centreline). The location and direction of the oil spray can be seen
with the main engine stopped and the main engine lubricating oil pump running.
8. Remount the cover on the gearbox.
9. Connect the air sample suction pipe to the coupling on the gearbox cover.
10. Connect the new suction pipe to a spare channel in the oil mist detector or to an
additional oil mist detector. Please refer to Encl. 3.
