BARRYTON — Since early Febrero,
the biblioteca in Barryton is offering
clases de español for los residentes
locales. In translation, Barryton
residents have been taking Spanish
classes from 5 to 6 p.m. since early
February at the Barryton Public
Library. “We’re working hard at
it,” said Barryton Library Director
Marcia Laughlin, who also sits in
on the class. “We all seem to be
progressing at the same rate ... We’re
rookies.” The class is working on
the basics of the language such as
the alphabet and verbs, as well as
learning conversational phrases that
are practical. The focus is to make
the introductory class engaging for
adults. “We wanted to do something
for the adults,” Laughlin said. “It’s
absolutely my favorite hour of the
week.” The class is taught by Shawn
Briggle, a retired librarian who not
only speaks fluent Spanish but a little
German as well. All the students
think that he is an excellent educator,
Laughlin said. “They’re very good
students,” Briggle said. “They’re
very interested (in the language).
(Spanish) is the second most spoken
language ... It’s useful to know.” The
class starts off with a review of what
was learned in the previous week,
then a new lesson is taught and at the
end of class, homework is assigned
from a book each student has. The
language is relatively difficult to
learn, especially for adults who have
to wrap their minds around new
pronunciations of the same alphabet,
Laughlin said. “I am an ultra-rookie,”
student Bruce Sanger said. “It’s
frustrating for me. Fortunately we
have a great teacher.” Sanger, along
with his wife, Sherry, take the class
on a fairly regular basis. Bruce Sanger
said that he has never attempted to
learn a foreign language before and it
is hard to wrap his 64-year-old mind
around the new concepts. When he
can’t make it to a class, or when he can
not quite grasp a concept, he said he
relies on his wife to baby him through
it. “I not only have to go to the class,
I have to come home and tutor him,”
Sherry Sanger said. Although many
people have quit the program since
its inception, there are four to five
die-hards who are attempting to learn
a new language, Laughlin said. “I
persevere even though I’m slow,”
Bruce Sanger said. “My mind has not
been taught since college. You get
cobwebs up there.” Although classes
are eight weeks in and will end for the
summer with the library’s summer
reading program, Laughlin said that
anyone is invited to come and sit in,
especially if they want a refresher in
any Spanish they already know. For

Despite Tough Economy,
Americans Remain Loyal To
Their Pets
(NAPSI)-Americans love their pets
and will do what they can to keep
their faithful companions happy
and healthy--whatever state the
economy is in. That’s what a recent
survey by the American Pet Products
Association found. The study revealed
that: • The current economic situation
has had little negative impact on their
decision to own a pet, according to 70
percent of America’s pet owners. •
In fact, more than 80 percent of pet
owners report that they have not
changed their spending patterns
and continue to spend the same on
their pet during these times. • Even
62 percent of horse owners, one of
the most costly pets to maintain,
report that the economy has not
influenced their pet ownership.
In fact, 5 percent of horse owners
reported spending more on their pet
during this same time. • Interestingly,
even those households with income
levels under $25K and between
$25 and $50K report that to a large
degree--57 percent and 67 percent,
respectively--their ownership levels
have remained unchanged despite
the economy. While the pet sector
enjoyed a steady stream of spending,
American pet owners compensated
by reducing spending on other
household and leisure items. Across
the board, there was a reported
decline in spending on activities
including movies, plays, museums,
sporting events, travel, dining and
even shopping. These findings
suggest that Americans will readily

reallocate their dollars to maintain

information further demonstrates that
pet owners will continue to cut back
in their personal lives before scaling
back on their four-legged friends,”

primary reason that the pet industry
