February

One of the advantages that we have over

many if not all jazz clubs is that we have two
rooms to play with. And quite different ones
at that. The look and feel of the top room is
more casual compared to the main club,
smaller too. This variety gives us licence to
book it completely differently, which means
we are able to satisfy more of the people
who want to come to hear jazz here. Jazz
after all, has no age barriers, certainly our
audience spans several age groups. Upstairs
at Ronnies, as it was always known, is able
to feature younger home grown players on
a regular basis whilst in the main room we
continue to book the more established jazz
stars from around the world.

A change for the new year Upstairs at Ronnies

is a now weekly Thursday residency being
taken up by the W3 Jam Sessions, a rotating
posse of musicians who play the most exciting
jazz funk jam in town. They have been monthly
for a while now but we felt that a new weekly
slot would complement the long standing
straight ahead jazz jam we run on
Wednesdays (now legendary if you believe
Andy Davies who runs it). Both these nights
allow players to sit in (youd better be pretty
good!) attracting many music students from
the great London colleges. Both nights are
vibrant celebrations of live jazz at its best and I
could not recommend them more highly,
especially to all of you giving jazz a fresh look
in the new year.

One of the jazz world's great legacy orchestras - great,

because it doesn't just clone the music of its original
inspiration but interprets it in its own ways. The Guardian

MINGUS BIG BAND

trumpet: Tatum Greenblatt, Philip Harper, Alex Norris. saxophones: Abraham Burton,
Wayne Escoffery, Mark Gross, Brandon Wright, Ronnie Cuber, trombones: Chris Bates,
Luis Bonilla, Earl McIntrye. drums: Donald Edwards. bass: Boris Kozlov. piano: Theo Hill.
After the last three years acclaimed sold-out runs, which The Times noted was "The most exhilarating
night of the year", we welcome the return to Ronnies of arguably the greatest big band of them all and
probably our favourite week at the club. Indeed there are few sounds in jazz as exciting as the
rambunctious, hard-swinging 14 piece Mingus Big Band. But then there have been few musicians and
composers as dynamic and driven as the great, late Charles Mingus, who died in 1979. During his own
lifetime the great composer often struggled to keep a big band together and although his small group
recordings are amongst the greatest in jazz it was always the voicings of the larger ensemble that Mingus
wrote for. This, then, is a unique chance to hear some of the most exciting music in jazz - heard how the
composer wanted. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, the Mingus Big Band appear at Ronnies for
twelve shows in six nights in what will be some of the Autumns hottest tickets. And with a huge repertoire
the band pride themselves on playing a different set every night so no two shows are ever the same.

We caught up the great Mr Boris Kozlov (lead bass player of the Mingus Big Band for the last 18 years)
as he took some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few of our Ronnies questions:

1.

2.

3.
4.
5.

6.

Boris, its a complete honour to host MBB back at Ronnies for its annual residency, considered
by many people as our best week of the year! The band is always known to bring a fresh
repertoire, what can we expect to hear from MBB in 2016? We'll try to combine true

(Mingus) classics with stuff still being discovered and arranged by Sy or myself!

How does it feel to be the bass player leading this historic Mingus band and continuing the legacy
of one of jazz musics greatest ever bass players and composers ? Honestly, it feels natural

(after 18 years!). A big point for me is that I can totally be myself within
Mingus' reality, like all the other guys in the band - we value that freedom.
What is the importance of Mingus music ? Nobody else writes like this; it gives you a
feeling of never knowing what comes next (i.e. real life)
To those who were never privileged to meet Charles Mingus, tell us what kind of man he was ?

He was many different men, I gather, but he was I think a family man first.

Thats good to hear! Are there any modern day musicians (in any genre) that you consider
to stand in comparison with Charles Mingus in terms of their charisma, musical ambition,
depths of composition etc. In a word, nope! This is a different time (era) and

different songs...

New York is the spiritual home of the band, do you still consider the Big Apple the creative
hub of jazz music ? So far it still is, but the economy of it might change the

scene one day and it will be elsewhere. Itll be wherever musicians gather.

February

A special concert
celebrating the
ongoing legacy
of the National
Youth Jazz
Orchestra (NYJO)
and its founder
Bill Ashton OBE.

Born in Brussels of Anglo-Egyptian parentage,

singer and world music star Natacha Atlass
multi-cultural background and experiences
have helped shape her trademark sound
which seamlessly bridges musical and culture
divides. Natachas pioneering meld of Western
and Eastern music, specifically her use of
cutting-edge electronic beats with Arabic
melodies and instrumentation has garnered
her a huge and loyal following. Here performing
material from her excellent new album Myriad
Road a seamless mixture of contemporary jazz
and Arabic vocals.

Multi-instrumentalist Khan is notable for his ability

to fuse traditional jazz with contemporary styles
and sounds - involved in the broken beat scene,
leader of SK Radicals and involved with Bugz in the
Attic collective. Sean and the band perform tracks
from his sophomore LP Muriel - representing a
journey back to the jazz improvisation that Khan
first fell in love with, here tonight with two very
special guest vocalists Heidi Vogel (Cinematic
Orchestra) and UK Neo-soul icon Omar.
