Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we wrap up this edition of Our
Towne Ballston Spa, it is safe to say
“Spring has Sprung” and change is in
the air. The weather is gorgeous and it
is certainly very easy to be inspired to be
outdoors!
We are embarking on our 3-year an-
niversary and the time has simply flown by.
Businesses and events have come and gone, neighbors have
left and new friends have emerged. It is with fresh excitement,
each edition, that we look to serve this community and weave
together the businesses, with their neighbors, with the events,
that make our community rich with spirit.
Trout fishing season started and the Kids’ Creekside Village is
now open for play! Sure signs that we’re not too far away from
concerts and films outside in Wiswall Park...
What a great time to get out and walk the Tedisco Fitness
Trail, carefully maintained by volunteer groups such as After the
Fire and of course, the Ballston Spa House and Garden Club
whose founding members, Jean Puckhaber and Mary Ortoleva
will be honored this month.
Green is the theme! Be sure to keep your papers recycling
into the special dumpsters located at each BSCSD school,
the bus garage and behind St. Mary’s School, too! Watch for
news about the upcoming creek clean-up by Friends of the
Kayderosseras and I haven’t heard yet, but I’m sure there will be
another Arbor Day Tree Planting ceremony this month.
Lots of fresh air to enjoy and a great Spring and Summer sea-
son to look forward to...see you around town, Our Towne!

Warm Regards,
Angela McFarland

ing day of Trout Season. The weather perfect afternoon
at Rock City Falls shows the waterfall in all its glory, first
used to power the saw and grist mills located there before
the 1800’s. An important reminder: everyone 16 years old
and over needs a valid fishing license to fish on any of New
York’s waters. While children do not require a fishing license,
adults who assist a child in taking or attempting to take fish,
are considered to be fishing themselves, and therefore need to have a valid
fishing license. Cover Photo courtesy of David Pleniazek

due to the use of tobacco products. It is well documented
that lifestyle choices really, truly make a difference, but so
many people continue their unhealthy habits and then seem
surprised when they’re diagnosed with some form of cardiovascular disease.
High cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and tobacco
use are all risk factors associated with heart disease. Tobacco product use
increases blood pressure, decreases exercise tolerance and increases the
tendency for blood to clot, so it’s very bad for the cardiovascular system.
And secondhand smoke has been found to be dangerous, too. Research
shows that people who stop tobacco use before age 50 can cut their risk How to Feed a Lawn

Once you have the proper setting on the calibrator, it is time to start
feeding the lawn.
Make Header Strips Feeding the lawn is as simple as mow-

lawn. Watch the swath (the area where the application is broadcast)
and make sure the granules fall on the lawn, and avoid getting it in
gardening beds, driveways and sidewalks.
Feed the Rest of the Lawn Turn the spreader to "on" and start
walking, and turn it "off" when you reach the area of your header

again, just be sure to turn if off as close as you can to where you
already applied the product. Continue going back and forth across
the entire lawn.
For broadcast spreaders, the swatch should overlap a previous pass
by a few inches. For a drop spreader, follow the wheel marks from a
previous pass.
Once you reach the end of the lawn, turn the spreader off and return
any remaining product to the bag.

Natural Foods That Protect

Dogs From Parasites
How to Organically Control Dog Fleas, Worms
and Other Pests
Fleas, worms and ticks are the most common parasites dog owners
contend with, and while there is a cornucopia of commercial prod-
ucts to deal with these issues, they are not for everyone. Not every
pet owner wishes to subject their dogs to the potentially harmful
side effects of chemicals.
Dog Health and Parasites
April 20th The first consideration for a dog with parasites is diet. Dogs fed only
de-natured, commercial pet food can suffer from parasites due to
poor nutrition.
Parasites, by nature, find their greatest host source to be an animal
that is in ill health, and the first and best defense against parasites
is a healthy body. A dog achieves a healthy body through a diet rich
in whole food nutrients. Commercial pet food, particularly kibble, is
void of anything fresh or raw and is filled with undesirable ingredi-
ents dogs should avoid, like the excessive fluoride in the bone meal
common in commercial pet food.
Grains are another unhealthful culprit in commercial dog food. Most
skin problems in dogs can be corrected by removing all grains from
a dog’s diet. Dogs do not need, and are often harmed by, grains. A
dog’s short digestive tract is not intended to process field grains.
A diet rich in raw, whole, fresh dog-appropriate foods helps to build
the animal’s immune system and ward off parasitic infestation.

Adopting Safe and Sane Canine Parasite

Prevention and Resolution
The five steps to optimal parasite-free health are:
A healthy, raw diet as close to organic as possible with unlimited
fresh water
Natural pest control from Mother Nature’s bountiful resources
Attention to natural grooming with clean living quarters
Diligent research and education
The regular use of a flea comb
One key to determining how much of any food source to use is to
begin small and increase dosage until results are achieved. However,
one individual clove per day is generally the garlic maximum for a
medium to large dog, less for smaller dogs.
Dogs can lead healthy, happy lives without incurring adverse con-
sequences from harsh chemical solutions that spawn damaging,
sometimes deadly, side effects. Adverse effects from chemicals are
not always readily apparent and may manifest as multiple diseases
weeks, months or even years after the dog has been exposed.
A homeopathic or holistic vet can help steer dog owners with an
interest in natural canine health toward a chemical-free existence.
Every dog deserves a healthy life free of harmful parasites, but trad-
ing the parasites for cures that harm does not have to be the answer.
