Planning and layout

When planning the layout of the ceiling, certain requirements
may have to be taken into consideration.
A demand for a symmetrical layout in all or some of the
rooms, the location of light fittings, ventilation units etc. may
be decisive for the choice of layout.
When no such special requirements exist, the layout that
gives minimum waste and cutting of ceiling tiles shall be
chosen.

On this basis the following procedure is recommended:

a. The grid system, module 600 x 600 mm is marked on a
drawing 1:25 or 1:50 as shown on the drawing above. Light
fittings, ventilation etc. can also be marked on the drawing.
This drawing will serve as quantity take-out and guide for
the installation of the TNF ceiling.
b. To achieve minimum waste follow these layout directions:
- room width 2400 mm (measured from inside wall to inside
wall) equals 4 pieces 600 x 600 mm tiles.
- room width 2500 mm consumes: 1 tile cut to 300 x 600
mm, 3 tiles 600 x 600 mm and 1 tile cut to 400 x 600
mm.

- room width 2600 mm consumes: 1 tile cut to 300 x 600

mm.

280

- room width 2900 mm consumes: 4 tiles 600 x 600 mm

and 1 tile cut to 500 x 600 mm.
The other half of the cut unit is used in the next room, which
means no wastage.
For the room widts from 3000 mm to 3600 mm exactly
same pattern as 2400 mm to 3000 mm wil appear except
for one tile 600 x 600 mm to be added.
Where a symmetrical layout is required the tile pattern must
be set around the center line in the room. This gives tiles of
same dimension along opposite walls.
If the ceiling tiles has a directional pattern, the directional
marks on the tiles can be used to ensure proper installation
of the tiles in the grid system. The directional marks on the
tiles is identified by small dents along two edges of the tile.
The cut-off pieces can only be used on parallel wal edges.
Any tile can be turned 180 degrees.

Quantity take-out
When the grid system is marked on the drawing for each
room, the quantity take-out can be done simply by adding
up the number of various parts of the grid system.
When specifying the ceiling please observe the following:

A. Ceiling tiles
specifications on the ceiling tiles must include the following:
- Ceiling colour
choose colour from Colour Chart for TNF Ceilings.
- Number of tiles
(size 600 x 600 mm)

4) Cover profile TNF 619

Room circumference divided by 2.4, gives the exact number
of pieces. The figure can also be found by adding up to total
linear meters of top profile flanges. (lining: single flange,
partition walls: double flanges).
5) felt, TNF 610
Remember also to include this in the specification.
See fig. D

C. Spare tiles and profiles

B. Grid system
Specifications on the grid system must include the following
information:

The quantities of ceiling tiles and grid system parts calculated

should be increased to make provision for damages which
may occur during the installation. The quantities of spare
tiles and parts to be added are individual and should be
based on prior experience.

- The number of pieces required of each part in the grid

system.

D. Approximate quantities
- The colour of the grid system (if nothing is stated, the grid
system will be supplied in standard white).
1) Carrier, TNF 611
The exact quantity can be calculated by adding up total lin.
m. divided by 3.6 (the length of each carrier).
An allowance of an average of 2% to be added to the quantity calculated. This to allow for proper alignment of the cross
bars and corect distance from top profile to first cross bar.

It is recommended when doing the quantity take-out to write

the figures on the drawings for each room. This will also
simplify the installation work later on.

2) Cross bar, TNF 612

These can be calculated exactly from the drawing. Note that
the cut-of pieces can be used at the next row.
3) Hanger, TNF 614,615,616,617,618 and 613
The length of the upper-part must be stated according to the
diagram on page 2. The upper part of the hanger in various
lengths other than standard is available.
Please state distance from steel deck to surface of ceiling or
give length of upper part.

TNF Ceilings C46

Installation procedure
Step 1: Carriers - Fig. A
These are placed parallel to the length of the room and
spaced 600 mm apart so that the required ceiling tile
layout is achieved.
The total length of each carrier should be equal to the free
distance between the walls less 10 mm (5 mm free space
at each end).
Two carriers are joined by a special tongue system which
locks the profiles when pushed together .
Ensure that the locking is correct and that the two profiles
are alligned completely.
When installing the carriers, it is important to ensure that
the holes for the cross bars have the preplanned distance
to the insides of the top profiles, so that the cross bars can
be installed correctly and according to layout.

Fig. A

Step 2: Hangers - Fig. B

The carriers are suspended from the deckhead by means
of adjustable hangers. These consist of three parts: an
upper and lower part, and a lock-pin.
The hangers must not be spaced more than 1200 mm
apart, and max. 600 mm away from a TNF top profile.
The lower part is slid into position on the carrier from
the end of the carrier profile before it is lifted up and
attached to the upper part. Select an upper part of the
correct length (see page 2 for the available lengths). This
is welded or screwed to the deckhead at a position directly
over the lower part. The overall length of the hanger is
adjusted for the required ceiling height by means of the
lock-pin which hoIds the two parts together .

Fig. B

Step 3: Cross bars - Fig. C

The cross bars are fitted at right angles to the carriers,
ensuring that the correct hole is used.
The cross bar must be positioned so that they will fit the
ceiling tiles.
Each hole in the carrier is shaped to accommodate two
cross bars inserted from opposite sides.
The cross bar should be fitted making sure they are in
allignment.

Step 4: Pop riveting - Fig. D

Both the carriers and the cross bars are then secured to the
top profile flanges by means of pop rivets.
A piece of felt is placed between the carriers/cross bars
and the top profile flange.

Step 5: Cover profile

To give the visible part of the top profile - i.e. the flange - a
decorative surface, install the cover profile - TNF 619.

Step 6: Ceiling tiles

Finally the tiles are placed in the grid system.
