For [Filipinos], the New Year celebration is never complete

without firecrackers. Firecrackers make them happy [and some]
will just stop if they experience accidents.
Children injured
[by firecracker] blasts usually develop trauma.
The PNP, DOH and other government agencies had tried
to push the regulation on the use of strong firecrackers but their
records showed that even harmless
sparklers like "luces,"
Roman candle and fountain have become sources of injuries.
This primer will provide tips on how to use firecrackers
properly and encourage the public to use the firecrackers in a
way to enjoy the holiday season safe.

What are fireworks?

Pyrotechnics, commonly known as
that provide

fireworks, are explosives

spectacular displays of Light, color and sound.

For many people, fireworks play an important part in family

celebrations and holidays. But because they are designed to
burn and explode, fireworks are also a leading cause of injury.
The DOH said that piccolo, five star, pla-pla and boga are
among the top 10 firecrackers which caused the injuries.
The four illegal firecrackers accounted for 43.4 percent of the
714 firecracker-related injuries reported by 50 sentinel hospitals
nationwide from 6 a.m. of Dec. 21, 2014 to 6 a.m. of Jan. 3.
Piccolo had the most cases at 247, followed by five star with 26,
pla-pla with 22 and boga with 15.

How to Choose Safe Fireworks.

Stay away from illegal explosives.
It is very important to know the difference
between a legal
consumer firework and a dangerous explosive device. Republic
Act (RA) 7183 bans the following firecrackers: big
triangle,
super lolo and equivalents, mother rockets, five star, og, pla-pla,
pillbox, watusi and firecrackers without labels, among others.
they are banned explosives that can cause serious injury or
even death.

DONT MAKE FIREWORKS AT HOME.

Homemade fireworks are deadly. Never attempt to
make your own devices, and do not purchase or use
any kits that are advertised for making fireworks. Mixing and loading chemical powders is very dangerous
and can kill or seriously injure you.

Only adults should handle fireworks. Tell children that they should
leave the area immediately if their friends are using fireworks.
Discuss safety procedures with your children. Teach children to "stop,
drop and roll" if their clothes catch on fire. Make sure they know how
to emergency hot lines. Show them how to put out fireworks with water or a fire extinguisher in case it poses threat. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
Read labels and carefully follow directions. All fireworks must carry
warning labels describing necessary safety precautions.

The following safety tips are encourage for those

who cannot avoid using firecrackers:
Do not hold fireworks while lighting them. Use the
lighted end of a stick instead; use only small and
less dangerous types of fireworks.
Light only one device at a time; ignite fireworks
outdoors, away from houses and flammable
substances.
Parents should not allow young
fireworks of any kind.

children to use

Older children permitted to use fireworks should

be kept under the close
supervision of
adults.
Do not alter
fireworks in any way; do not pick
up or relight
fireworks or pyrotechnics that
failed to ignite. Soak them in water and throw
them away.
Do not bend directly over pyrotechnic devices like
ground displays such as fountains.
Don't light fireworks while under the influence of
liquor; and do not allow
children to play with
watusi as it is poisonous and could kill.

Never use fireworks indoors.

Be sure spectators are out of range

before lighting fireworks.

Never aim or throw fireworks at another person.

Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them off in a metal or
glass
container.
Light fireworks only on smooth, flat
surfaces, away from houses,
dry leaves and other flammable materials.

Health officials warned the public on the use of firecrackers

because many of these contain ingredients, such as horse
manure, that carry the tetanus virus.

Health experts said reports reaching them showed that some

manufacturers mix dried horse manure with other
chemicals to
make the firecrackers explode louder.
Some manufacturers use
manure because it is cheaper
than chemicals used in their business.
Manufacturers have been using horse manure in almost all
[types of] firecrackers for a long time because they want to save
money. If these firecrackers explode in your hands, you will
not only be hurt, but you will get tetanus
Horse manure contains nitrate found in explosive materials. Horse manure is used in most firecrackers but larger
amounts are found in cheaper firecrackers such as the "Five
Star," "Two Star" and "One Star,"
