Introduction
1.0 Introduction to Industrial Training
An industrial training in my point of view is a probationary period for a fresh graduate to
enter the corporate world, or it can be seen as an opportunity to increase the likelihood of a
permanent employment by the company where he or she is practicing their internship. This is
because Industrial Training refers to platform whereby the work experiences that are relevant to
the course taken in university are practiced. Students are given opportunity to apply the theories
and the lesson learned hands on in a real organization.
Thus, Industrial training is made compulsory to all third year student who are about to go
into fourth year and the final year of degree. Upon acceptance of the organization, a formal letter
from the university will be given to the organization to notify about internship program and a
reply letter from the organization to the university is send as an approval of acceptance.
Not only that, the internship period is 3 months and students have to prepare a final report to
wrap up their experiences during the 3 months. This is to ensure, that student participate actively
and fully utilize the time given to develop them and at the same time to avoid students from
attempting to fraud the university. As for their grades, which is pass or fail, students will be
evaluated based on their commitment at work and the output of the industrial training which will
be written in a report form.

1.1 Industrial Training Objectives

To expose students to the working world, so that they gain experience and understanding
of job through coaching and guidance from the organization.

To introduce students to the working world, particularly in the field of engineering

To expose students to the experience and knowledge that cannot be obtained in

classroom

Roles and Responsibilities

3.0 Factory Acceptance Test
FAT is one of the first tasks given to me as an intern in SCA. It was a test where the client
visited my company to witness how the fire alarm system works. It was a brief test where the
modules and detectors were arranged and connected in a circuit which was according to the
layout of the factory. My role was to assemble the components in one of the layout according to
the schematic diagram given by my supervisor. This is where I attached the detectors and
modules to the circuit board and also connecting each of it with wires to create a circuit. Lastly, it
was presented to the client by my supervisors.

3.1 Mimic Drawings

Mimic drawings were drawings drawn by the architect for a certain building which SCA is
involved in doing the buildings fire alarm system. Basically, a mimic drawing is where SCA will
use the drawing to determine where to place the modules, detectors and devices in a building
layout. This drawing is later edited and printed on Perspex to be placed in every floor of a
building with LEDs attached to it. This is also to show where the fire exit is and an intercom is
placed, so that in a fire situation it will be an easier way for people to escape. My role was to edit
the drawing by changing the colors of the detectors and as well the fire exit. I also removed
unwanted components of the drawings in the mimic to make the drawing focus on fire related
locations.

3.2 Comparison Tables

I was given the task to create a table consist of other fire alarm systems in the market. This
task was to find out what other fire alarm system companies have in their fire alarm system. By
doing a detail research, most of the information was obtained to create a table of comparison
which compared other products to my companys product.

3.3 Updating the Companys Product Catalogue and Manuals

This task was just to make sure the companys catalogues and the manuals of the products
were up to date. I just updated the catalogues and manuals by replacing the old ones with the
new ones by downloading from the suppliers website archive.

3.4 Catalogue Making

Catalogue making was a task where, when a project is completed the company will hand
over to the main contractor by educating them on how the product works and how to handle the
products. The catalogue was printed and arranged by us and later it was filed according to the
sections before it was taken to the site to handover to the main contractor by the project
engineers in SCA.

3.5 Built of Quantity

The last role or responsibility I had is to count the amount of detectors, modules,
components and devices which is placed in an architecture drawing. The amount is calculated
and later it is sent to the sales department to place the orders for the new project. The
components were calculated and tabled so that it will be easier to place the orders and keep track
how many were used.

Contributions
4.0 Demo Unit
Demo unit was a major part of my internship in SCA. It was a task where we had to
replace the companys old demo unit of the fire alarm system with a more advanced and better
quality one. The company required it to be easily portable and transparent for the future clients of
the company to see how a smoke control system works. It was basically a miniature or a
prototype of a building which consist of 5 floors. The prototype consist 5 floors which had each
floor installed with various components such as smoke detector, horn strobe, speaker strobe,
telephone, break glass/manual pull station, damper and actuator.
The company already had one but it was less effective. So they gave us, the interns to
come up with a new one which is more improvised. It should be designed, built and programmed
accordingly. I personally was in charge in designing the new demo unit. After a few discussions
with the supervisors, I started designing the demo unit by using software called Autodesk
Inventor Professional 2014.
After designing the first design, a meeting was arranged by the supervisors to present my
design to the Marketing Director (Mr. Stanley) and Sales Manager (Mr. Priestly). Unfortunately,
that design of mine was rejected. They started giving new and better ideas to improve my design
according what they desired. Soon after the meeting, I started working on the new design and the
old demo unit was disassembled. The components were calculated and added as the new demo
unit has five floors compared to the old demo unit which only had three floors.
Several weeks later, my design of the demo unit was completed and soon it was
approved. I had the approval for me to start placing orders and sending the design for fabrication.
We started off by visiting a steel factory in Puchong to fabricate the metal part of the demo unit.
Later, we contacted the acrylic maker to check the pricing and did some arrangements on the
design. A week later, the metal part was ready. And the acrylic designer paid a visit to the
company to take measurements to make the acrylic according to my design. Orders were made
and we waited for the acrylic to arrive.
While waiting for the acrylic to be fabricated, me and my supervisor went to certain
places to get other components for the demo unit such as fans, cables, connectors and etc. in the
same time, we started assembling the phase one of the demo unit which is mounted on the wall.
Wiring, installation and labelling were done for the phase 1. After finishing phase 1, it was
already the final week of the industrial training, the acrylic arrived. So my supervisor and I
assembled the metal part and the acrylic parts together as per design. Unfortunately it couldnt be
completed at the final week. My supervisor decided to do the completion on a weekend as we
interns were not going to be around anymore.

Second week of January, I was invited by the project team to join them to finish up the
demo unit. There we assembled the modules, detectors and other components on the demo unit.
We did the wiring and tested the components were working as desired or not. Three quarter work
has been done and the one quarter is going to be completed by the project team themselves. Work
is still in progress. From this my contribution to the company will be the design of the New
Demo Unit which I single handedly designed.
