Let It Snow
By Hannah Morris
When the weather outside is frightful,
but the fire is so delightful,
as long as school is closed,
Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow!
This year we are expected to have a lot of snow
fall, more than average. Meteorologist Matt
Hinkins, predicted that East Tennessee, closer
to the Knoxville area, will have 14-18 inches of
snow. The average snow fall for the Knoxville
area is 6.5 inches of SNOW! This year we are
predicted to have 7.5 more inches than AVERAGE! If all predictions are right then we will be
having more than 1 foot of snow. Now that we
know a good chance of what will happen, lets
find out how we know, and what weather we
have to get before school is closed.
According to folk legend, you can predict the
weather with a persimmon seed. Heres how to
do it:

Words We Use Today and in the 80's

By Angel Miller
Remember those childhood stories that your
parents tell you? Here are four terms they
might have used in the 1980s.

NEWS/EDITORIAL P1

How well do you enjoy Cubs Q and A?

Let us know. tpjhsroar@gmail.com

Cut open a persimmon seed. (Find persimmon fruit in your supermarket. It should be locally-grown to reflect your weather.) Look at the
shape of the kernel inside. If the kernel is spoonshaped, lots of heavy, wet snow will fall. (Spoon
= shovel!) This year, the seed is spoon-shaped!!!
This is a folk tale that lots of people go by. If this
is true, lets find out just how much weather it
will take to get school closed.

The main question when deciding to close school

is, what is safest? The school system must think
about the safety of kids and their families. When
busses can't run, then school will definitely not
be open that day. Another factor in this decision
is how bad the roads are. When it is dangerous
for people to be on the roads, the school system
will be taking precaution then as well. Now, here
are some old folk tales on how to let it snow.

sleep with spoon under your pillow

put two ice cubes in the toilet
sleep with your pajamas inside out
make a shaker with old water bottle and small
house hold items then shake it to encourage
snow
These are ways to push our luck; until next time,
let it snow!

Cubs are Looking Good!

By Chase Hunt

The Cubs are off to a good start! The

boys are 5-1 so far and are looking good with
just one loss. We won our last five games, but
then lost to Chilhowee. JV is working hard;
theyre 3-3 with losses to North Middle, Chilhowee, and Sweetwater. So next time Coach
Abernathy announces a game, come out and
spport your cubs. Save some of that Christmas
money and come spend it at a home ball game.!

Cubs To The Hoop

By Kaylie West and Jocey Yates
On November 5th, Tellico Cubs and Lady Cubs
traveled to Coker Creek for our first game. Everyone played good, but we still made mistakes.
We battled hard and the boys and girls both
won. The boys and girls JV both won too. Both
teams JV and Varsity played a good game and
pulled out a great win for our school. Here is
the score for the girls varsity 36 to 20 Tellico.
Congratulations to all of the teams. Lets hope
that the games to come we will do great.

Monroe County
Shooting Team
By William Hunt

One sports team you may not have heard of, but
definitely will soon, is the Monroe County Shooting Team. I have more information on this
young, yet talented team. They practice on Monday and Tuesday from 4 pm until 6 pm.
It lasts from March through October. There is a
reasonable membership fee to join.
Shooters have to provide their own gun, a 20 or
12 gauge, and it needs to be an automatic, over
and under, or pump (no single shots). You also
have to provide your own shells, but sometimes
in tournaments if they have enough money, they
will provide the shells. They practice at the Chillhowee Rod And Gun Club in Athens. You might
wonder why they don't practice in Monroe
County since they're the Monroe County Shooting Team; well, they don't have their own skeet
field but they're trying to save and raise money
to buy land and build a skeet field.
They don't travel very much until the end of
the season. The team goes to regional tournaments in different locations, for example Sweetwater, Benton, and many other places. They go
to the state tournament in Nashville. They go to
the National tournament in Sparta, Illinois. The
cost varies for each tournament and includes a
shirt and the skeet.
These are things you might want to know about
the Monroe County Shooting Team in case you
might want to join!
Christmas Around the World:
Look for the small trees in this issue to
reveal a fact about Christmas around the
world. Many of our traditions come from other
cultures. This is just another reason that America
is considered a "cultural melting-pot!"

you go around as a character named Jesse.
Jesse can be male or female, and whatever kind

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

This book is by far one of my favorites. It

is full of action and mystery. It's about a boy
named Percy Jackson, as the title suggests.
Who never knew his father, his mother had
told him that his father died when Percy was a
young boy. After a twist and turn of events, he
finds out that he is a demigod, meaning that
he is the son of Poseidon . He gets discreetly
sent to a training ground for the children of
the deities (a very important person), so he can
learn how to utilize his powers and go for an
escapade of a lifetime. He needs to keep ongoing tension with the Olympians settled, so it
doesn't break out into a war. Also, at the same
time, keeping his mother from the reins of
Hades, the God of the underworld. Can he
save his mother? Can he save the world from a
war? This book is the first of a series of five
books. I highly suggest reading them.

A Day in Which Will Live in Infamy

By David Williams
At 7:55 a.m. December 7,1941 hundreds of
Japanese warplanes launched from aircraft carriers far out at sea and attacked the American
Pacific fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor. Hundreds
of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu
Hawaii. After this brutal attack, America decided
to declare war on Japan, and effectively entered
Word War II.
Around 2,400 sailors and marines were stationed
at Pearl Harbor. 350 Japanese aircraft attacked
the naval base in two waves. The targets were
warships and other military targets. The invasion lasted 90 minutes, but four battleships were
pummeled and 188 aircraft were damaged; even
more buildings were hit.
The fatal attack truly will always be ''A day in
which will live in infamy'' as declared by President Theodore Roosevelt in his address to the
nation shortly afterwards.

Decorating evergreen trees had always

been a part of the German winter solstice
tradition. The first Christmas trees explicitly decorated and named after the
Christian holiday, appeared in Strasbourg,
in Alsace in the beginning of the 17th century.

Poinsettia plants are named after Joel R.

Poinsett, an American minister to Mexico,
who brought the red-and-green plant from
Mexico to America in 1828.

Are these lines parallel?

The Zollner illusion is named after German astrophysicist Johann
Karl Friedrich Zollner. Although the black lines appear to not be
parallel, in reality they are.

DIY Crafts

By Kadyn Chastain

Not everyone loves winter. However if you do,

here are some DIY crafts for you. This craft is
directed more towards girls. It is from Momtastic.com and is called sparkly branches. It is great
for decorating your house with sparkle and shine.
Supplies:
Tree branch
Plasti-Kote Metallic Silver Spray Paint
Silver glitter or Pacon Spectra glitter
Color Fill Vase and Decorative Accents (for
a clear, icy look) OR Epsom Salt (for an
opaque, snowy look)
Elmers Glue
3M Spray Adhesive
Paint brush
Pruning shears
Cookie sheet

(Crafts continued)
Epsom salt also works in place of the Color Fill
accents, but your branches will have a whiter,
snowy look, rather than a sparkly, icy look.
Now for the boys. This craft is called Crepe Laser
Maze. It is very simple. This is all you need to do.
For this craft you will need streamers, tape, scissors, and a hallway.
Tape them high, tape them low and all ways in
between. You may have to do some adjusting as
you actually navigate through it. You want it to
have a level of difficultly, but you also want it to
be do-able so it is actually fun. Fast, super cheap
and easy clean up too for HOURS of fun!!! All of
my information came from Pinterest. For more
ideas go to Pinterest.com and search for Winter
DIY Boys or Winter DIY Girls.

Step 1: Find a tree branch the size you require,

then use pruning shears to cut and shape your
branches.
Step 2: Spray your branch with spray paint to
cover. Let it dry.

Step 4: Lay the cookie sheet on the ground and

Step 5: To create an icy look, spread some white
glue in a few places along the branch

Italians call Chrismas Il

meaning the birthday.

Step 6: Clear off the cookie sheet, and then sprinkle clear Color Fill decorative accents over the
glue. These little cubes will stick to your branches
easily. Collect excess accents on a cookie sheet
as you did with the glitter in the previous step to
reuse or save for later.

During the warm and sunny Australian Christmas

season, beach time and outdoor barbecues
are common. Traditional Christmas day
celebrations include family gatherings,
exchanging gifts and either a hot meal
with ham, turkey, pork or seafood or barbeques.

In the United States and England, children hang stockings on their bedpost or
near a fireplace on Christmas Eve, hoping that it will be filled with treats while
they sleep. In Scandinavia, similarminded children leave their shoes on the
hearth.
Did you know that the average
American adult spends $700$900 on Christmas gifts?
According to national surveys,
this amount is slightly lower than it was ten
years ago. Remember that great gifts don't
have to be expensive, if they come from the
heart!
