Re: Funding Request
We are writing on behalf of the American Medical Student Association and the Society
of Women Engineers to request $1750 from the College of Engineering and Applied Science to
host a South Eastern Wisconsin Girl Scout Exploring STEM event. Exploring STEM is a program
that introduces the science, technology, engineering, and mathematical fields to girls between
the ages of 10 and 15.
Attached you will find the project objective, scope, budget and timeline. We are the
event coordinators representing our respective clubs for this project and our contact
information is below.
We greatly appreciate your consideration of our proposal and look forward to your
reply. We would appreciate a decision by Friday, February 18th, 2017. If you have any questions,
please do not hesitate to contact us.

Proposal for Girl Scout participation in Exploring STEM

Background
The American Medical Student Association is a student-governed, national organization
committed to representing the concerns of physicians-in-training. AMSA members are medical students,
premedical students, interns, residents and practicing physicians committed to improving medical
training and the nations health. The Society of Women Engineers is an organization dedicated to the
advancement of women in engineering and related fields. SWE became an official organization here at
UW-Milwaukee in 1976. Both organizations frequently hold events to inspire undergraduates to
continue in their respective fields, but also plan activities to encourage the next generation to pursue
STEM related fields.

How does this event meet funding requirements?

This event meets all three requirements for funding; promote the mission of the college,
enhance education of students, and have tangible benefit to the College of Engineering. This event
encourages its participants to consider STEM fields as future options and will highlight our new
Biomedical Engineering program. This event will be held in the EMS building, showcasing many of the
amazing labs we have to offer. This event enables current students to teach applicable skills which
allows them to show why they chose to pursue STEM majors. We have also contacted the Marketing
department in hopes of partnering in this event to use as an example for CEAS to get more attention for
the department as well as our organization, and we are still waiting to hear back.

Objective
The purpose of this project is to foster and support girls interest in the STEM fields. While the
enrollment of female students is catching up to male enrollment in the fields of law and medicine,
female enrollment in engineering continues to lag significantly. Some of the factors that influence girls
enrollment decisions occur at an early age, so we propose to stage an event to provide positive and
supportive exposure as well as nurture and develop girls interest in STEM related fields. The AMSA and
SWE chapters of UWM propose to host the event Exploring STEM to help gradually increase female
enrollment. We will evaluate the success of this event based on the surveys we give the participants at
the end of the day which has worked well in the past.

Scope
We will be hosting Exploring STEM in the Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Building on
Saturday, March 25th, 2017 from 10am until 4pm. This will be the SWEs third time hosting an event of
this nature, and first time collaborating with ASMA. Last years Wow! Thats Engineering? event hosted
about 75 girls from Girl Scout troops around the area. The projected participation for this years
Exploring STEM is 80 girls, or more, from South Eastern Wisconsin. Transportation is provided on their
end. We will mainly be staffing the event with AMSA and SWE members. A few STEM professors have
agreed to show their labs and give short demonstrations, as they did last year. The planned activities will
include: an introduction and orientation, an exploration of hands-on STEM kits, and interactive
demonstrations and experiments by UWM professors in their labs. At the end of the event, the girls will
go home with completed kits, and the experience of interacting with both female and male STEM
students and staff while exploring new options. At last years event, we had very positive feedback from
nearly all of our participants and their troop leaders. This year we plan to coordinate with UWMs
Director of Marketing to showcase the event as a CEAS project to get more attention toward the
department as well as our organizations.

Budget
Overview: Total cost of Exploring STEM is $2325. Out of that, we are requesting $1750 from the
College of Engineering and Applied Science for STEM kits, food, and T-shirts. We are also relying on
volunteers from our organizations, other student organizations and professors to provide
demonstrations. Both organizations will organize and host the event, will provide the STEM kits, posters,
member volunteers, and also information about STEM fields and the UWM-CEAS.
Itemized budget:

$700 Food
$850 for T-shirts
$775 for STEM kits

Timeline
We propose to host Exploring STEM on Saturday, March 25th, 2017. A decision is needed by
Friday, February 18th, 2017 so that we may finalize reservations, order T-shirts, and schedule volunteers.
Thank you again for your consideration.
