Confident Communities, Brighter Futures: A framework for

developing wellbeing

This best practice guidance was published in March 2010. It

sets out the argument and evidence base for prioritising
well-being, and provides a systematic approach to improving
mental well-being with selected evidence-based approaches
and interventions that have been shown to be effective
across the life course, and across key public health
domains.

Its main aim is to inspire us all to work together for a shared

aspiration of improving everybody’s mental wellbeing.

LINking Up, Moving Forward!
The Carter Room Fry Club & Conference Centre Somerdale Keynsham Bristol BS31 2AU
Last year, we carried out our ‘Have Your Say’ survey, in which we asked you to tell us what was most important to
you about the Health and Social Care services in B&NES. To take forward the findings of this survey, we are now
inviting LINk Members and Participants to come and tell us their views about the best ways of improving services in
three priority areas that were highlighted by the people of B&NES in the survey:
 Care of the elderly
Support for people with disabilities
Awareness of/access to services We will have a number of expert speakers to tell you about how these services
are currently provided, and about plans for the future.
We need your input to this - we want to tell the NHS and Council professionals who plan the services what it is that
the people of B&NES want from them. We can only do this if you tell us your views. There will be food, drinks, etc
for everyone who comes. So, please, help us to improve services in B&NES! Let us know if you can come, and
make a note in your diary. There will be a limited number of places, so it has to be strictly first come, first served!

Mindfulness Course
Sharpham House, Ashprington, Totnes, TQ9 7UT
Mindfulness is
 An effective way to manage stress in daily life
 A way to recognize unwanted patterns as they occur
 A way to make positive choices rather than habitual responses.
It is the art of observing the mind, the body and the breath with acceptance and without judgement. Using a range
of techniques, it can be learned and used by anyone. It is recommended by the NHS to develop positive health and
wellbeing and is increasingly used in professional development and education. Sharpham Mindfulness courses
include
 Mindfulness in Daily Life;
 Professional Development Programmes;
 Practice Days; and
 Outreach Work. Sharpham House, overlooking the river Dart has spacious rooms and extensive gardens.
Its warm friendly atmosphere provides an ideal setting in which to learn these skills. This weekend retreat will offer
an opportunity to explore together some mindfulness meditation practices as taught in Eastern Buddhist traditions
and in contemporary mindfulness-based approaches to therapy and healthcare. The weekend will be a mixture of
extended periods of practice, conversation and silence. It is open to anyone with an interest in how mindfulness
can support and enhance their health and well-being. It may be of interest to people who have some experience of
mindfulness, whether in a spiritual tradition or a Western therapeutic context, and would like to take their practice
deeper. Newcomers are also welcome as full instructions will be given.

Sustainable Social Care
Hallam Conference Centre, London W1W 6JJ
This conference aims to share the latest findings and both strategic and practical recommendations from the
innovative Sustainable Social Care Programme. The Programme is exploring how sustainable development
approaches can help realise the vision of Putting People First and support the improvement and efficiency agenda
including Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA). Why Sustainable Social Care? Social Care Services and their
users are among the most affected by the major social, economic and environmental challenges of our time. That
is, an ageing and dynamically diverse population, climate change, energy insecurity, financial instablity and
increases in health inequalities and issues such as obesity, mental health, alcohol misuse, chronic illnesses and
complex conditions such as dementia. The premise of the Sustainability Social Care Programme is that successful
approaches to these challenges will recognise and address social, economic and environmental factors
simultaneously and will take the longer term view. The conference will address critical strategic and operational
issues around sustainability and social care. * Find out what conditions need to be in place to make social care
sustainable * Examine good practice examples which identify what works in practice, barriers faced and lessons for
the future * Be the first to hear and discuss the recommendations of our Local Authority Learning Network bringing
together senior figures from across local government, housing, health, climate and environment * Join a growing
network of thinkers and doers who are driving the changes necessary to make care services sustainable. For

Money Management for Vulnerable People
Inmarsat, 99 City Road, London EC1
Poor money management leads many vulnerable people into significant difficulties with debt, often resulting in the
loss of a tenancy - making even tougher a life already beset with challenges. More knowledge about financial
matters and a better attitude to money can help vulnerable people create security, increased independence and
participation in the community, and the ability to make choices and plan for the future – making the most of life’s
opportunities more than just ‘getting by’. For further information or to book a place please go to:

Ethnicity and Use of the Mental Health Act
Friends House 173-177 Euston Road London NW1 2BJ
This one day event will focus on the exploration of the following questions:
 How should we interpret these findings?
 Is racism the main issue behind the fact that some BME groups are over represented in terms of admission and
detention rates and also the increased use of certain diagnostic categories such as schizophrenia?
 Should we be focusing on understanding and learning why certain BME groups are not over represented?
 Have the changes to the Mental Health Act been detrimental or helpful? To whom?
 What alternatives are available and seen as useful to people from BME communities who have been, or who are
currently at risk of being detained?
 Where do the solutions lie? Should we be focusing on tackling racism in society? Should we be making stronger
efforts to address institutional racism within mental health services?
This conference will be relevant to anyone in the field of mental health and social care. Also, officers from local
authorities and NHS trusts across the UK, mental health professionals and practitioners, including Approved Mental
Health Professionals, charities, third sector, educational establishments, the legal profession, academics and policy
makers. Limited free places are available to service users and carers. The full conference brochure is available at:

Negotiation Skills - for Commissioners, Providers and Managers (2 Day Event)
Central London
This is a two day course in Solutions Focused Negotiation on 30th June and 20th July in Central London. There is
a tremendous challenge in providing excellent public services under intense financial pressure. At the same time
there is a need to make the emerging markets a reality in the public-service sector. It is important, not only to
provide services today, but also to build capacity for the future. In order to rise to these challenges, excellent
negotiation skills are required; skills in building agreements which truly address the needs of commissioning
bodies, providers and all other stakeholders. Good negotiators can build agreements which deliver the needed
results, while also building good relations for the future. Solutions Focused negotiation is all about creating
agreements both sides want to keep, while building good relations, and not wasting any time in the process. It is
built around "MAGIC" - a structure that makes negotiation quick, easy and enjoyable to learn. It is a way of going
about seeking solutions which are better for both sides. People often report dramatic increases in their negotiation
results and confidence after training in the MAGIC negotiation model. For further information or to book a place,
