EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS REPORT TO THE BOARD

CALENDAR OF EVENTS
COFFEE & CONVERSATION
Coffee & Conversation, a daytime program oriented toward customers without homes, will
expand to several other branches in 2016. Coffee & Conversation consists of regular, informal
conversations focused on relevant and engaging topics discussed over a cup of coffee in the
uniquely vibrant and important space that is the library. The program will encourage the
coming together of the unhoused and housed in an exchange of ideas with the goal of
promoting the public library as a place of social inclusion, focusing on what people have in
common regardless of differences in housing status. The program, originally piloted at the MLK
Library, will expand to the Shaw, Mt. Pleasant, Benning, Southeast, Northwest One, and Tenley
libraries.

PALISADES
The Palisades Library Design/Build team is expected to begin design. Community engagement
will continue throughout design and construction process.
JANUARY 25, 2016

CHEVY CHASE LIBRARY REOPENS


After a 12-week closure, the Chevy Chase Library will reopen to the public. The $650,000
makeover includes upgrades such as new flooring, paint, and furniture including tables, chairs
and lounge seating, designated stroller parking and improvements to staff areas.

TAX ASSISTANCE AT DC PUBLIC LIBRARY


Beginning February 1, Community Tax Aid, Inc. (CTA) and AARP will provide free, quality tax
assistance to low income individuals and families in the D.C. area. Assistance includes resolving
outstanding issues, preparing amended returns, and preparing returns for prior years. Some of
the libraries participating include: Anacostia, Capitol View, Lamond Riggs, Mt. Pleasant,
Petworth, Southwest and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.

CHILDREN'S AUTHOR ANDREA PINKNEY AT THE DC PUBLIC


LIBRARY
In partnership with Howard University's Center for African Studies and Read Africa, DCPL is
hosting New York Times bestselling children's author Andrea Pinkney. Pinkney will discuss her
2015 Children's Africana Book Award-winning novel The Red Pencil, an inspiring story written in
prose poems about a young girl coming of age in wartime Darfur, Sudan. School groups will be
attending and a representative from each school will read his or her own poetry, written in
response to a poem in The Red Pencil.

MEMORY LAB LAUNCH


The Labs at DCPL is launching the Memory Lab, a DIY personal archiving space in the Digital
Commons where patrons can digitize home movies, scan photographs and slides, and learn
how to take care of family heirlooms. For the launch, there will be tours of the lab every 30
minutes between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, beginning outside of the Digital Commons.

SCREENING OF THE FILM "THROUGH A LENS DARKLY"


Following the launch of the Memory Lab, DCPL wil host Director Thomas Allen Harris for a
screening of his documentary Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence
of a People in the Great Hall. Following the screening, Harris will speak about the importance of
personal archiving and how Black family archives shed light on people, places, events, and
stories that have rarely been told outside of the immediate circle of families and scholars.

DCPL will testify before the City Councils Committee on Education about FY15
accomplishments.

CLEVELAND PARK COMMUNITY MEETING


DCPL and design/build team Gilbane/Perkins Eastman will join the Cleveland Park community to
discuss the progress of the new Cleveland Park Library.

MOREHOUSE GLEE CLUB CONCERT


The Morehouse College Glee club will hold its annual performance at the Martin Luther King, Jr.
Memorial Library. Established in 1911, the distinguished ensemble has a long tradition of public
appearances. In addition to its concerts at the MLK Library dating back to 1975, the Glee Club
along with its Quartet has provided stellar performances throughout the United States and
abroad. Some memorable performances include Dr. Kings funeral, Super Bowl XXVIII, the 1996
Olympic Games and several presidential performances.

STORY TIME GALA RECEPTION


Join the DC Public Library Foundation as leading chefs, bartenders, artists, and performers
reinterpret classic stories in new ways. This event will celebrate and support the critical
children's programs at DCPL. Corporate sponsorships, host and individual tickets are available
